Sentence Building Race
In this sentence-building activity, students race to make past simple affirmative and negative
complex sentences.

Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each pair of students and cut as indicated.

Procedure

Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a set of cards.

Explain to the students that they are going to race to make ten complex past simple
sentences.

Each sentence contains three clauses. Students have to join the second clause to the first
clause using the conjunction and and the third clause using but. Explain that the third
clause is negative.

Students then work together and race to complete the ten sentences. Students must write
and and but in the spaces provided and lay them out on the table in the correct order.

The first pair of students to complete all of the sentences correctly wins.
