Introduction

WhenlockedtoGPSsatellites,theMCR5000canreadNTP,
NMEA,NENAortimecanbesetmanually.TheMCR5000can
generateNMEA,NENA,PPSorPCtimeviaUSB.
OptionaloutputsincludeNTP,TimeCodebasic(IRIGBand
SMPTE),TimeCodeAdvanced(IRIGAandE),PPOanda10
MHzsinewave.
HoldoveraccuracyandstabilityismaintainedwithaHigh
StabilityOvencontrolledOscillator(HSO).EachMCR5000can
operateona10/100MBitlocalareanetwork.

1.InserttheUSBcablesand
configurationsoftwareCDthat AUSBtypeBporthasbeenincludedontherearofthe
shippedwithyourMCR5000. MCR5000toprovideameansofconfiguringtheoperationof
theMCR5000viasoftwareorasaserialdataport.
2.OnscreenselecttheMCR5000
directory. ToutilizetheUSBportwithahostcomputer,connectaUSB
typeA/BcablefromthehostcomputertotheMCR5000.

firstbeloaded.Asoftwareconfigurationprogram

BATTERYBACKEDRTCANDTCXO
TheMCR5000maintainsitsinternaltimesettingsinbattery
backedmemorylocatedonaRTCchip.ATemperature
CompensatedCrystalOscillator(TCXO)providesa
freewheelingaccuracy(maximumdrift)of+/1minuteper
year(165mS/day).
ThebatterysuppliespowertotheTCXO32kHzoscillatorand
RTCwhentheunitispoweredoff.Thisallowstheinternal
timetobemaintainedandthetimeanddatetoincrement,
whenpowerisoff.Undernormaloperatingcondition,the
memorydevicesmaintainingtheRTCdataispoweredbythe
externalDCpowersupplyanddoesnotrelyonthebatteryfor
dataretention.
Thebatteryisamaintenancefreerechargeablemanganese
lithiumtype.Abuiltinbatterychargingcircuitisusedwhen
theunitispoweredon,eliminatingtheneedfor
maintenance.

TheMCR5000maintainsitsconfigurationparameters
internallyinnonvolatilememory,evenwhenthepoweris
off.Theseconfigurationsettingsincludetheassigned(DHCP
orStatic)IPaddressandnetworksettings,assigneddevice
name,NTPoperationalmode,brightnesslevel,assigned
stratumlevels,Telnetaccess,RTCusagevalidityduring
primaryreferenceoutagesandpassword.Allconfiguration
parameters(exceptforthetime/datestoredintheRTC)may
beresettothefactorydefaultstate(seebelow).

DEVICENAME/DHCPNAMEREGISTRATION

AllMasterclocknetworkappliancesshouldbeprovidedwith
customdevicenamesrelatingtoyourownorganizational
requirements.Itisrecommendedthatarobustnaming
scheme(perhapsbasedonlocation)bedevelopedbefore
devicesareinstalledonacampusorthroughoutabuilding.
Bydefault,devicenamesaretheproductnameabbreviation
Renamethedevicehere followedbythelastoctetofthedevicesEthernetaddress
(MACaddress).
Thedevicenamemaybechangedfromthefactorydefault
namebyenteringauniquenameofupto32characters.
IfaDHCPserverisavailableonthenetworkwhenthe
MCR5000isinstalled,theunitwillbeautoregisteredwiththe
DHCPserver.Thenetworksystemadministratorcanthen

STATICIPCONFIGURATION
TheMCR5000allowsforStaticIPaddress,gatewayandDNS,
networkconfigurationentriestobemademanuallyifno
DHCP/BOOTPserverisavailable.Inaddition,theNTPserver
addressescanbeadjustedmanually.Manualconfiguration 13
requiresdisablingtheDHCPdefaultsviaWinDiscovery(or
otherconfigurationmethod).

TheMCR5000acquiresitsinternalUTCtimereferencefrom
anNTPtimeserverbyusingabuiltinNTPclient.TheNTP
clientisfullyconfigurableandcanoperateinseveralNTP
modestoreferencebothaprimaryandasecondaryNTP
server.Theclientcanbedisabledinordertoallowoperation
oftheunitasastandaloneunitwithoutnetworkconnection.
