LECTURE ONE: KINEMATICS
(20/02/2015: A study into the motion of particles)

BRIEF SUMMARY
(Not a replacement for notes, take your notes guys)
A position is defined by a magnitude, direction, and origin.
You can define the origin wherever you want.
Velocity is defined as the change in position over time.
Acceleration is defined as the change in velocity over time.
We can split a vector into its components.
Splitting is useful if we only care about one component.
Gravity near the surface of earth creates an acceleration
downwards of 9.8 metres per second squared.

CHALLENGE PROBLEMS
(These should be a challenge. If you need help, Ill give you a hint, and if that doesnt work Ill
explain it to the class)

Challenge number 1: Proving projectile motion.

Projectile motion can be derived from everything I have taught today. What projectile motion
means is when a body is under the influence of GRAVITY ALONE. But this happens all the time,
for instance when I drop my pen, when I jump into the air, all are cases of projectile motion.
Combining the use of splitting vectors into their components, and algebra, we can find
numerous interesting equations.
-The projectile in this question is projected up at an initial velocity of u metres per second, and
at an angle theta from the horizontal.

a) Assuming that the ground is even and flat, derive an expression for how long the projectile
stays up in the air.
b) Find the projectiles maximum height.
c) Find the projectiles maximum range (ie its change in displacement after coming back to
earth.)
^This is all you need to know how to do for projectile motion, the rest are just rearrangements
of the same problems.

Pok stands at the edge of a cliff. The cliff is 100 metres high. There is a tank, initially 50
metres away from the base of the cliff, that is moving to the right with constant velocity of 10
metres per second. How fast must Pok throw a book of mass 1 kg if the book is to hit the tank.
