IT Essentials: PC Hardware and Software v6.0 Chapter 1 - 12 Syllabus

Course Overview and Description


The Cisco IT Essentials (ITE) curriculum offers a hands-on, career-oriented learning experience with an
emphasis on practical activities to help students develop fundamental computer and career skills. IT
Essentials helps students prepare for entry-level IT career opportunities and the CompTIA A+ certification,
which helps students differentiate themselves in the marketplace and advance their careers.

Industries and Pathways: Some examples of working environments and jobs that may be available to students
after completing this course are:
A corporate or mobile environment with a high level of face-to-face client interaction. Job titles
include enterprise technician, IT administrator, field service technician, and PC technician.
A remote-based work environment that emphasizes client interaction, client training, operating
systems, and connectivity issues. Job titles include remote support technician, help desk technician
or IT specialist.
Settings with limited customer interaction where hardware-related activities are emphasized. Job
titles include depot technician and bench technician.

Industry Recognized Certification


The IT Essentials curriculum prepares students for the CompTia A+ Certification test. You will be
able to apply for a voucher to take the A+ for $80. If you pass with a B or better you will receive a
letter of recommendation from Cisco President.

Curriculum and Internet Use


This is a college level class with a college level curriculum. You have to be able to read the
curriculum on-line to do well in this class. If you are unable to do this, this may not be the class for
you.
Students can access the curriculum on the Internet at https://www.netacad.com/
Each student will need a user name and password to login into the Cisco site. Students will take on-
line assessments after each chapter and at the end of the course.

i. The skills-based assessment has nine parts that include building a computer,
installing an operating system, configuring the network card, installation of a printer,
sharing files and a printer, and preventive maintenance tasks.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:
In the business world, you are expected to be at work when scheduled and on time. In preparation
for the world of work, attendance in this class will follow the same guidelines. Students that have
good attendance in class usually have better grades, have a better understanding of how powerful
business is and the role it has on everyday situations.

LATE WORK PROCEDURES: In some cases, in class work time will be given to complete assignments. Be
wise with your time! You are expected to turn in all assignments when they are due.
It is the students responsibility to meet assignment deadlines. Students will have two days to
make up assignments if the absence is excused and three days to make up a test. Unexcused
absences will result in a ZERO for that days work. Late work will be penalized one full grade (B+ to
C+) for being one day late. ZERO credit will be earned thereafter, unless arrangements have been
made with the instructor. It is the students responsibility to obtain missing assignments from the
instructor on their return to class or look on schoolloop.
