Community Asset Mapping

To initiate this task, I interviewed our school's community liaison. This is the one individual that

connects our school to the community. Through this individual, I was able to find out the various resources

available to our students and their families in terms of health and mental issues. There are various organizations

within the county that service our students. One particular organization that falls within our city limit is the

second largest employer in the city, Kaiser Permanente. There are various programs through this institution that

our students and their families are able to access such as educational programs and workshops to support mental

and physical wellness. The community liaison also emphasized the various programs I outlined in my previous

findings that the school has to service our students and parents. She confirmed my previous assessment in

terms of low parental involvement and asked me to share any insights that might develop from this plan to

increase these numbers.

Now looking outward into the community, I have discovered that there are numerous venues that exist,

which the school can greatly benefit from. The city has a great Parks and Recreational Program that funds and

supports numerous academic and sports programs that services students and their families after school and

during the weekends. The Teen Center is one such place that provides tutoring and a computer lab for teens to

access, as well as a skater park for teens to utilize. These are some of the services available within the

community which the school can do a better job to tap into to better serve our students. The following is a list of

resources that the school can tap into for additional academic, recreational, and career focus. Each resource will

described based on its current utilization and or potential.

Community Mapping Activities Significant Aha Moments for CoP Members

Baldwin Park is the original home of InNOut. Its

headquarters are located within city limits. Today it
houses its own university (training center) that provides
training for future workers. In the past, the school used
to collaborate with this corporation and received
numerous incentives for our students. However, this
relationship is no longer in existence.

The Arts and Recreational Center is a community based
program/building that sponsors various arts shows
(public and district wide) to promote the arts. It is also
utilized to hosts various events (public and school
related) to support various programs. Currently, school
wide programs like AVID and Dual Language hosts their
end of the year celebrations at a minimal fee.

2) Arts Recreational Center

Morgan Park is one of the largest parks and facilities for

the city of Baldwin Park. It houses numerous buildings
that host year-long recreational classes, serves as an
afterschool sports facility, provides computer usage for
the public and in the summer and throughout the year
hosts numerous festivals, carnivals, and recreational
activities for the residents of this city. Connection with
the high school is limited to festive events when they
recruit our students to serve as volunteers. This resource

The BPUSD Performance Art Center or PAC as it is better

known is a district wide building art center that provides
schools with a venue for their numerous musical events.
However, most events are structure based and limited to
school performance; parent utilization is limited and
almost non-existent.

Baldwin Parks newly renovated public library services
the residents of the city by providing computer
workshops, a homework center for young children and
teens, as well as various other services to promote
literacy for the community. This facility is also not
utilized to its full potential. Students are encouraged to
visit the library to check out books and access online
resources. In the past, the school used to collaborate
with library technicians to help students access these

Library deteriorated.
Kaiser Permanente is another organization whose
connection with the school is vital. As a result of current
efforts to move into career pathways, the school has
established a partnership with this organization.
Currently, students are able to complete some internship
programs with this organization. However, its ties could
be stronger and could utilized a stronger connection with
parents. Basic services could be brought on service
parents on campus and establish a potential community

Baldwin Park has its own Police Department and it holds

has teen programs to support community involvement.
However, current relationship with the community is
very frail and the school district is very hesitant to
increase connection due to the volatile times in our
current national political system. Even though the city
has enacted the policy of a sanctuary city, the city and
district are very skeptical about their continued work
