Happy. N.p., 1 Jan. 2011. Web. 9 Feb. 2017.

Summary
The movie Happy shows different people around the world that are definitely happy but for all
different reasons. The main ones stood out to me. The first one was an older man that was purely
happy from from physical activity, this would be an intrinsic goal. The was also a ma that work at a
home for the dying, even though he had plenty of money and could have had a different life but he
found lost of happiness in helping others. In a small island in Japan there was a group of the highest
number of people over 100 years old and coincidently the island had lots of social connection with
each other and therefore they all seem very happy. The truth of happiness is found in Intrinsic goals,
flow and living selflessly.

Assessment
I think this source is a really great source that has won some sundce awards and was
nominated for an oscar. It also shows how many different people have their form of happiness
across the world.

Reflection
I think my favorite part of this document was about the surfer that was happy from physical
activity which is also how I find a lot of happiness.

Cool Facts

Summary
Viktor Frankl was a Jewish psychiatrist that was in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942. He
argues that meaning can bring fulfillment that then can bring joy. He also talks about the fact that
The single-minded pursuit of happiness is ironically leaving people less happy. They also say that
people who are takers are happy and people who are givers are meaningful.

Assessment
This source was great for some strong quotes but I think it started of topic sometimes and
talked too much about Viktor Frankl life although that was interesting it was besides that idea.

Reflection
This article has me look at happiness in a different way and makes me understand that you
could chase it all of your life and still not find the truth. Also I now understand that meaning and
happiness are not directioning affecting each other.

Evidence
Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert, research shows that parents are less happy
interacting with their children than they are exercising, eating, and watching television
The psychologists found, is associated with being a taker while leading a meaningful life
corresponds with being a giver.
But happiness cannot be pursued; it must ensue. One must have a reason to 'be
happy.'"
"It is the very pursuit of happiness," Frankl knew, "that thwarts happiness."

Summary
Martin Seligman a psychologist talks about how psychology is Good Not good Not
good enough. He also talked about how psychology is more concerned with weakness rather
than creating strength and strength. The he gets into the idea of how we can positively affect
people with psychology, We can make miserable people less miserable. He then also
mentioned the three different lives and their differences, the pleasant life, life of edgemont, the
meaningful life.

Assessment
This was a good Ted Talk but I was much more interested in the city he gave us during
the talk. authentichappiness.org I definitely think it is important to hear from people that work
with people's emotions for a living.

Reflection
I was most interested in the 3 happy life he talked about. The pleasant life, life of
edgemont, the meaningful life.

Summary
Barry Schwartz talks about the amount of choice we have in our lives with explaining just
how many options of salad dressing his grocery story has. He then says that we love this option
and thrive on it but that it is actually rather hard for us to understand. With all of the option we
have it produces paralysis and it is hard to make a choice. He made interesting points that the
more option we had the less likely we were to make and option, an employee at Vanguard said
That for every 10 options of mutual fund a business offers, the amount of peoples participation
goes down 2%.

Assessment
I liked this idea of too much option and i think it was a good source to use later of in a
video as evidence.

Reflection
As I said before I think this guy has a totally valid idea about the amount of choice we
have in little choices.

Evidence

business offers, the amount of peoples participation goes down 2%.

Summary
This article talked about the different things Denmark valued and how much. Things like
work life balance, life satisfaction, health, environment community and education are just a few.
I learned about that Denmark is a pretty happy place. With good environmental aspects, 35%
of Copenhagen residents cycle to work or education regularly. Around 55 % of all school
children in Copenhagen cycle to school on a regular basis. Also they have pretty good health
72% of people in Denmark reported to be in good health, which is above average.
Assessment
I think this source was interesting but did not connect happiness to these topics as much
as it could. With that said if this was the kind of thing you were looking for it would be an
excellent source.

Reflection
I probably will not use much evidence from this in my video later on in the project
because it doesn't connect to what I am interested in.

Evidence
The City of Copenhagen has, as do many other Danish towns, a long tradition
for cycling policies, investing in dedicated cycle lanes and bridges.
80% of adults aged 25-64 have completed upper secondary education, higher
than the OECD average.
96% of people believe that they know someone they could rely on in a time of

Summary
Matt Killingsworth talks about how happiness is our final goal in life The end of which all
other things aim. THen he talks about the booming industry of happiness research and his
happiness tracker app. With his app he records the data from over 15,000 as of 2011. With that
app they record people when their mind is drifting and he found that peoples minds who drift are
less happy. If mind wandering were a slot machine it is like having the option to lose $50, $20
and $1 you would never want to play. With the app he discovered peoples minds are
wandering 47% of the time.

Assessment
This was a highly interesting source that presented an app that I am going to test for 30
days. If I was not more interested in physical activity and its connection to happiness then I
would like to look more into this topic.

Reflection
I probably will not use this video as a source later on but I might use my findings of the
app to incorporate in.

Evidence
In the last few years there has been an explosion in happiness research
Yes it is better to make more money than less but happiness tends to change
very little.
If mind wandering were a slot machine it is like having the option to lose $50,
$20 and $1 you would never want to play.
Mind wandering is likely a cuses, and not merely a consequence of
unhappiness.

Summary
The article says that many people turn to drugs and alcohol when they are unhappy but
there might be a better option. There is another strategy for reducing stress and improving
mood that not only seems to make people happier, but also yields positive long-term effects
more conducive to long-term happiness: exercise. The article the talks about the multiply
positive side effects of exercise that include things like, increased energy, less anxious, higher
production of endorphins and antibodies.

Assessment
This article seemed very reliable because of all, of the sources that they used that all
pointed at the same idea.

Reflection
This article was something that I was highly interested in and is the final topic I want to
put the majority of my research into.

Evidence
There is another strategy for reducing stress and improving mood that not only seems
to make people happier, but also yields positive long-term effects more conducive to long-term
happiness: exercise.
When we walk, run, bike or engage in some other form of physical exercise, we
generally seem to feel happier and less anxious.
In addition to increased energy, physically active people may feel a sense of
accomplishment in meeting personal fitness goals.
Exercise is no slouch, either -- it has been shown to increase antibody production by as
much as 300 percent [source:Nieman, David C. Nutrition and Exercise Immunology. CRC Press, 2000. ISBN

Summary
Physical activity has health benefits but it also can have benefits on our mood. This
article talks about how people can help get over depression by exercise. In 2014 people with
Major Depressive Disorder were asked to exercise just 3 times a week, this helped patients
moods, with that said a regular amount of exercise can even help patients overcome
depression. People without depression can also be positively affected by exercise. T he Journal
of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness wrote The effects of exercise on mood changes: the
moderating effect of depressed mood. Exercise can distract you from your daily problems to
keep you clear minded for later on, Exercise can also have long term health effects on the body
and the mind.

Assessment
This sources has some really good information that they have found from many different
publications.

Reflection
I will most definitely be using some of the sources in my final product. I find the
connection between physical activity and happiness.
