Presentation 38.
39. 7 minutes

1. T says: To start the class, can anybody tell me the definition and use of emphasis in a
sentence? You can use your phone to look it up if you have to. [Ss: opinionated
answers. If Ss are close to the answer, then T encourages. If not, then encourage and
lead towards the right answer]
40.
41. T says: So, emphasis is the stress laid on a word or words to indicate special
meanings or importance.

42.

2. T says: By the way, does anyone know about the new iPhone 7 that Apple has
released recently?
43.
44. T says: Who here owns an iPhone? [Ss: some raises hand, others do not]
What kind of phone were you using to look up the answer? [Ss: variety of answers]
Do you like your phone? Is it easy to use? How do you feel about the new iPhone 7?
Do you know what features it has? Do you think that the new iPhone 7 would be
better than your current phone?

45.

3. T passes out the script and says: Well, were going to watch an advertisement video
about the iPhone 7. While you watch, I want you to pay attention to what the
advertiser is saying. Pay special attention to the words that he emphasizes in order to
promote his product, especially to the words he uses to compare to not only other
phones, but also previous iPhones. I want you to underline those words that he
emphasizes in the video
46.
47. T plays an advertisement video Apple-Introducing iPhone 7
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6dsRpVyyWs) to Ss.

48.
TESOL Certificate Programs

4. Before the advertiser starts, T says: So while youre watching the video, what will
you be looking for? [Ss: words that the advertiser emphasizes. If not, correct]
49.
50. While the Ss are watching, T observes the students and highlights the words that
the advertiser are emphasizing. Video ends.

51.

5. T says: Alright, nice job everyone. So can anybody tell me the words that the
advertiser emphasizes? [Ss should list: see answer key; if other answers arise,
evaluate then ask why it can be correct or incorrect] So is anyone here going to buy
the iPhone 7? Anyone that wants to buy it but has no money? [Ss should provide
various answers]

52.

6. T asks: Can anyone explain why we use emphasis on certain words? [Ss provides
various reasons] Good, good. Do you think its effective? Would you start using
emphasis in your sentences, especially for business? If I started a business and I was
advertising, I know I would.

53.
54.
Practice: 55.
56.
57. 8 minutes
1. T says: Ok! Now we are going to practice using comparative and superlative to
emphasize as we just learned. I have five sentences here which describe five
different situations. The situations are related to your backgrounds or your
experiences.
58.
59. Please look at the handout I just passed out to you. The first one is Keith
wasnt annoyed when we cancelled the meeting. (least). Actually, here, we want to
emphasize that Keith is really annoyed about it. Considering that we can only use
the word in the parenthesis, we can rewrite the sentence into Keith was least
annoyed when we cancelled the meeting to show the emphasis.
60.
61. Now, Id like you to work on the last four sentences with your neighbor
and please pay attention to the emphasis, and it would be better if you can stress on
your emphasis part when you read the sentences out loud later.
62.
63. T asks a comprehension check question: What should you pay attention to
to rewrite the sentences? [Ss should say: Emphasis.] Perfect. Now I give you four
minutes to do it.
64.
2. Ss work on the sentences and T walk around to see how things going and if there is
any question that Ss want to ask.

65.
3. T says: Ok, times up. Lets go from one by one to show me what youve got. [Ss
demonstrate the sentences with their rewritten sentences with emphasis]
66.
67. T says: Good job! Emphasis is used to express strong feelings. It should
be good feelings or bad. Seems like all of you have got it. Good!
68.
4. T says: Im very glad that all of you have done pretty good so far. Now we are
moving to the next part, where youll be able to freely use emphasis to
communicate.
69.
70.
Production 71.
72.
73. 5 minutes
1. T says: Ok, we have just seen a lot of good examples of emphasis in a video, and
weve practiced emphasis by using comparative and superlative words. Now I will
divide you into three-or-four-person groups and give you 5 minutes to discuss the
three questions listed on your handout. Each group can choose two of the three
questions to talk about and after you finish, we will share your opinions with the
whole class together. Please pay attention to use comparative and superlative words to
emphasize while you are talking to show your emotions!
74.
75. So, how many questions you can choose to talk about? [Ss should say 2.]
Yes! 2 questions.
76.
77. And to show your strong emotion what should you use during talking? [Ss
should say comparative and superlative words.] Perfect! Ok, lets start!
78.
2. T walks around and monitors students, gives feedback, listens to the opinions and
participates the activity.
79.
80. When time is almost up, T gives a time warning. Then T can choose the
volunteers to share their opinions about the three questions.
81.
82. At the end T says: Well done guys! You all have great opinions.
83.
84.
Wrap Up 85.
86.

87. T says: Ok, you guys did a good job, now I will give you todays assignment,
and I will give you some examples to help you finish the homework.
88.
1. There are five sentences, five phrases and five definitions in this paper. What you
need to do is to find the phrases in the article, and understand their meanings. In
addition, I also give you guys some sentences in this paper to expand on their

meanings. According to both the sentences, please match the words to the definitions.
For example, we can find the meaning of compromising in paragraph 2, the
sentences is Weinzweig was not the least bit interested in expanding geographically
and compromising the uniqueness and purpose of the original deli, and in this paper,
I also give you the sentence The boss warned the accountant that he would be
compromising his career if he didnt recorded the transactions properly. Based on
these 2 sentences, we can know the meaning of compromising is to expose or make
vulnerable to danger, suspicion, scandal, etc.; jeopardize Please finish the rest
outside of class.
89.
2. After finishing the matching, please find the emphasis sentences containing emphasis
words. For example, in paragraph, you can find He also preferred that they stay in
their own neighborhood. Can you do them outside of class? I think you guys can do
a great job. I want you to practice using the emphasis sentences outside of class.
