Snow storm Stella reminded us of winter drama by delivering an impressive blan-
ket of snow across a big swath of the Northeast. While talking to my father about
late winter/early spring storms, he said, in my day, these storms were always
called a poor mans manure. Turns out, this is not a legend or an old wives tale. It
is absolutely true.
On December 2, 1871, in a newspaper called the Queenlander, there was an
article about the effects of a late winter storm on farming. These storms were
called a poor mans manure because the late snow is rich in nitrogen that helps
plants grow. It costs the farmer nothing to procure, draw, or spread. Ploughing
this snow under breaks up the soil producing a fine mellow soil that favors germi-
nation, and enriches the soil. Or better yet, when this snow is allowed to melt, has
an advantage over the rain that usually starts spring grasses, because rain beats
down gently, but melting snow furnishes uniform irrigating streams for a long time.
There is a poor mans substitute for just about everything. Having joint bank
accounts has been thought of as a poor mans will. Cod serves nicely as a poor
mans lobster. Of course, there is the Poor Mans Almanac, for those who cant
afford a fancy eduction or expensive equipment to bring in a fine crop, determine
the best time to breed a pig, the best time to fish, or to plant a certain seed. I often
fix for dinner a poor mans dish cooked in a cast iron skillet, with leftover ingredi-
ents that I have on hand. It might involve using up some potatoes, pepper, onion,
an egg, some cheese common staples found in any house, rich or poor, over
many hundreds of years. Ive heard you can even join a poor mans yacht club if
you have something less than a yacht.
Democritus said that by desiring little, a poor man makes himself rich, and an
ancient proverb says that gratefulness is the poor mans payment.

A COMMUNITY SPAGHETTI DINNER will be held at the North River United Methodist Church,

Thurman Maple Days, Weekends, March 11 - 26. Three
weekend celebrations first day closes with 58th annual Maple
Sugar Party. Theres a saying in the North Country that there are
just two seasons here winter and a couple of weeks of pretty
rough sledding. Thurman folks would beg to differ. This small town
that boasts Warren Countys four largest maple producers, would
add a third maple season. Maple season is as fickle as last
falls leaf rattling this way and that on a leathery stem in a gusty
wind. It begins when winters icy grip relaxes and allows the mercury
to rise above 32 degrees, and continues as long as the days thaw
and the nights freeze. It grinds to a stop for sustained cold and
starts again with the next thaw. The producers watch and wait, and
then, literally, go with the flow. For some in Thurman this winter,
maple season began in January. Hidden Hollow Maple Farm seized
the opportunity to tap and boil, getting a good start on their years
harvest. And, later, with the mid-February thaw, those who had not
been able to tap early have been working almost around the clock
trying to keep up with the maple bounty of this month. By March
11, the start of the free open houses featured at Thurman Maple
Days, the sugarhouse shelves will be sagging under the weight of
freshly made all-natural syrup, sugar, cream and candies. And there
will be maple peanuts, popcorn and cotton candy to tantalize the
taste buds. But thats just the beginning! There are tours and talks
at each sugarhouse. Valley Road Maple Farm features a pancake
breakfast with all the trimmings, Hidden Hollow will offer taste
tests of their various dark syrups, and Adirondack Gold takes families
to the sugarbush closest to the sugar house to tap they old fashioned
way and listen for the first drop of sap to hit the bottom of the
bucket. Toad Hill Maple will knock your wooly socks off with its
hourly trebuchet firings and a wagon ride over the new traditional
covered bridge to the vacuum shed and the sugar bush beyond.
Other nearby farms will welcome guests as well. Peru Llama Farm
welcomes families and invites kids to role play a llama in training,
and to meet the real llamas. Kids ten and under may feed treats to
the llamas. Martins Lumber and Certified Tree Farm gives talks
about sustainable forestry, offers sawing demos (weather
permitting), and invites you to browse through their wooden wares,
Sterling chain maille, and paper bead jewelry. Just down the road,
stop in at Nettle Meadow Farm for herd and sanctuary tours, and
cheesy samples and sales. Sample tempting delicacies like Gold
Medal Winning Kunik with Maple Infused Chutney, Habanero Peach
Fromage Frais on a Tortilla Chip, cheesecake and truffles. March
11, the first day Maple Days, concludes with the annual Maple
Sugar Party, held at Thurman Town Hall, serving 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Enjoy a sumptuous buffet with dessert of traditional maple jackwax,
also known as sugar on snow. Entertainment is provided by the
Warren County Ramblers. Thurman Maple Days and Sugar Party
are made possible, in part, by Warren County occupancy taxes
granted by the town of Thurman.

at Poultney High School. Doors opens at 10 AM and ends at 4

The Maplefest Fun Run starts from the back of Poultney High
School! Go to the Poultney Chamber Website at

up from downtown Poultney merchants. This run is for every-
one, including pets on a leash. Registration in person at 9 AM
at the back of Poultney High School, race at 10 AM. T-shirts for
the first 50 runners. Maple prizes for the first 3 places in each
category.
Maple Prince and Princess! The winners will be crowned af-
ter the Official Tree Tapping at 10 AM, on the front lawn of Green
Mountain College, with Greens Sugarhouse handling the con-
tests. Poultneys own Maple Sugar Bear will officiate, and the
winners will be given their own miniature Sugar Bears and
maple prizes from Greens Sugarhouse to take home. They
will also have the opportunity to ride with Sugar Bear in an open
convertible in the 4th of July Parade.
Maple Sugarhouse Tours on both Saturday and Sunday, at
