Collectors and martial arts enthusi-

my best film. It was a privilege and honour
to work with Jesse, and, he more than sur-
passed my expectations.
Don is not simply your action star, happy
to sit in his trailer between scenes, rather he
takes an active interest in all levels of produc-
tion, a trait he picked up from his mentor, the
legendary Roger Corman. I have co-produced
many of my films. Occasionally, I will also take
a producer credit, but, in all my films, I always
put my mark in some way. When your name
appears above the title, the fans blame or credit
you with the entire film, not just the acting.
Roger Corman advised me to assume more
responsibility beginning with my third film.
When we discuss his own films, Don
admits that the movie making process has
evolved since he started in 1988. Then the
films were predominately about the fight action.
Simple revenge stories, with lots of shirts off
fighting, dominated the genre. Now, Don
believes that martial arts films have evolved,
and, the plots, story, acting performances, as
well as, music and other production values are
on a par with all the other types of film. That
said, his personal favourite amongst his own
films is Ring of Fire 3, Lionstrike, because my
real son played my film characters son. He
was 5 years old and did an excellent job.
On a sadder note, long-time close friend
Chris Penn died not long after working together
with Don and it is a loss that The Dragon still
feels deeply. Chris was my son Jonathans
Godfather, and, he was my best friend. I was
one of the last people to speak to him based on
phone records. We lived together, trained
together, worked, acted, vacationed, partied,
etc. I loved him and suffer on a daily basis
because of his loss. He died while I was shoot-
ing Sentinel, and, the last credit in the film is a
dedication in honour of him.
A movie veteran of twenty years, Don still
has a boyish enthusiasm for the industry and is
always looking to improve - I still have aspira-
tions to continue to improve on the quality of
my films. Bigger budgets, better scripts; it is all
about improving the quality of the product. He
also believes that the martial art film will not die
out, citing the emergence of new stars, such as
Tony Jaa. As to his own legacy, Don, once again,
is modest and philosophical. The most any
actor can hope for is to do their best and make
their own personal mark on the industry.
The legend that is Don Wilson will be at

Shukokai reverse punch is that it has
a shallow depth of field - so accurate

tant. And if a bar stool prevents you

People like Morris and Daniels can

Chun Kuen punch from close range

excellence of it, I dont think it will
work effectively for the lightly built

lighter punches may have quite an
effect but my own experience with
real-life fighting is that its main effect
is to anger the drugged-up opponent,
so he tries even harder to thump you.
Your practical street-corner punch
needs a lot of body mass to make it
effective and this is best done by
injecting movement behind the
Page 62 COMBAT May 2007
punching action. I call this kinetic
mass because it makes use of A hook to the floating ribs
movement to increase an otherwise is a devastating punch
light body mass. What do I mean?
Take up a natural stance with
one foot slightly leading the other
and both hands held hear the face.
Close them into lightly clenched
fists. Slide forwards with your lead
foot and even as you are sliding,
pull back your lead guard hand to
your chin and inject your punching
hip into the action. So the sequence
is (1) move into the target, (2) pull
back your lead guard hand/inject
your punching hip (3) punch. The
other thing Im going to do is
advise you lean in slightly behind
the shoulder action, so upper body
mass is added to the accelerating
fist. Dont lean in too much, of
course, because you dont want to
offer your chin to the opponent!
Dont punch straight either!
Swing your punch in a shallow arc
that can curve around the oppo-
nents lead guard because a curved
ball is more difficult to deal with
than a straight thrust. Another dis-
advantage of a straight thrust is that
it is more difficult to range accu-
rately than a curving punch that
clips the opponents jaw and spins
his head into a knockout. The hook
punch encourages you to close
more with the opponent though
youll need to turn the hips far
more than you would if throwing a
straight thrust. And this can present
retrieval problems if your opening
punch misses. Theres another big
disadvantage of a hook punch
though and that is: its harder to
follow-up (because you always
need a follow up!).
Practise your punches against a
suspended punch bag that weighs
around 200lbs and which is
anchored at the base by means of an
aerolastic (to stop it swinging wild-
ly). Punching a man-mass will
teach you a lot about recoil and the
greater the recoil, remember, the
harder you are hitting! Be sure to
inject kinetic weight into the bag to
stop you from just bouncing off!
Hook upwards into the floating ribs
too. Thats a devastating short-range
punch for when you are almost in
clinch mode. But whatever you do,
dont waste your time marching up
and down punching the empty air
because the opponent is rather more
massive than empty air!

DEVELOPMENT OF POWER
THROUGH CORRECT
By Doctor
Mark Bellamy
MOVEMENT
fter many years of working with elite ath-
A letes across a wide range of sporting dis-
ciplines from speedway to golf, boxing to
squash, Ive had the benefit of closely studying
their training methods and adapting them -
where necessary - to achieve greater results.
And the most consistent conclusion I have been
able to draw is that resistance training must
always be about far more than the development
of strong, powerful muscles. It is about evolving
and repeating high quality, precise movements
with great form while layering power onto the
actions. And this is as true for Martial Arts as
any other pursuit - probably more so!
I developed Powerbags to directly address
this issue. Rigid weights (dumbbells and bar-
bells) and medicine balls have a valuable place
in training but I felt a new kind of weight would
demand much more from the user, allow for a
greater variety of training exercises, could be
adapted for specific physical pursuits and goals
and achieve very definite results. An uncluttered,
hardwearing, sand-filled bag with handle straps
has proven to be the answer.
Powerbags are inherently unstable (unlike
traditional weights) - this demands greater preci-
sion from the user and places the onus on exact
movement. The instability also creates unpre-
dictable movement through certain exercises - an
element that is vital in training the body to main-
tain balance, power and equilibrium whilst having
to adjust and adapt. Think of the way Naseem
Hamed at his peak could explode a punch with
immense power and total precision from the most
extraordinary angles whilst appearing to be almost
off-balance. If we train our bodies to maintain
form even when adapting to balance and position
shifts and to respond with interest - huge strides
in performance can be achieved.
The premise is simple. Learn to move correctly
through all plains, ensure form is consistent then
bring in the power moves and intensity. At the heart
of martial arts performance lie the fundamental
needs for: focus, form, control and execution.
Frantic bursts of speed and explosive exertion count
for nothing more than wasted energy if not applied
correctly. Therefore it is self evident the same must
be true for dedicated and appropriate training meth-
ods. At Performance Technology we focussed on
the end goal and desired performance out-come and

n the early day of my Judo career, if an opponent did not
submit, it was accepted practice to strangle them uncon-
scious. I mentioned in the last article, that during my tuition
of strangles and resuscitation in Japan, we worked in pairs,
first strangling the partner out and then resuscitating him, how-
ever, in our modern climate this practice would be seen as not
acceptable. In fact making a person unconscious can be daunt-
ing and does have a great deal of responsibility attached to it.
The state of unconsciousness from a strangle, in Japanese called
Ochiru, causes the pupils to dilate and in many cases brings
about clonus, a spasm with alternate muscular contractions and
relaxations, that can be disconcerting to the observer, however,
the recipient is often in a euphoric dream state, consciousness
being regained naturally within 20 seconds. Again I reiterate that
these type of techniques are for the qualified exponent, who is
also well versed in resuscitation.
There are two types of approach to the generic term stran-
gulation, the first type of application is referred to as a choke.
The choke is applied to the neck and restricts the air supply to
the lungs, which is a very unpleasant feeling and does not result
in short term unconsciousness. Using a choke presents another
danger, which, if aggressive pressure is used, can cause damage
to the hyoid bone. In contrast to the choke, the strangle affects
the supply of oxygenated blood to the brain, it brings about a
ELI001/03 quick unconsciousness, usually within 15 seconds, and is not an
unpleasant feeling (in contrast to the choke). In reality there are
few applications of technique that do not embrace both of these
concepts, therefore the strangle for example, may be the cause
of unconsciousness, but there may also be a partial choke
applied at the same time.
During my martial arts career I have experienced the stran-

come was the thought of hurting someone else
to prove he could do the business in the cage.
Sensei Gavin helped me by reminding me that I
was a martial artist and that I would be entering
the cage to challenge myself and to test my abili-
ty as a fighter. My opponent might be a martial
artist or he might just be a brawler but both
would be aiming to do me some serious damage.
Either way I should honour and respect him for
allowing me to test my ability, and afterwards
thank him, whether I win or lose.
And so fight day arrived and the nerves start-
ed to kick in. The nearest I could compare what
I felt like at that time, was how I felt the morning
of my wedding day! Half an hour before the
fight, Gavin and Saeed helped Neil stretch out,
warm up and keep calm and focussed. Neil had
brought 160 supporters there that night but
couldnt hear all their cheers and words of
encouragement as his heart was beating too loud.
Then my opponent entered and I thought of call-
ing it off right there and then. He was just as big
as me, 3 inches shorter, but weighing in 2lbs heav-
ier, an enormous man! It was his opponents
debut too and I cant put into words exactly what
happened next. It went so fast - 55 seconds fast in
fact. My preparation and strategy had worked and
in less than a minute of the first round, the referee
stopped the fight and awarded a TKO in my
favour. I was over the moon. I had won. The roar
and chants that came from my supporters and the
rest of the crowd, was deafening - and this time I
could hear it. I felt proud and I had done my
trainers and Sensei proud too. I had entered the
cage and I had won.
