Stage 3: Learning Experience
Motivational Hook (process for grabbing and focusing students
attention) Time (mins): 10 Minutes
Read the final chapter of the book to the class.
Ask them how they feel about the novel and if the ending does a good
job at wrapping up the stories.
Open (process for introducing/framing lesson and agenda) Time
(mins):20 Min
Introduce the Roy Thomas Circle of life.
Handout the circle of life and ask the students to choose either
Rowdy or Arnold from the novel and fill in the different parts of their
life stories.
Where is the character from? (Community, Community, Culture,
Language, Land)
Where has the character been?
Where is the character now?
Where is the character going?
Body (main instructional and learning processes to build
understanding, skills, attitudes) Time (mins): 30 Minutes
After they have filled out the worksheet reflect on the information
and write a letter to the other character.
Things to think about; What is the other character feeling after the
last chapter?
What do you want the other character to know?
Explain how youre feeling after Arnold switching schools/ Explain
how Arnold has developed as a character
Students are welcome to draw a picture about how they are feeling to
add to the letter.
Closure (processes for recapping, looking ahead) Time (mins): 15

Discuss was students thought about the book.
Stage 4: Reflection and Extension
Student Reflection of Learning (i.e., critical thinking questions to
extend the learning)
Have students predict about what might have happened to Rowdy an
Arnold. Do you think they stayed friends?

Character Analysis
Pick a character from the novel (Arnold or Rowdy) and with the information
discussed in class and read in the novel fill out their circle of life.
Please use this sheet as a rough copy, the polished copy should be done on a
separate piece of paper.
Reflect on the information youve outlined in the circle of life.
Think about how Arnold and Rowdy have grown throughout the book.
Write a letter explaining how they may be feeling at this point of their
lives.
Talk about your dreams and your hopes for your future friendship.
