About 1.1 billion people have no access to any
type of improved drinking source of water; 84%
of them live in rural areas.
Unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene claim the
lives of an estimated 1.5 million children under
the age of five each year.
About 2.6 billion people, more than 40% of the
world population lack even a simple improved
latrine, they do not use a toilet and defecate in
the open or in unsanitary places.
A healthy and safe environment is a basic and fundamental human right.
Through achieving environmental sustainability, we will fulfil the
prerequisite requirements for long-term human well-being.
What does environmental sustainability mean?
Environmental sustainability refers it to the practice of protecting and
maintaining the Earths resources while ensuring that human byproducts
(waste, emissions) do not exceed the planets carrying capacity.
Ways to ensure environmental sustainability
The UN estimates that some 20m to 50m tonnes of e-waste
are generated worldwide each year, comprising more than
5% of all municipal solid waste

The current WEEE arising across the EU27 is estimated at
8.7 million tonnes a year , but the amount collected and
treated is estimated at only 2.1 million tonnes or 25%
