1 Choosing a steel sub-grade

1.1 Introduction
An exposed steel structure is proposed. The steel is S355 to BS EN 10025 and the
thickest element is 30 mm. Beams are welded to the column flanges and the
maximum tensile stress is 200 N/mm2. Choose an appropriate sub-grade to avoid
brittle fracture.

1.2 Sub-grade selection

Basic requirement: t Kt1 2.4.4

Since the maximum thickness t = 30 mm, the steel sub-grade should be chosen such
that
t1 30/K

The nominal yield strength Ynom = 355 N/mm2

The maximum tensile stress in the component = 200 N/mm2
Therefore, stress > 0.3 Ynom

For welded connections to unstiffened flanges with stress > 0.3 Ynom Table 3
K = 0.5

The requirement for t1 is therefore

t1 60 mm

For BS EN 10025 - S355 K2 in external conditions (15C), t1 = 66 mm. Table 4

Therefore, Kt1 = 0.5 66 = 33 mm

30 mm< 33 mm OK

Finally, check that the maximum thickness in the component does not exceed the Table 6
limit for which the full Charpy impact value applies, t2, as given in Table 6.

Basic requirement: t < t2

For all sections of grade S355 to BS EN 10025, t2 = 100 mm.

30 mm < 100 mm OK

Adopt BS EN 10025 - S355 K2
