TUTORIAL 7
ENERGY EQUATION AND ITS APPLICATION

1. A Venturimeter with an entrance diameter of 0.3 m and a throat diameter of 0.2 m is used
to measure the volume of gas flowing through a pipe. The discharge coefficient of the meter is
0.96.Assuming the specific weight of the gas to be constant at 19.62 N/m3, calculate the volume
flowing when the pressure difference between the entrance and the throat is measured as 0.06
m on a water U-tube manometer. [0.816 m3/s]

2. A pitot-static probe is used to measure the velocity of an aircraft flying at 3000 m where
the air density is equal to 0.909 kg/m3. if the differential pressure reading is 3 kPa, determine
the velocity of the aircraft. [81.2 m/s]

3. Determine the manometer reading, h, for

the flow shown in Figure 1.
(3.66 Munson)
[0.37 m]

4. The specific gravity of the manometer fluid shown

in Figure 2 is 1.07. Determine the volume flow rate, Q,
if the flow is inviscid and incompressible and the
flowing fluid is: -
i. Water
ii. Air at standard conditions. (3.67 Munson)
[i. 1.06 x 10-3 m3/s; ii. 3.02 x 10-3 m3/s]

5. Water flows through the branching

pipe shown in Figure 3 below. If viscous
effects are negligible, determine the
pressure at section (2) and the pressure at
section (3).

6. A 20 cm diameter horizontal pipe
attached to a reservoir, as shown in
20 cm Figure 4. The water surface in the
4.5 m reservoir is 4.5 m above the horizontal
pipe, as shown. The total head loss
between the water surface in the
Water jet reservoir and the water jet at the end of
the pipe is 2 m. Determine the velocity
and flow rate of the water being
Figure 4 discharged from the pipe.
[7 m/s; 2.2 x 10-3 m3/s]

7. Water shooting out of a pipe and nozzle h

under conditions shown in Figure 5. Assume
negligible head loss. Determine the maximum
height above the nozzle to which the water jet Nozzle
will rise (h = ?). Diameter = 100 mm

8. A smooth plastic, 10-m-long garden hose with an uniform inside diameter of 20 mm is used to drain a
considerably large pool as is shown in Figure 6. If viscous effects are neglected, what is the volume flow
rate from the pool? [9.125 x 10-4 m3/s]

9. A pressurized tank of water has a 10-cm-diameter
orifice at the bottom, where water discharges to the
atmosphere. The water level is 3 m above the outlet.
The tank air pressure above the water level is 300 kPa
3m (absolute) while the atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa.
10 cm Neglecting frictional effects, determine the initial
discharge rate of water from the tank. [0.168 m3/s]
