Course Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students shall be able to:

CO1 Explain various fluid flow phenomena and governing principles in Fluid Mechanics. [PO1, LO1,
SS1]{C2}.
CO2 Apply fundamental laws to solve problems in Fluid Mechanics. [PO1, LO1, SS1]{C3}.
CO3 Analyze problems related to Fluid Mechanics. [PO2, LO3, SS1]{C4}.
CO4 Evaluate selected problems in Fluid Mechanics. [PO4, LO3, SS5]{C6}.

Syllabus Content

1.0 The Differential Approach to Flow Analysis (6 hours)


1.1 Velocity field; Acceleration field; Local and convective accelerations
1.2 Derivation of continuity equation in 3D and its simplification
1.3 Derivation of Navier- Stokes (momentum) equation. Application of NSE
1.4 Application of continuity, Navier-Stokes equation and Energy equations to simple
problems

2.0 Potential Flow (9 hours)


2.1 Inviscid flow approximations. Euler equation
2.2 The stream function and velocity potential
2.3 Vorticity and irrotationality
2.4 Frictionless irrotational flows. Orthogonality of streamlines and velocity potential lines
2.5 Plane potential flows; Uniform flow, source, sink and irrotational vortex; Circulation
2.6 Superposition of plane flow solutions; Rankine half body, doublet, and Rankine oval. Flow
past a circular cylinder with circulation; Kutta-Joukowski Lift Theorem

3.0 Flow Past Immersed Bodies (9 hours)


3.1 Boundary layer structure and thickness over a flat plate
3.2 Derivation of Integral Momentum equation
3.3 Empirical Blasius solution of the laminar flat plate boundary layer
3.4 Transition; Momentum integral estimates of the turbulent boundary layer
3.5 Boundary layers with pressure gradient
3.6 Experimental External Flow; Forces and moments on a body immersed in flow; Skin
friction drag and pressure drag; Profile drag
3.7 Drag and lift coefficient Drag of various shape objects and Reynold number; Drag
reduction
4.0 Fluid Machinery (8 hours)
4.1 Classification of turbomachines
4.2 Elementary pump and turbine theories. Velocity triangles
4.3 Centrifugal pump; Performance curves
4.4 Axial flow pump; Performance curves
4.5 Pumps arrange in parallel and in series
4.6 Turbines; Reaction turbines vs. impulse turbines
4.7 Radial flow and axial flow turbine
4.8 Impulse turbine

5.0 Compressible Flow (10 hours)


5.1 Brief review of thermodynamics properties of ideal gas and energy equation
5.2 Speed of sound and Mach number
5.3 Isentropic flow with area changes. Area-Mach number relation
5.4 Isentropic flow in converging-diverging section; Pressure and Mach number variation
along the section; Choked flow
5.5 Normal shock wave; Mach number relations
5.6 Momentum, Continuity and Energy equations across a shock wave
5.7 The Rankine-Hugonoit Relationship between density and pressure
5.8 Introduction to oblique shock wave
5.9 Frictionless flow with heat transfer; Mach number relations
5.10 Flow with friction without heat transfer

Teaching Methodology

Lecture
Lectures are given to cover the basic principles of each topic. Reading materials and relevant examples will
be provided. Individual assignment and/or quizzes will be given on a regular basis upon completion of
several selected topics.

Tutorial
In-depth discussions of assignments or problems, which are given during lecture, will be conducted during
tutorial period.

Assessment

Course Work : 40%


-Test : 30%
-Assignments and / or Quizzes : 10%

Final Examination : 60%
