Report layout
The report is done using the proper format and uses Harvard referencing system. The
report must follow the template with proper font, page number and alignment. All spellings
must be checked and all figures, tables and equations must be numbered accordingly. There
should not be any questions (any sentence with question mark) asked in the report.
Abstract
The abstract provides a brief overview of the substance of the report; usually no more
than half a page. It is not an introduction to the topic. The abstract should outline all the
key features of your report, including the topic, what you did and how you did it, and the
main outcomes of your work.

Introduction
The introduction provides the background information needed for the rest of your
report to be understood. It is usually three quartes to one page in length. The purpose of the
introduction is to set the context for your report, provide sufficient background information
for the reader to be able to follow the information presented, and inform the reader about
how that information will be presented.

Objectives
In this section, you can obtain the objectives from your lab manual provided during the
lab session.
Procedure
In this section, you should explain the steps done to setup the apparatus. You may use
figures to help you in your explanation. You are required to write the procedure in passive
voice
Analysis
You are required to tabulate your results accordingly and allowed to follow the
datasheet in your lab manual. You should answer the questions provided in your lab
manual. The graphs should be drawn by using Microsoft Excel and strictly no
handsketching unless instructed by instructor.
Discussion
This section should be written after the analysis. In this section, you state your
observations and findings during your experiment. You should discuss why there is any
discrepancy in your results. Finally you are required to give suggestions/ recommendations
for improvement of the experiment. Discuss based on evidence (not on your own general
ideas). Are the results significant? Why are there differences. Explain and summarize
results.
Conclusions
The conclusions section provides an effective ending to your report. The content should
relate directly to the aims of the project as stated in the introduction, and sum up the
essential features of your work. This section:

All references to books, papers, and other publications must be fully and correctly
quoted to be useful to the reader.
A citation shows that information comes from another source. The reference list gives
the details of these sources. You need to use in-text citations and provide details in the
references section when:
o factual material
you quote word-for-word from another work (when you do this the page
number must be given in the in-text citation). Here, we are using referencing style
as in the author-date (Harvard) system.
Appendices
These contain material that is too detailed to include in the main report, such as raw
data or detailed drawings. The conventions for appendices are as follows:
each appendix must be referred to by number (or letter) at the relevant point in the
text.
General Requirements
The Report/ Proposals/ Thesis must be formatted with a font size of 12pt if
Times New Roman or a font size of 11pt if Arial and 1.5 line spacing. Please
ensure the paragraphs are properly aligned/ justified.
A Report/ Proposals/ Thesis should be in chapters and the structure should not go
beyond the second level. Instead of adding subsections at the third level you may
use bullets if required.
All information provided must be straight to the point, precise and all information
must be accordingly cited and well presented. Please avoid plagiarism.
All figures and tables must have a title and referenced i.e. indicate the source.
There might be slight variations in the order and content required, please do
approach your relevant lecturer for future assistance.
The Report/ Proposals/ Thesis must be in binding.
