a. Non-prescription/Over-the-counter drug
b. Prescription
c. Regulated Drugs
d. Prohibited Drugs

Non-prescription drugs are drugs that can be bought in a Pharmacy without the need to
show a prescription from a doctor while prescribed drugs are drugs that can be bought with the
need of showing a prescription from a doctor. [1]
Regulated drugs are drugs that are approved and legalized by the Philippine Drug
Enforcement Agency or PDEA. This includes the prescribed or the non-described drugs. On the
other hand, prohibited drugs are drugs that are destructive to the human body and therefore it is
not legalized by the PDEA.
This proper distribution of drugs is stated in Republic Act No. 9165 or the Comprehensive
Dangerous Drugs act of 2002.[3]

2. Differentiate drug from


a. food supplements
b. traditional herbal medicine.

Drugs are supplements that have been tried and tested to have the same effect in many
people with certain diseases or sickness while food supplements are vitamins and minerals that
enhance our daily diet but does not cure any kind of sickness or disease. Whereas, Traditional
Herbal Medicine are plants that our ancestors believed have cured many diseases. [2]
The Republic Act No. 10611 or Food Safety Act of 2013, an administrative order by the
Department of Health through the Food and Drug Administration, stated the rules and regulations
for food supplement and traditional herbal medicine.[4]

3. Differentiate Branded from generics medicines.

Branded medicines are made by companies that have been executing a lot of laboratory
and experimental works to make sure that the medicine works efficiently and with fewer side
effects. On the other hand, generic medicines are medicines that are cheaper but as effective as
the branded medicines.
Republic Act No. 6675 or the Generics Act of 1988 is an act to promote require and ensure
the production of an adequate supply, distribution and acceptance of drugs and medicines
identified by their generic names. [5]
