pealing a Michigan Court of
Appeals ruling to the states
highest court.
Earlier, Menards appealed
Escanabas tax assessment to
the Michigan Tax Tribunal.
The tribunal sided with Men-
ards after the company used
a sales-comparison approach
to argue for a lower valuation
than the one reached by the city.
The citys assessor had used a
cost-less-depreciation approach
when calculating the stores
valuation.
Escanaba appealed the tax
tribunals decision to the Court
of Appeals. The court ruled in
Escanabas favor, and now Me-
nard Inc. is appealing that deci-
sion to the Michigan Supreme
Court.
Some 30 other Michigan mu-
nicipalities have signed on to
the brief. Thirty cities signing

The action came at the request
of Reed City fire chief Jeff
Stein.
Stein told the council his
department sometimes lacks
the number of medical first
responders it needs during day-
time hours. Because people of-
ten work outside the communi-
ties in which they reside, other
departments are faced with the
same situation.
Members of other fire depart-
ments, though, work in Reed
City. Stein asked the council
for permission to let personnel
work for two departments. How-
ell said if things work out as
hoped, the Reed City plan could
work as a model for a lot of oth-
er small, rural departments.
The council also discussed
the intersection of U.S. 10 and
North Chestnut Street.
Council member Dan Bur-
chett said he receives numerous
complaints from city residents
about traffic violations at the
intersection. Burchett received
a go-ahead from the council
to circulate a petition asking
the Michigan Department of
Transportation to do some-
thing to improve safety there.
The council is also accepting
accounts of peoples personal
experiences at the intersection
and after the next meeting will
probably forward the public
comments to M-DOT.
The council also gave its ap-
proval to starting pre-applica-
tion work for a U.S.D.A. grant.
The city hopes to receive $1.4
million from the rural devel-
opment grant to upgrade and
replace the Todd Street water
main and to re-coat the citys wa-
ter tower. The city will be work-

public access site installed on
the Hersey River.
The removal of the old Roth
Street Dam opened up that sec-
tion of the river for recreational
use. The river is becoming an
attractive destination for kayak-
ers. A convenient access site in
the city will make the river even
more user-friendly.
A site evaluation process gave
high marks to a proposed access
site at Westerburg Park. The
site has reasonable access to
the river and adequate parking
and restroom facilities. It also
would have negligible effect on
existing vegetation, reasonable
proximity to pedestrian access
to the businesses of the DDA
and available signs to aid those
moving to and from the site.

A nutriotional St. Patricks What is it?

tion is usually not the first
thing that comes to mind
at St. Patricks Day. Nutri-
tionists at a local wellness
center held an event look-
ing to dispel this notion.
The Savor the Flavor
event held at the Susan
Wheatlake Cancer Center
in Reed City, coincided
with the centers ongoing
celebration of National
Nutrition Month. The
event held on Thursday,
March 16, is part of the
centers larger monthly
nutritional program.
Nutritionist Debi Jenson
facilitated the event and
chose cabbage as a focus
due to both its medicinal
value and its role as a
staple of traditional Irish
food.
The cruciferous veg-
etable ranges in color from
green to purple. Jenson
notes this importance in
advising patients to eat
vegetables of various col-
ors. The variance in color
provides a range of vita-
mins and minerals that are
helpful to the body.
Cabbage is particularly
helpful as a preventative
measure against cancer.
Additional studies have
shown that cabbage can
also be helpful in help-
ing patients manage the
side effects of radiation
therapy.
A pot of Irish White
Bean and Cabbage Stew
served as the centerpiece
of the event. Patients were
encouraged to sample the
stew throughout the day. A
recipe was provided for pa-
tients who desired to cook
at home.
Through the events, Jen-
son hopes to bring aware-
ness to the role nutrition
plays in both the preven-
tion and treatment of
cancer. While a low-calorie
diet is generally accepted
as part of a healthy life-
style,

calorie diet so that patient
have the extra energy to
handle their treatment
Jenson notes this is often
a challenge as the effects
of cancer can make meet-
ing this nutritional goal
challenging.
One of the first things
that treatment impacts
is a patients appetite, so
we work with patients to
achieve an ideal weight,
she said.
