Grade Seven: Social Studies Lesson Plan #7

Activity: Workbook / Exit Slip

Goals/Key questions
To what extent was agricultural activity a key factor in the population growth of
Western Canada?
How did the National Policy strengthen the Canadian economy?
This lesson will meet the overall goal by: recapping the National Policy
and its first and second pillars transportation and immigration, the necessity
to build the CPR and how it affected the growth of the country and who built
it. Then transitioning into what other impacts immigrants had on the
development of Canada and how they contributed, ie. Immigrant farmers
that populated the West. These immigrant farmers were used to boost
Macdonalds third pillar of the National Policy, economy. They harvested
resources and goods that now did not need to be purchased from the U.S.
and allowed Macdonald to implement a protective tariff on products crossing
the border making them more expensive than buying in Canada.

Objective (connected to PofS): To understand how much of our country was

built by poorly treated immigrants. The development of Canada
and MacDonalds National Policy revolved around the new
immigrant population and their labour to boost the Canadian
economy.

implications of a protective
tarif; makes goods more
expensive so people buy local,
thus creating more local jobs,

more expensive so perhaps
backlash from local populations,
but the money earned from
tariffs provided programs that
people wanted.
