Social Action Checklist Work

Purpose
1. How can social action bring local, national or global change?
The reason for social action is raise awareness of the issues occurring
around the world and gather a reaction from society to feel as though a
change could take place. This is done to forward information to the
population, or campaign that things should be different, and stop bad
situations that are becoming more common. In addition, social action
campaigns change the opinions from the public, on certain subject
through the facts and stories that are presentedby the company. Locally, a
social action in which takes place is the youth social action fund from the
Berkshire community foundation. This holds big potential to create
enjoyable opportunities and skills that can be developed for young kids
around the area. This will then lead them to find better skilled jobs, and
gives them something enjoyable to do rather than hanging round the
streets. This is campaigned through adverts, online social media and in
the Maidenhead Advertiser. Social action takes place for national
reasoning too. For example, Stopober against smoking, this is a 28-day
challenge for people to stop smoking, to change the communitys lifestyle
choices, and make a healthier environment. This is done through television
commercials, showing a range of age groups taking part to raise
awareness of how bad smoking is for you. A global organisation could be
exampled as ARNSA (The Anti-Racism Network of South Africa). This is a
group working on the racism around the world. This is about making the
world have more knowledge on what is happening around us, and to help
each other even across other countries. They advertise anti-racism week,
which enables the inclusion of diverse and multiple philosophies and
practice of fighting racism, and try to push an equal society. They have a
lot of advertisement through social media too; this is done by having a
YouTube page, a Facebook group, and a twitter page using the hashtag of
#becoming. This make the world more aware of information they would of
already knew, and most likely change their opinion on the situation and
show how bad racism has become over the years.
2. How can social action change attitudes?
Attitudes toward a certain subject can change based on what the audience
see and hear. Attitudes are to guide actions and deliberately change the
thought pattern of the public, by hearing certain information and facts on
a topic that they did not know before, has the ability to manipulate the
audience to feel compassion for the social action, and feel as though they
are able to make a small change to the situation. Or, before seeing the
social action the public may of not even known about the situation,
therefore showing the horror of how people live in this world, and give
them knowledge on how things can be different based on their behaviour
and attitudes towards it, becoming very personal. A social action, which
could change the opinions of the audience, is Moms demand action. This is
to show the population how guns are legal in America and things that are
not on the same scale are banned for childrens safety.
This was created in 2012 in response to the devastating shooting at Sandy
Hook Elementary school. Done to minimise the epidemic of gun violence
that affects every community. By involving children, it would make the
audience feel more compassion about the subject and most likely change
their attitudes on whether guns should be legal to use in America. This
issue has continued for years but by involving imagery towards the loved
ones of the pblic, it changes the perceptive of why they should be banned,
and how normalized they have become.
3. How can a social action raise awareness?
The main purpose of social action is to inspire change. Having extremely
high up technology charities now have the ability to make a social action
become worldwide known easily through online and hardcopies. By giving
the audience data that, they would not have known before it means that
they will understand the subject stated better, and feel as though they can
do their part to help. Unless people raise awareness on things by
advertising and making documentaries, society would possibly never of
heard of the things that are going on around them. Most social action
publicity will pull on the audiences heartstrings and relate to their own life
and how it would affect them if someone they cared were in the same
circumstance. Take Kony 2012 as an example, many people were not
aware of this situation before the video came onto social media. The man
who created this video made it very personal and related to his son a lot,
which would pull on the heartstrings of the audience to realise how bad
the situation is. He even stated that if Kony was in America or England this
would have been taken care of before it even began. By doing this on
social media means that, more of a range of audience would hear about it
and want to get involved.

4. How can a social action create access to media production for non-
traditional groups?
This refers to getting people involved that would not normally want to take
part in world activities, for example, people become too ignorant towards
the problems to feel as though it does not concern them. Steortypically
this is upper class people, and do not feel the need to help others. This
also inquires things such as lifestyle choices, religion, family or wealth.
They have an effect on the opinion of people and how they feel on the
subject, and if they want to help the change or not. By making the social
action interesting and factual, it will hit a much larger audience and
change their opinions on the subject by sharing information that they did
not know. I will be creating an example for this by making a social action
documentary based on homelessness around Reading Berkshire. This will
hit the audience of a non-traditional group, as it will be done in a way to
target the younger generation, normally social action doesnt fuss
teenagers or young people but the way in which I will create my
documentary, it will give them an insight to what happens and how they
could possibly help.

5. How can a social action challenge dominant representations and

agendas?
The media creates representations, which influence or reflect onto the way
society think/feel, this is done by showing the public only what the
government want us to know rather than what we should know about what
is happening around the world we live in. Social actions challenge this by
showing problems that are happening right in front of us, which is
changing our opinions on the world. An example of this is the NSPCC. They
are a campaign to rebuild childrens lives after abuse and give them the
best possible help.

By doing high advertisement,

it brings alight how big the subject is and will change the audience
reflection towards it. Children are the most venerable group of people
which is why people should come together to stop abuse. The adverts
used are very personal which would influence society on how they feel
towards the subject, even though they should of worried about it
beforehand.

6. How can a social action create or strengthen community ties?

Communities often come together over an important issue, which
strengthens relationships and shows loyalty to each other, whether that is
online or interacting face to face. If everyone comes together to stop a
certain action, it will bring people closer together and feel as though a
bond had been created, this is important to feel a sense of community and
as though everyone can rely on each other in time of need. Take USAs
new situation now of Donald Trump becoming president. This has created
a community of people who disagree with his views and have come
together to protest about the votes. This has been publicized all round the
world, and have strengthen the communities bond to do better and to not
allow him to make his new changes.
Social action provides information in many different ways. Through campaigns,
stickers, videos and get people to stand out and tell us in the streets about what
they are fighting for. By doing it on many different platforms many different
people can see what you are campaigning for on loads of different sites and
places. This opens to world what you are campaigning for. By social action
people going out and finding out the information themselves this lets the
audience find out information on the subject that they might not be able to find
themselves. Which lets the audience understand what they are fighting for to
make other people aware and get them to understand and share it with friends
to make be more aware of the subject. A good example of this is super size me
because we all know that fast food is bad for us but it was the facts that they
included within the show that we didnt know about to prove and show in detail
about why fast food is bad for us.
Social action campaigns in many different ways to make more people aware of
their subject to everyone on the planet, as they need as many people as they
can to help them fight the cause they are fighting for. What they will do is
highlight the things that needs to be changed and give you all the information to
tell the audience what is happening, once they have done this they will tell the
audience what they can do to make a difference and how to make a difference.
This then lets the audience choose if they want to help and if they do then the
campaign is there to help them make a difference through the certain campaign.
A good example of this would be Jamie Olivers school dinner. This is a good
example because he tells the audience the facts about school dinners and why
they are bad for children that the scientific facts and proof of the facts to make it
believable to audience. It is also he states what he is going to do the campaign
to make a difference so therefore people can see he is trying to make a
difference and has ways he is going to make a difference so people can see
something can be done if people believe in it.
Social action can change voting behaviour because it gives new information to
the audience that they may or may not know and if they see new information
that they did not know on the subject this may change their minds on the issue
because the new information has changed their view. A great example of this is
Donald trump and the way he got America to vote for him. He made his
campaign to look like the audience have power and he is the person making it
happen by doing what the country is most concerned upon. He highlighted things
that people did wrong and what he is going to do to make a difference as a
country and not as a person.
Social action can get into the mainstream media very easily because all they
have to do is find an issue that loads of people are concerned about so when
they make the video it could start of small but if the issue is big in other places
then they will share the video therefore enlarging its popularity within the issue.
Therefore, it may start of as a niche market but if more were to share the issue
and start supporting the action. Then more people will become aware that
something is trying to be changed and will use social media to share it with
everyone and to tell everyone about the issue because if it because big enough,
even if the issue doesnt apply to people they will help the issue because of how
big the social action has become.
Social action will build relationships with subjects because they are doing
something important for the subject so just from the start they are going to be
building a relationship because they are there to help and make a difference to
the subject.
