Changing Their Skies

1. TANJONG RHU Minfong HO

Summary
Tanjong Rhu is a story about the relationship between Mr.T.W. Li , is
a rich buissnessman in the shipping buissness and his mother, Ah Ma.
Mr.Li's office is Shenton Way is a modern as he is. His mother
however, isa a traditional with strong religion beliefs and pratices
ancestor worship. Ah Ma and Mr. Li have a close relationship. The day
after Ah Ma's funeral, Mr. Li recalls the day he brought his mother
a pair of binocular.

Mr. Li's excitement was dashed when his mother didn't use it
the way he want to. Mr. Li wants her to have a better vision,but Ah
Ma can only see Tanjong Rhu of the past through the binocular.
Indirectly, Ah Ma is trying to make Mr.Li remember who he was
before he became a serius buissnessman. Mr.Li cannot rememeber all
the details of his childhood and when he tried to ask Ah Ma, she had
already becam too sick to talk to him.

The story ends with Mr.Li trying to fulfill Ah Ma's wish of


getting the key to the drawer that keep her important thingsfor the
altar. In the process of looking for the key, Mr.Li suddenly could see
Tanjong Rhu.

PLOT
EXPOSITION

It was evening but Mr Li was still in his office.


He was concerned about something he had left
undone. The binoculars on the table brought back
memories of his mother who had just passed
away

RISING ACTION
The binoculars were for his mother to help her
with her sight. When told that theywere see-far
glassed, Ah Ma albeit reluctantly accepted them.
However, she wanted to use them to see Tanjong
Rhu, their old place of work and home

CLIMAX

The following morning, after praying and talking


to her late husband at the altar, she talked
nostalgically of seeing Mr Li and the past very
well.

FALLING ACTION
Back in the offince, Mr Li remembered what he
had to do to fulfil Ah Mas talk about her keys.
He went home but could not find the keys in the
drawer

RESOLUTION
Mr Li tried but could not recollect his past well.
When he wanted to ask Ah Ma for detail, she was
too sick to talk to him. She fretted about her
keys to the altar and then she passed away

Conflict
In the moning, after praying and talking to her late husband at the
altar, she followed Mr Li to his office. She concentrated to see-far
glasses on the distance to see Tanjong Rhu while Mr Li wanted her to
see the shps and the harbour. Then, she talked nostagically of seeing
Mr Li and the past very well without the glasses but with her minds
eye.

Theme
Family Relationship

Ah Ma was a mother of nine children, grandmother of thirty-


four and great-grandmother of seventeen. She was fixed at
the centre as the matriarch and a stabilising influence. She
stayed in her eldest sons house and was close to her
granddaughter, Ying

Ancestor Worship

Ah Ma prayed at the altar to her late husbands tablet and


photograph. She bowed infront of the altar holding the joss
sticks and spoke aloud her thoughts to him. She told him about
going to their sons office from where she hoped to see
Tanjong Rhu and Mr Li senior.

Moral Values
Although we live in a modern world, we must not forget our
traditional values
We must to appreciate people while we can
Money cannot buy anything
Learn to respect and tolerate each other
