DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TAKING PLACE ON

MOUNT PLEASANT — In an effort to raise
awareness about domestic violence as well as
honor one of its victims, the fourth Annual Ride
Against Domestic Violence will take place at the
end of the month.
“(Domestic violence) is prevalent in our society,”
said organizer Shel Fox. “One in four women
are victims of domestic violence.”
Motorcyclists can begin registering at 10 a.m.,
with the run starting at 11 a.m. on July 31 in
the Morning Sun parking lot, located at 711 W.
Pickard St. in Mount Pleasant. Although the
route is yet to be finalized, riders will cruise
through Mount Pleasant then up U.S 127 to
Clare and will end at the Evart Loyal Order of
the Moose Lodge No. 2452, located just east of
Evart on U.S. 10. The ride should end around
noon.
“When those guys start their motorcycles and
head out of the parking lot, it brings tears to our
eyes every time,” said organizer Beth Mills. “We
get more riders every year.”
The ride is held in honor of Mary Babb, an Evart
native who was murdered by her husband on
Jan. 9, 2007, in the parking lot of the Morning
Sun, where she was employed. Thomas Babb
was sentenced to 50 to 70 years in prison for
the murder of his wife.
“We loved her like she was our own,” Mills said.
“We thought starting (in Mount Pleasant) and
going ‘home’ was appropriate.”
Originally, the motorcycle run was designed to
raise money for the education of Sam Babb, 7,
Mary’s son. However, Sam Babb’s family said
that over the past three years, the motorcycle
run has raised more than enough money for his
future and insisted the money go to help area
women’s shelters and organizations.
“Were all about bringing awareness to
domestic violence,” Mills said. “It’s one of those
things that have been swept under the rug for
too many years.”
Last year, the ride brought out nearly 90
motorcyclists, who raised more than $3,000,
which was donated to Sam Babb. This year,
organizers hope to bring in more riders and
raise more money, which will be donated to
women’s shelters and organizations in Mecosta,
Isabella and Newaygo.
“This year we’re looking to triple the amount of
people,” said social quarters and bar manager
of the Moose Lodge Ed Siniarski. “It’s really
important to us up here. People come and help
us out (every year).”
Fox said that over the past three years, the
benefit ride has raised more than $10,000.
“It’s a testament to the people who come out
and ride an have dinner,” he said. “It’s just an
amazing amount of support.”
In addition, riders will be escorted by the
Isabella County Sheriff’s Department during the
entire ride.
“We are so appreciative of that,” Fox said. “It’s
just so outstanding.”
After the ride, there will be a pulled pork
and chicken meal with all the trimmings at
the Moose Lodge. There also will be door
prizes and a silent auction featuring a hand-
made graphite fishing rod with a Mary’s
Dream inscription on it, two sets of Goldwing
motorcycle pipes from TorqMaster of California,
an autographed football signed by the Detroit
Lions and autographed photographs of Detroit
Red Wings. Anyone who does not wish to join
the ride is encouraged to come to the Moose
Lodge and enjoy the dinner.
“Just come down to the Evart Moose Lodge and

break bread with us,” Siniarski said. “We want
to get the word out (about domestic violence).”
Registration fee for riders is $25 per bike
and can be pre-registered by sending a
check to Mary’s Dream C/O Beth Mills, 3434
North Sherman Road, Weidman, MI, 48893.
Payments also can be made the day of the
ride. Dinner costs $8 a person. Organizers
are asking for attendees to pre-purchase
dinner tickets for a head count. All proceeds
will be donated to area women’s shelters and
organizations.

a non-profit domestic violence organization, and
The Grey Dragons Motorcycle Organization,

CAMP 9-1-1 COMING IN JULY
BIG RAPIDS — For seniors who want to be
prepared for worst case scenarios, there is a
day-camp available in July to train them for bad
situations.
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program is
pleased to introduce Camp 9-1-1 (Safe Senior
Day) in Mecosta County. The camp will go
start at 9 a.m. on July 21 at the Big Rapids
Department of Public Safety, located at 435 N
Michigan Ave in Big Rapids.
Camp 9-1-1 is a a one-day, hands–on learning
and safety experience for older citizens free
of charge. Adapted from a similar program
for youth, Camp 9-1-1 for senior citizens will
provide seniors with readiness training for a
variety of incidents and emergencies.
The camp is a collaborative effort among
local law enforcement, fire departments,
emergency medical services, the American
Red Cross, emergency management, senior
service providers, senior citizens who work
to implement effective crime prevention and
education programs for older community
members.
The workshops at the camp will include mock
accident scenario, hazmat demo, ID theft/
scams/senior protection, first aid for shock
treatment, a blood pressure clinic, crime scene
processing and Fire Safety in the homes.
In addition, to the scheduled workshops,
emergency vehicles and simulators will be on
site for seniors to tour. It is recommended that
participants wear comfortable clothing and
shoes.

OVERCOME YOUR EXERCISE BARRIERS

Americans dust off their jump ropes, soccer

afternoon and after dinner.
Try performing active chores. Examples include
gardening, washing cars, mowing grass and
vacuuming. You can also get your family
involved by taking family walks around your
neighborhood and visiting community parks and
recreation centers on weekends.
“I am too tired.” At the end of a long day, doing
anything but vegging in front of the television
might seem downright Herculean. But here’s
a secret: exercise gives you more energy.
Going for a jog or brisk walk might help you
feel less tired. Exercise also reduces stress,
so a gentle walk can help you unwind after
work. Finally, make exercise fun! If jogging on a
treadmill sounds like torture, turn on your radio
or portable music device and dance to your
favorite song.
“I don’t like physical activity.” How many times
have you said that you just don’t like exercise?
To bring more joy to physical activity, ask a
friend to be your exercise buddy -- you can
motivate each other and socialize at the same
time. Also, choose an activity that you like, such
as walking. You are more likely to stick with it.

NEW TAX PERKS COULD HELP
BUSINESSES SAVE THOUSANDS
(NewsUSA) - New tax laws could save
businesses thousands on their 2010 taxes. The
tax breaks are meant to encourage businesses
to add employees, purchase equipment and
provide employee healthcare.
The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment
(HIRE) Act included a payroll tax exemption for
hiring and keeping new workers. Under the new
law, businesses can exempt the 6.2 percent
Social Security payroll tax for wages paid
between March 18, 2010 and December 31,
2010, for each new employee meeting all the
following criteria:
* Hired after February 3, 2010, and before
January 1, 2011
* Either unemployed during the 60 days before
being hired or worked less than 40 hours in total
during that 60-day period
* Not a family member or other relative
The exemption does not apply to wages
paid to an employee hired to replace an
existing worker, unless the existing worker left
voluntarily or was terminated for cause.
Employers are required to keep either Form
W-11 or an affidavit signed by the employee
(as proof they meet the criteria) in their records.
The exemption is claimed on quarterly Form
941.
Businesses retaining the employees for
52 consecutive weeks without significantly
decreasing wages in the second half of the year
can claim a new hire retention credit of up to
$1,000 per worker on 2011 returns.
The HIRE Act also extended the Section
179 first-year expensing cap on depreciable
business property for 2010. The limit remains
at $250,000 instead of decreasing to $125,000.
The $800,000 cost-of-equipment limit was also
extended for 2010.
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care
Act, signed into law on March 23, 2010, allows
businesses and tax-exempt organizations to
earn a tax credit for providing or maintaining
employee health insurance.
Jessi Dolmage, spokeswoman for 2nd Story
Software, makers of TaxACT, explained that
businesses with 10 or fewer full-time equivalent
employees with an average annual salary of
$25,000 or less can earn the maximum credit of
35 percent, while tax-exempt organizations can
receive 25 percent. Employers must pay at least
half the cost of single coverage for employees.
The credit decreases as the number of
qualifying employees and average salary
increase, phasing out at 25 full-time equivalent
employees with an average salary of $50,000 or
more. Family members do not qualify.
In 2014, the maximum credit amount will
increase to 50 percent of the premiums paid
for businesses and 35 percent for tax-exempt
organizations.
Businesses can claim the credit under the
general business credit, and the IRS will send
instructions to tax-exempt organizations.

instructions.
T - Take action. Inform your doctor of your
lifestyle and habits, as well as any concerns
and preferences, so a treatment plan can be
customized to your specific needs.

Fostering open communication with one’s
doctor is particularly important for patients with
hard-to-diagnose diseases like the autoimmune
disorder rheumatoid arthritis (RA), as symptoms
can be attributed to other medical conditions.
Furthermore, there is no single diagnostic test
for RA.
There are programs that help patients and
doctors work together to manage health
conditions by communicating openly. The
Arthritis Foundation’s Let’s Talk RA program,
sponsored by Bristol-Myers Squibb, offers
national meetings, educational podcasts and
a communication kit that includes step-by-
step discussion tips, as well as a symptom
tracker that RA patients can use with their
rheumatologists -; all at no cost.

CLEARLY
(NewsUSA) - There’s nothing quite like
seeing the world through a baby’s eyes, when
everything from patterned carpet to the family
cat becomes new and wondrous. And there’s a
reason for all that fascination. Early in life, the
brain and its visual pathways mature rapidly,
developing the child’s ability to process visual
feedback.
Those born with eye problems need quick
intervention if they are ever to experience normal
vision. For example, doctors often recommend
that babies born with pediatric cataracts, or
opaque areas on the eye lens, receive corrective
surgery before they are six weeks old.
Pediatric cataracts are rare in developed
nations, affecting one to four children in every
100,000 births. Most babies born with cataracts
end up with normal vision, thanks to a surgery
that removes the affected lens.
But children in developing nations may be 10
times as likely to be born with cataracts, and
most don’t have easy access to surgeons. Left
untreated, cataracts lead to blindness, which
impacts future educational opportunities and
the ability to earn income. One study found
that, over 10 years, the global economic loss
stemming from pediatric cataracts is somewhere
between $1 billion and $6 billion.
Luckily, some charitable organizations are
working to help children escape lifelong
impairment. For example, Lions Clubs
International Foundation partnered with the
Bausch + Lomb Early Vision Institute to create
a new program, the Pediatric Cataract Initiative.
The Pediatric Cataract Initiative will identify,
fund and promote methods that will help treat
pediatric cataracts in undeveloped areas.
Most cataracts are preventable or treatable.
When successfully treated with surgery and
proper follow-up care, most children with
pediatric cataracts will need little, if any, visual
correction as adults.
“Too many newborns afflicted with pediatric
cataract have a lifetime of vision loss and
blindness ahead of them -- an untenable
prospect in today’s world,” said Paul Sartori,
corporate vice president, Bausch + Lomb. “With
more funding and attention placed on research,
prevention and treatment, we’ll be making an
impact on the lives of children worldwide.”

PROTECT YOURSELF: PLAN IN CASE OF
DISABILITY
(NewsUSA) - Monica, a 37-year-old professional
and mother, shattered her elbow when she
slipped on her porch. In most cases, the story
would have ended there, but Monica wasn’t that
lucky. After her elbow surgery, Monica developed
a condition called osteonecrosis, which caused
her bones to crumble.
Once a successful worker in the financial sector,
Monica became confined to a wheelchair and
required a hired caretaker to bathe, eat and
dress. Monica was awarded Social Security
Disability Benefits (SSDI), but it took two-and-a-
half years to start seeing payments -- years in
which Monica couldn’t work and couldn’t afford
rent. Monica used up her retirement savings to
pay for her care. By the time she received SSDI,
it was too late to save her finances.
Unfortunately, Monica is not alone in neglecting
to plan for disability. According to a 2009
Harvard study, over half of all personal
bankruptcies are caused by illness or injury.
Yet, many people fail to consider that disability
can happen to them. According to the Council
for Disability Awareness (CDA), 60 percent
of people feel that their chances of becoming
disabled are 2 percent or less during their
working years. The real number, according to the
Social Security Administration, is 30 percent.
But you can take steps to protect yourself.
First, visit www.whatsmypdq.com to learn your
Personal Disability Quotient (PDQ), or your
chance of an injury or illness that will keep you
out of the workplace for an extended amount of
time.
Then, evaluate your lifestyle and see if there
are any changes you can make to reduce your
chances of disability. The CDA recommends
cultivating healthy behaviors, such as eating
well and exercising to maintain a healthy weight.
Regular check-ups and cancer screenings can
catch problems before they lead to disability.
Simply staying aware and using activity-
appropriate safety equipment, like seat belts,
safety goggles and helmets, can help you avoid
disabling injuries.
“Through planning and prevention, people can
minimize their chances of becoming disabled
-- or at least minimize the financial impact a
disability can have on their income and lifestyle,”
said Barry Lundquist, president of the CDA. “For
most people, their income is by far their most
valuable asset, and their ability to earn that
income cannot be taken for granted.”
