space.

Ask: Who can show me how a [name of animal] moves?

Have one child demonstrate to the group and then rejoin the
group.

Ask the children to move to the other end of the activity

space the way that animal would move.

Animal suggestions:

- Crab palms and heals, belly up

- Fish swim and gulp like a fish
- Shark pretend to halve a big fin and open and close
mouth
- Turtle pretend to swim like a turtle slowly moving fins
- Dolphin leap like a dolphin jumping out of the water
3. Have the students do about 4 or 5 different animals across the gym
before transitioning to the main activity.

Body of Lesson 1. With the students seated in the center of the gym, demonstrate overhand
(9 min.) throwing by going over the cues:
i. Make a T, make an L, tilt, twist, and follow through (to opposite
hip).
ii. Have the students stand up and demonstrate this as well.
2. Explain to the students what they will be doing for the main activity and
demonstrate with one student:
i. Students will be put with a partner and face their partner with 3 giant
steps between them.
ii. They will overhand throw the beanbag to their partner so that they
can catch it without having to take more than one step.
iii. Remind them to make the T and L, tilt, twist, and follow through as
they throw.
iv. If the partner drops the catch, both have to stay where they are.
v. If your partner catches it and they throw back to you and you catch
it, you can both take one step back so you are further apart.

vi. Challenge them to see how far back they can go and still catch the
beanbag.
3. After explaining these instructions, partner off the students and pass out the
beanbags. Ask the students to begin passing. As they pass walk amongst
them and carry out summative assessment of their overhand throwing
recording their names on the assessment sheet on a clipboard.

Closure 1. When we have ran out of time for gym, blow the whistle and get the
(1 min.) students to return the bean bags to the bin. Then ask them to line up
quietly at the door while you put the supplies away.

Sponge Activity N/A

Assessment Observational: As the students carry out their overhand throw of the beanbags
to their partners, carry out formative assessment of their body stance and how
well they can aim for the hula hoop target. Give them positive feedback and
guidance for improvement as is needed. Observe/converse/question with the
students.
Summative - Record the names of students on the checklist based on the degree
to which they are able to use the steps of an overhand throw. Back in the
classroom during snack time, ask the students individually how well they think
they did at following the step for an overhand throw, and record this on the
checklist in a different coloured pen (or use a new sheet).

Specific Learner Some students will need some more time and practice in developing their
Considerations overhand throw stance and in passing to their partner. Be aware of this and give
and Adaptations them some extra encouragement and support as is needed.

Worked well for carrying out assessment.
