If you can partner with a colleague in order to present a workshop or webinar to their
audience, its a complete win-win. They get great, free content from an expert -- and

The key is to find a JV partner with an audience that overlaps yours. You dont want
to present a workshop on, say, cooking with bacon to an audience of vegans. Theyre
not going to be really receptive to your message, so look for a synergistic group.

Plus, Grant made it easy for me to step in and be a part of the webinar, so there was
very little stress on me to prepare beforehand.
Dorie Clark, a marketing strategy consultant and author of the book Stand Out, says
running free webinars for others as one of her most effective ways of getting email list
subscribers.
I conducted dozens of webinars in 2015, she says, for some, the company shared
the list of attendees with me outright, and I was able to email them my opt-in offer
directly. One webinar actually brought me 3,000 new subscribers!
YOUR TURN:
1. If you dont already have a webinar or workshop you present to potential clients/
customers, pick a topic that provides value AND leads into your paid program or
services.
2. Make a list of 10-20 contacts with an audience overlap.
3. Reach out to the first five on the list to see if theyre interested in a partnership.
A lead magnet swap is just what it sounds like -- trading lead magnets with someone
in a similar space. You email your list about their free offer, and they do the same for
you. Its a really simple way to not only get exposed to a new audience, but also to
provide YOUR email list valuable content.
This method can be a great, low-investment way to test a new lead magnet, or to
test the waters for a larger joint venture with a prospective partner. You can see how
responsive people are to the lead magnet swap before investing more time in a
larger joint project.
1. Make a list of 5-10 potential swap partners (make sure its a great synergy and that
your potential partners complement what you do)
2. Designate a potential lead magnet for each.
3. Start reaching out and swapping!
If youve got a paid, launch-based course, providing a free e-course as a lead magnet
is the perfect way to pull eyeballs and impress readers with epic content.
Plus, because theyre signing up for a multi-part course, you usually attract higher-
quality subscribers willing to take action and invest time meaning theyll be more
profitable down the line.
My friend (and List Building School expert) Tom Morkes, who helps online
entrepreneurs create five-figure and six-figure products, says these free courses are
the number one way he gets new subscribers to sign up for his list.
They work so well, hes developed two of them: One on pay what you want sales, and
another on selling your first 10,000 books as an author. Once created, both continue
to pull in new subscribers and give people a taste of his style, quality, and expertise.
I offer free mini courses via Facebook ads, she says. Grew my list in November and
December by 3,000 and only spent around $1,500 in ads for those 3,000 high quality
leads. Its a real winner!
YOUR TURN:
1. Sign up for several free email courses or mini-courses to see how theyre
structured.
2. If you currently have a paid course, what information or skill set would a customer
need to have before theyd be prepared to successfully undertake your paid
course?
3. Lay out a 3-9-part free course to teach that information or skill (or you can even do
a one part, epic live workshop or mini course if youd rather prefer that).
Its almost written into our DNA that if we see a quiz or survey, we HAVE to fill it out!
Womens magazines have known this secret for years, and sites like BuzzFeed have
jumped on the bandwagon.
Ryan is one of the most well-known marketers online today, and he has popularized
the use of surveys and quizzes to segment your market and serve targeted offers to
them through his book, Ask: The Counterintuitive Online Method to Discover Exactly
What Your Customers Want to Buy...Create a Mass of Raving Fans...and Take Any
Business to the Next Level.
This strategy has earned him and his clients over 9 figures online!
Heres an example of Ryans opt-in form (hes obviously using his proven Ask Method,
and in this case, what he calls a micro commitment survey). Not only is it compelling
(who can resist clicking on the appropriate bubble?!), it also tells Ryan exactly what to
send you next:
This is such a powerful concept that my team and I are hard at work to implement

YOUR TURN:
1. Can you divide your avatars into 3-5 distinct groups based on objections,
psychographics, needs, or experience levels?
2. What one question could you ask to divide people into those broad groups?
3. Design an email series for each of your groups, leading them through a custom
sales funnel.
#6 Use Pinterest
You might think Pinterest is the realm of recipe-collectors and third-grade teachers,
but dont be so quick to write it off!
As List Building School expert Melyssa Griffin will tell you, Pinterest can be a source of
valuable traffic for ANY online business owner. She says, Pinterest is one of the most
underutilized, yet effective marketing platforms out there right now. And not enough
people are using it to grow their blog or business.
Melyssa credits Pinterest with growing her list from 2,000 subscribers to 40,000
subscribers in just 12 months. Now, after 16 months, Im at 70,000 peeps, she adds.
YOUR TURN:
The green smoothie challenge. Whole30. NaNoWriMo. The Ice Bucket Challenge.
It seems like theres a challenge for everything these days which means its
something to keep an eye on because it must be working as a way to grow business!
Everyone loves a good challenge, and when you add in the benefit of a ready-made
accountability group, youve got a recipe for marketing success.
LBS panelist Jenn Scalia says that social challenges have been her single most
effective way to grow her email list. Ive done over a dozen challenges over the
past two years and have grown my list by thousands with just this method without
spending a dime on advertising, she says.
Jenn says, Ive sold out group programs, and filled my 1:1 practice by hosting super
engaging social challenges.
YOUR TURN:
1. Sign up for several free challenges to see how other business owners are running
them (LBS experts Jenn Scalia, Zach Spuckler, and Kimra Luna all have run
successful challenges to grow their email lists AND their profits.)
2. Find out what your audience wants and what will engage them BEFORE you put a
ton of effort into designing a challenge no one wants to participate in.
3. Brainstorm SHORT challenges that will give your target audience a taste of your
expertise and also provide a concrete achievement if the participant completes
#8 Reverse Giveaways
Within six months of starting MarketDoc, List Building School expert Cody Lister grew
his list from 0 to 20,000 subscribers and reverse giveaways played a huge part in
helping them do it.
A reverse giveaway is where you piggyback off the success of other wildly
successful giveaways that happen before yours. Basically, you find a successful
giveaway in your niche, track down those who participated (usually they have to share
via social media with an associated hashtag, or with a particular URL, so its easy to
find out who they are).
Then you create a new giveaway and reach out to the people who participated in the
first giveaway. You already know theyre interested in giveaways in that niche, so its
just a matter of reaching out and letting them know youre running something similar.
Heres Bryan Harris talking about his list growth via a marketing giveaway on his blog.
A content upgrade is an added piece of content that provides value to your audience.
The catch is that they must opt-in to your email list to receive this valuable piece of
content.
A simple example: For a podcast, you could provide a transcript of each episode, but
in order to receive the transcript, the listener must opt-in to your email list. Then they
receive the content, and you grow your list!
Wondering if this can build your list? LBS speaker Sarah Morgan got 7,000 opt-ins
from just ONE content upgrade!
Heres the blog post Sarah added a content upgrade to. As you see from the
screenshot below, this post currently has almost 80,000 social shares!
As you can see below, Sarahs thank you page, encourages you to share the post on
social media, so shell get even more traffic from that without putting in any extra work
(just a few minutes to set up the thank you page with LeadPages).
Syed says content upgrades work so well because they use a psychological principle
known as the Zeigarnik Effect, which basically means that the teaser for the additional
content related to the topic at hand creates an open loop in the readers mind, which
they can close by opting in. In other words, people get FOMO and cant stand NOT
to have more content on the topic!
YOUR TURN:
1. Check out Sarah Morgans List Building School training session on September 19,

2. Review your analytics to determine your 10 most popular blog posts.
3. Determine an appropriate content upgrade for each one.
4. Create the content upgrade, then put it behind an opt-in firewall like OptinMonster.
You might be wondering why youd want to launch a course before you build your
email list, but you have to remember that list building is a never-ending cycle. Each
product you release will (ideally) help build your list, and each time you build your list,
you are increasing sales for potential courses, products, and services at a later date.
To that end, creating a noteworthy course launch can be an excellent way to build
buzz, reach new leads, and ultimately build your list.
Below youll see some stats from one of my VSM launches, and I grew my list by
several 1,000 email subscribers within a short time period.
When done correctly, your content spreads virally as interested viewers like, share,
and comment on your video or other pre-launch content. It helps sell your offer, yes
-- but it also helps build your email list!
YOUR TURN:
Dont make list building harder than it has to be! Always start with the low-hanging
fruit, and when it comes to list building, that means reaching out to your nearest and
dearest to get a jumpstart on your efforts.
The average person has almost 350 Facebook friends, and chances are your list is a
lot larger because youre in the Internet space. Have you invited each and every one
of those contacts to sign up for your email list?
And once they sign up, have you asked them to share it with others?
Bryan Harris of VideoFruit calls these people the eager sneezers probably because
they catch on to what youre doing, then turn around and sneeze the good news
onto others.
And the best part? Within 48 hours, Joel referred 22 other people to Bryans new
email list.
Thats a great return -- and a strategy with a personal touch which almost always
means higher quality subscribers.
YOUR TURN:
1. Create personal invites to each and every family member, your former college
roommate, your third grade teacher ask them if theyd like to be added to your
email list.
2. For those who respond positively, ask them if they would spread the word and/or
do they know anyone who might be interested.
3. Make it easy for eager sneezers to spread the word with shortened links, pre-
written emails, etc.
If someone goes through the trouble to click on a link or type in a URL, theyre
obviously interested so dont let a bad link cause them to flee.
Instead, turn it into a chance to wow them. A custom 404 page (super easy to design
in a program like LeadPages and to install on your WordPress site) will give you
another chance to capture their contact info.
A page like this takes just minutes to set up -- and can pay off BIG.
YOUR TURN:
1. Write a compelling call to action (such as an irresistible lead magnet) for your 404
page.
2. Design a simple custom 404 page with an opt-in using LeadPages or ClickFunnels
(or create a custom design as Ive done in the example above for my WordPress
site) and install on your site.
According to GetResponse, emails with social sharing icons get a 158% higher click-
through rate than emails that dont.
YOUR TURN:
1. Check with your email provider to see if you can add a social share link to the
bottom of your emails (most of the major email providers offer this).
2. Enable social sharing.
3. Track your results!
List segmenting is all about grouping people based on their needs, interests, and
demographics. (We talked a bit about this in #4, Quizzes and Surveys.)
The theory is that by segmenting your list, you can provide a more customized
experience to each lead, rather than throwing them all in one big bucket and hoping
for the best.
You can begin segmenting your list from the very beginning, by providing lead
magnets and landing pages customized for the 3-5 major customer avatars youve
identified based on demographics and psychographics.
A simple example: If you sell health supplements, you could have one landing page
with an image of a fit older couple, one with a fit woman in her 30s holding a child,
and one with a fit man in his 30s at a CrossFit gym. Each page would be tailored for
the appropriate audience -- language, graphics, and lead magnets would all vary
based on intended audience.
Not only will you get more leads, youll also see fewer unsubscribes because youre
giving them information tailored to THEIR needs.
Heres an example from Pat Flynns welcome email. Notice that he segments his
email list right from the very beginning by asking a very simple question, and getting
people to take a micro-commitmentS by clicking the answer that best describes
them.
Ever since I started taking segmenting of my email list more seriously, I was not only
able to build a more engaged email list (with up to 40% open rates and over 10% click
rate), but Im also making significantly more revenue in my business.
YOUR TURN:
1. Identify your 3-5 major customer avatars and buckets where theyll fall into.
2. Consider what would be most effective to segment your list -- landing pages,
surveys, etc.
3. Create a compelling lead magnet for each or use a micro-commitment survey to
have a different email sequence depending on which bucket select in the initial
survey before opting in to your email list.
4. Design a landing page with appropriate language, graphics, etc.
With this strategy, you reach out to people who have indicated their interest in a
specific topic on another blog.
You let them know that you have added perspective to contribute to the topic,
and that they might be interested in checking out your content (and, ultimately,
subscribing to your email list!).
The idea behind reaching out to potential commenters ahead of time is to make sure
your content launches with a bang, and that you start to manually build up your fan
list from people you know are interested in your topic area.
By connecting with the fans of similar blogs in your niche, he explains, you fast track
your path to getting 1,000 true fans. Connect with 1,000 true fans by borrowing the
spotlight from the top blogs in your niche.
First, he says, look for for blog posts about topics related to yours. Compile a list of
ones with at least 10 or 20 comments.
Create a list of commenters (there are tools to help you do this, though you can get
quite a bit of information manually), and email them with a link to the post when it
publishes.
And, for the sake of list building, embed content upgrades like the one above like
crazy throughout the post.
This way you build a fanbase with meaningful, one-on-one contact, and you get more
targeted, interested leads on your email list.
Popups bring up strong feelings in marketers, as many feel they are annoying and
intrusive. But heres the hard truth: They work! And if done correctly, you can minimize
the intrusiveness while maximizing effectiveness.
Expert marketer Neil Patel has implemented a very successful pop-up that appears
only when its clear a visitor to his website is intending to leave without opting in.
Called an exit intent pop-up, the shaded box appears across the screen with a very
clear call-to-action -- get the cheat sheet I used to rank #1 for Online Marketing.
In most cases, this kind of exit pop-up just shows up in the middle of the screen,
obscuring the webpage.
YOUR TURN:
1. Check your current opt-in box software or platform to see if you can enable an
exit-intent pop-up.
2. Design a pop-up with a cant-say-no offer.
3. Enable it on your homepage as a test and see what happens.
We mentioned creating lead magnets and opt-in pages based on your avatar
categories. Now, lets talk about creating opt-in pages based on traffic sources.
While their survey didnt get into a lot of the reasons behind that jump, my gut says
that having a specific landing page for a specific traffic source makes a big difference.
Then create a landing page that only people who come to your site via your YouTube
channel see.
Then create one landing page per ad to increase the relevance of the readers
experience.
Do you appear on a lot of other high-profile websites with guest posts or as a podcast
guest?
You guessed it create a custom landing page tailored to the audience of each of
those appearances and the information you share there.
The idea is to create a seamless experience for new visitors to your site, building trust,
and boosting your signup rates. I even created a special welcome sequence for Fire
Nation who opted in from the special landing page.
YOUR TURN:
As any marketer or salesperson knows, the lead typically doesnt turn into a customer
on the first ask.
The same goes for visitors to your website -- one ask just isnt enough.
Im not talking about being annoying and spamming people with a new popup full of
exclamation marks every five seconds, but I am talking about making sure youve got
plenty of obviously visible calls to action (CTAs) throughout your entire website.
This way, no one whos potentially interested in your offer falls through the cracks.
LBS expert Steve Chou, the guy who shares the inside story on entrepreneurship on
My Wife Quit Her Job, suggests blending your calls to action in with your content.
Most people try to make their signup forms stand out by placing a border around
the form or making it a different color, he says. But often times, this can have the
opposite effect. If you blend in the signup form with your content, people will think the
form is part of the post which will increase your signups dramatically.
So as you can see, its not about just creating a lead magnet, making a page for it, and
occasionally driving traffic there. Its about deliberately making theres always an offer
in front of your visitors.
LBS panelist Andreea Ayers, the successful entrepreneur behind the launch and sale
of three companies in the last five years and who now runs two other companies
swears by this technique.
Install optin boxes in multiple places on your website, she advises, top header,
footer, sidebar, bottom of blog posts, within posts, on your About page, and as a
lightbox popup.
The more opportunities you give your readers to opt in, she reasons, the more likely
they are to do so.
Here she uses a Welcome Mat/Welcome Gate to make sure her offer is the only thing
thats seen even if its just for a split second.
YOUR TURN:

main offer and main landing page.
2. Test ONE element at a time to determine whats most effective.

Youve probably already read the advice about making an offer on thank you pages to
increase your revenue per customer.

subscriber list, you can use this opportunity to grow your list even more by having
your subscribers share your initial offer with their social networks.
1. Identify places in your funnel where you can implement a thank you page.

If you havent noticed these things creeping up all over the internet youve been
under a rock!
When the concept rolled out, we all thought of it as a sort of popup, but its proven
itself to be much more than that.
Some even claim theyve seen these types of opt-in plugins outperform traditional
popups by 20 times. Which is a big deal for anyone trying to build a large list.
The idea is to get and hold a visitors attention on your offeringand nothing but your
offeringthe instant they land on your site.
They can choose to ignore it by scrolling or clicking out of it, but getting the attention
of new and returning visitors increases your ROI for your traffic by consistently
converting more visitors into subscribers.
And some of the biggest names in the online business world swear by these tools as
one of their top three list building methods, including: John Lee Dumas, Sujan Patel,
Sarah Morgan, and many more.
A user will only get served the Welcome Gate (a full landing page giving them the
opportunity to opt in before they go to our site) if theyve never visited our site before,
or if its been 30 days since theyve visited our site.
The fact that these plugins let you add settings to control who sees them, who
doesnt, and how often ensures you dont annoy regular visitors with the same offer
over and over again which is important for maintaining loyalty.
But if JLD can display it so little and get almost double conversions? I think its worth a
shot on your site. For sure.

which has drastically increased his conversion rates.
But hes also noticed that you cant just slap the plugin on your site, insert some text,
and hope for the best.
Timing is very key to full screen opt-ins, he advises. I only trigger them once a user
has scrolled to the end of my post so I dont annoy my readers.

traffic.

The downside of SEO is that it takes a lot of work and there are a lot of factors
outside of your control, he goes on to say. Like changes in Googles ranking formula.
It also takes time for your website to rank well.
The best recommendation I have for you on SEO is to write stuff people care about.
People will click on the posts they care about, link to those posts, and your rankings
will improve, he says. Simple as that.

know this information and have clicked on it by almost immediately presenting them
with an opportunity to download the content upgrade for the post.

5. Promote your content by reaching out to influencers you linked to in your post,
and you can also use a tool like Buzzsumo to identify targeted people who shared
similar content before.
