Direct Damage-

Specific Effect Infection depend upon the tissue or organ involved

Ex:

Infections of heart muscle and central nervous system

Soft tissue infections of skeletal muscle= Less damaging

Anoxia, Necrosis

Cell and Tissue Damage direct local action by the microorganisms

- Cytoplasmic membranes (site of action)

- Target: Phagocytes ( eg. Brucella, Listeria, Mycobacterium)

- Lysosomal membranes -> Autolyse

- Ex of diseases: Diphttheria, tetanus, and Scarlet Fever

1. Diphtheria C. Diphtheriae
- Nose & throat
- Heart (Myocarditis)
- Peripheral nerves (neuritis)
2. Tetanus Cl. Tetani
- Soil and faecces of herbivores
- Contaminates wounds (deep-puncture)

Tissue necrosis, Microbial growth= reduce oxygen for anaerobe multiplication

- Production of highly potent toxin

- Strychnine-like action
- Affects normal function at the synapses
- Cranial nerves (twitches of eye, lockjaw)
- Cl. Botulinum produces similar toxin
- Contaminate food (meat pastes and pates)
- Death: from respiratory failure

Other organisms that causes Intoxication from growth in foods:

Staphylococci,

Bacillus cereus,

Staph. Aureus

Bacillus cereus actions are delayed and vomitting can follow upto 20 hrs after
ingestion
3. Scarlet Fever Strep. Pyogenes
- erythrogenic skin rash
