Being part of conformity society, will you conform to the society as the other people? What

influences the character to act differently from the others? Ray Bradbury has written a short story

named Fahrenheit 451 that reflects about the conformity society that people are living during

that time. No one can be unique and original, however, some characters think differently and this

lead to the point where the conflict started. In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury shows that these

characters such as Clarisse, Montag and Mildred have their own conflict inside which illustrates and

reflects the chaos and transformation of the society.

A curious seventeen years old girl who was kicked out of the school and acted differently

from the other characters. Clarisse believes in her own opinion and wants to be original in her own

way. Do you ever read any of the books you burn? (p. 5) said Clarisse. She stands against the law,

the book must be read and should not be ignored. From my perspective, she believes that if the book

would have been read, the society would not transformed into this way. Society during that time

will be better and children in her own age will not kill each other. The words society that she has

defined did not match with the society that she lived in. It will not be chaos like this if the school

was not shortened and disciplines are more strict. Clarisse is a type of person that we need to have

in our society. She has a thoughtful, deliberate mind and brave to act different from the others and

this is what made her character stands out from the others. Compare Clarisse to Mildred, these two

characters are totally different. Clarisse stands for the truth of the society that in one day the society

would be changed into better way while Mildred stands for the bad side of technology that her life

needs to be relied on.

Montag is a man who served society by doing some significant duty for about ten years

without questioning why. He has a hard time in the story because after he talked with Clarisse, he

became to be more thoughtful about the pandemonium society. His character began to develop

slowly during each chapter and finally he found his own conflict inside his mind which was about

the books. "It took some man a lifetime maybe to put some of his thoughts down, looking around at

the world and life, and then I came along in two minutes and boom! it's all over. (p. 49) said

Montag. His point of view toward the books has been changed already. He thinks that its take a lot

of effort to write the book, hence the fireman should not burn the books without good reasons. He

became appreciate to the book and believes that the books have a good quality inside. He is a good

reflection to the chaos society according to his attitude toward the books. He believed that the book

is the important key to solve this undisciplined society.

As the world outside is going on, she is always sitting in the parlour and talking to them.

Mildreds routine is simple and easy. Her character might not grab readers attention immediately

like Montag and Clarisse do, however, her character has some interesting parts as we go along the

chapters. Her character and action, such as an attempt to suicide, can perfectly demonstrate how

badly society is and how life was ruined by the technology. She was addicted to the technology and

it effects her thinking skills which made her character lack of conscience. For example, she did not

care and feel regret about the old woman that burned herself with the books. She thinks that old

woman deserve to die. "Let me alone, I didn't do anything. (p. 49) said Mildred during when

Montag convinced her to read the books with him. From this quote, Mildred did not intentionally

want to show her selfishness but because she is lack of conscience and addicted to the technology,

so finally she revealed her true colors. She decided to leave Montag in difficult time while in the

normal society, they will help each other to walk through the difficult times instead. This implies

that the society has altered already.

In the final analysis, the society in Fahrenheit 451 has changed into a bad way which each

character can reflect different part of transform society. Clarisse reflects about the violence society

in the school while Montag reflects the society in the real world about the books. Furthermore,

Mildred reflects society that technology has played an important role in our lives. Lastly, the book is

not valuable, but the things inside the book such as the idea and knowledge are valuable. It is worth

more than the things that you are trying to get for your whole life such as money.
