Abstract

In Half the Sky there are five thematic issues that are presented: Gender-Based Violence, Sex

Trafficking and Intergenerational Prostitution, Maternal Mortality, Economic Empowerment,

and Education. Of these themes, sex trafficking is the defining conflict of the 21st century for

women in developing countries. Sex Trafficking is another form of modern slavery that happens

anywhere in the world. It denies freedom to millions of women, men, and children. Sex

trafficking victims dont only lose their freedom, it damages them mentally in ways that will

leave a mark, damaging them. It can happen to anyone by fooling you they are a friend, by false

job advertisement, family arrangements, or abduction. Governments need to increase the strength

of their law enforcement to take action against the trafficking and co-operation with other

countries to ensure that no person that is being trafficked is taken to another country. It could

decrease the number of women and children being trafficked. Devastatingly, sex trafficking is

the third largest international crime, appalling, it produced 32 billion dollars every year.

Throughout the world and history males have used women as sex slaves. Today the

problem of sex trafficking is victimizing millions of young women and this is a worldwide

problem. Sex trafficking involves abduction of girls that can be as young as 11 years old,

beating, brainwashing, starving, and raping. The girls have nowhere to turn to and in some

countries the authorities are even involved in using these girls. Overtime when the women are

older they tend to seek help before it affects their own children.Although many people believe

we eliminated slavery, the reality of it is that our modern slavery is human trafficking. Slavery

implies the purchase of human beings being sold as objects because its profitable for the

traffickers. We are in need of severe worldwide collaboration to get rid of this traumatic

situation. There are organizations that are addressing this problem and can truly help change this.

To begin to understand sex trafficking, we need to know how they operate and how the

girls are chosen and caught. According to Ark of Hope for Children, the simplest way a trafficker

captures a victim is by false advertisement or pretend to be a affection significant to manipulate

them of fake promises money or work. Theyre also billboards and flyers are put up in poor

neighborhoods for young girls and boys. Most of the victims are also runaways since theyre

vulnerable. Theyre approached by traffickers in shelters or any public places.

The buyers are nicknames Johns. According to Smith.H, Walking Prey there are two

types of pimps, Romeo pimps and gorilla pimps. Romeo pimps are the ones lure the victims with

romance on the other hand gorilla pimps will use violence to control the victims. After the

process is successful on the pimps behalf they try a atmosphere of family, the pimps will act

like everybody is family but sooner or later theyll let their rage out and the girls will be stuck in

their hands. Theyll be perform horrific acts of torture on the girls if they try to leave. Theyll

feel to shameful to leave as time goes by and they'll give us hope, thinking they deserve it

because its the only thing they know. The children can be sold in any place, restaurants, strip

clubs, in cars, online, as long as its hidden. Overtime theyve figured out more ways to hide

himself under the open web to sell the girls online from all around the world.

The effects of sex trafficking can lead to many suicides and traumatized thatll need long

period of rehabilitation. Not only does it harm them mentally but it can lead to physically, from

self harm to sexually transmitted diseases and other disorders, PSD. Countries can work together

to increase security in victims being transported into other countries.

I think they are effective solutions to decrease the trafficking but I dont think it can be

stopped. Those ugly horrible people will always find a way to make money, they dont care how

many lives they ruined. I think the simple way to handle this is to kill the traffickers or a slow

painful death, really slow. The victims are the ones who need the help since half the time after

theyre rescued they shunned from their parents and return to the ring. I dont know an exact

solution but I know theyll need all sorts of help from mentally, physically, and whos gonna pay

for her everything if they have nothing. Helping them is a long path and I want to help but

against money is the one standing in the way.

I chose this topic because the part that got my attention is that parents and stranger will

sell children just for money. Were the ones who came up with the system of money though we

dont deal or didnt even think of the consequences. The worst part of it all is the sex acts theyre

forced to do at a young age. Their childhood were stolen for someones money. I dont believe

there can be a permanent solution but we cant give up, we cant save everyone but we can save

some.

In this website it talks more about the victims than other things. It briefly explains how

many victims are runaways and where they come from. It mostly talks about the

traumatic experience the victims suffers in the aftermath. This website is very helpful to

me because theyre an organization who want to help child trafficking. I can really use

this information when Im trying to explain to people its not the victim's fault, it never

is. It has statistics that get recently updated for everyone to have the right information.

This relates to my topic because it shows the darker part of sex trafficking that kids also

get involved in it to, unwillingly.

I really trust this website because it shows a lot of facts and it goes really in detail

how big of a problem this is. It also talks about the effects mental and physical of the

victims. This website also got many sources listed. I can really use this information

when I explain the solution to this whole crisis. It can really help when Im trying to

explain how we can cure them by stating the possibly mental or physical problems they

might have. This perfectly fits my topic because even though men are also trafficked

still most of them are women and I can use this website to combine facts to find a

solution help the female victims and the males too.

Kristof, N. D., & WuDunn, S. (2009). Half the sky: Turning oppression into opportunity for

women worldwide. New York: Alfred A. Knopf.

The book, Half the Sky, focuses on topics like education, maternal mortality, sex

trafficking and gender based violence. Each chapter is different from the next and not

only does it talk about peoples stories but on how to solve them. I trust this source

because the authors, Nicholas and Sheryl themselves went to the cities and countries to

listen to the peoples stories. Theyve interviewed and documented many peoples story.

Theyve got reliable statistics as they have their source on the end of their book. They

teach us how one single person can make a bigger impact with more voices and help

transform peoples lives for the better. This book will be useful when Im writing about

the effects sex trafficking leaves behind.

(1st ed). New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan.

The book, Walking Prey: How Americas Youth Are Vulnerable to Sex Slavery, focuses

on all the factors in sex trafficking. It goes expands and talk about the signs, the buyer,

the rescue, and how to prevent this from happening. It really talks about everything that

happens during sex trafficking and it will really help with my essay. I can trust that this

book is reliable because not only has she written down her sources, she also talks from

experience. She herself has known that feeling many girls feel that have been or are still

trapped in that situation. It makes a better source for me to use. The author, Holly, is a

known advocate against any form of human trafficking. She has turned to many

organizations like the AMBER alert program. The fact that she has testified to the

Congress shows how shes Indefatigable and assiduous. She has given handy facts that

Ill be able to use in my essay.

United Nations. UN Data. Condoms use at last high-risk sex, 15-24 years old, men, percentage.

(2016).

This UN data will is very reliable because it many nations who share information with

the government. I trust this source because its been accepted by the government on the

website that it is valid. Information like this will become useful when Ill need to show

statistics that talks about the risk of diseases women can get. It also shows the sources

where they get their information from. This topic relates to my topic because its usual

for men to not wear condoms when raping the women causing them to receive a disease

from him or become pregnant. These statistics can help show what happens behind doors

when we look closer to the buyer or the seller.
