Summary

What makes effective teacher effective? In the beginning of the article, Stronge and Xu

indicate that people should care about what makes a teacher effective, because teaching is one

of the biggest professions (Page 6, paragraph 1) around the world. Every year, people spend a

lot of money on education. In fact, the basic but important requirement for an effective teacher is

to increase student achievement (Page 7, paragraph 2). Therefore, there are three essential

factors discussed in the article: instructional planning; instructional delivery; and assessment

of/for learning.

First of all, effective teacher has different strategy to make instructional planning. Unlike

the bottom teacher planning lesson alone, the top teacher would like to collaborate with one

or more teachers. Instead of teaching that written on the textbook only, effective use multisource

to plan a lesson. Furthermore, some novice teachers may know how to plan a lesson, but they

hardly do it on the real action. However, expert teachers know how to help students to meet the

knowledge. They predict the problems that students will be confused with, so that they will

prepare solution for students.

On the other hand, instructional delivery is also important. In the article, Stronge and Xu

summarized Impact of teacher practices on student achievement. The most effective practice is

providing formative evaluation. And the followed is teacher clarity, and then feedback.

However, if student control over learning, it would be the worst practice of teacher in the class.

Last but not the least, an effective teacher knows how to assess students achievement.

Through using frequent assessment, providing constructive feedback, Informing

instructional decision making, using data-based decisions for instruction modification,

leading to differentiated assignments, and assessing instructional effectiveness, effective

teacher can help student to achieve to higher level.

All in all, instructional planning, instructional delivery, and assessment of/for learning are

the most important processes to help student achievement, and make effective teacher effective.

Reflection

This article is very important and useful to those novice teachers, such like me. For many

novice teachers, they do not know how to teach. It does not mean they are lack of knowledge.

But the common situation is that they prepare so hard for the class, and forget everything in the

class, because there are always some accident things happen in the class. Once one of the

teaching step missed, novice teachers do not know how to continue the class at all.

Unfortunately, students would not be kind to novice teachers, so that the class immediately ran to

chaos. Therefore, teacher should practice the three processes frequently: instructional planning,

instructional delivery, and assessment of/for learning.

When a teacher walks into the classroom, he/she should have at least two plans in his/her

mind. In other words, teacher have to control the class. Sometimes, teaching seems like a battle.

Students always try to control over the class. An effective teacher knows how to prevent these

things happen in the beginning. And when things happened, the effective teacher has plans to

save the class. It is hard to let every student to love everything taught in class. But effective

teachers can get students attention through well-prepared and multisourced lesson.

Moreover, another common problem that novice teacher met is they could not delivery

what they have planned well. In fact, many teachers turn the teaching to be like a talk show. At

the end of class, they suddenly realize that they have not finished their lesson yet. Actually,

students learn less from the single type of teaching class. Teacher should use different strategies

to motivate student learning. On the other hand, teacher need to find some appropriate ways to

assess student achievement (quiz is not the only choice).

In short, the way good for student, the way we pursuit.
