VI. Field Procedures

Borrow all the instruments needed for topographic survey fieldwork.

Organize all the borrowed items: check if the no. of the items is the same in your borrowers
form, check if the battery of Total Station is included in the case, test if it is working, and bring
all items necessary to the field mapping location.
Go to the designated area and identify baseline appropriate for data collection.
Begin setting up the tripod with height suitable for observation when the total station is placed on
top of the tripod.
With the tripod in place, carefully place the total station on the tripod head. Attach the total
station to the tripod head loosely by turning the mounting screw clockwise, look through the
eyepiece on the black optical plummet two-in-one knob located on the front side of the total
station if the total station is centered over the control point.
Level the instrument by adjusting the tripod legs by extending/contracting them, to position the
bubble of the circular vial, then begin adjusting by turning the two leveling screws in opposite
directions until the bubble on the plate vial moves to the center of the glass level.
Turn on the total station by pressing the red power supply switch. And create a new job for this
fieldwork.
Create a new job.
Press [MENU] to open the MENU screen.
Press [1] to open the Job Manager.
Press the Create softkey to open the Create Job screen.
Enter the job name.
Press the Set softkey to check the job settings.
Press [ENT] in the last field of the Job Sett screen to create the new job
Input coordinates of both control points and HI.
From a known point, set up station and perform backsight to orient the instrument.
Set up station.
Press [1] or select Known in the Stn Setup menu.
Enter a point name or number in the ST field. Enter the coordinates for the point. Press
[ENT] after each field.
Enter the instrument height in the HI field and then press [ENT].

Backsight the other point.

Press [1] or select Coord in the Backsight screen.
Enter the point name.
Enter the coordinates.
Sight the BS on Face-1 (F1). Press [ENT] to complete the setup.
Press [DSP] to display a QA screen. The QA screen shows the dHD and
dVD values, which indicate the difference between the measured
distance and the distance calculated from the known coordinates.
Foresight the next points then record the coordinates of each point.
Foresight a new point.
To take a distance measurement, press [MSR1] or [MSR2] in the Basic
Measurement Screen (BMS).
Enter point name
Enter HT
Sight target.
Press [MSR1] or [MSR2]
Input a code for each physical features (trees=3S, bench=BCH, lamp
post=LP, etc.,)
Proceed to another known point and repeat steps 8 and 9. Record a minimum
of 300 points.
For physical features like trees, measure the circumference of its body and
compute for its diameter. For the side walk, measure its width. Record the
following measurements, these measurements are needed for generating the
topo map.
Since the contour interval is 0.35, make sure that the ground points on the
sloped area are at most 1m apart. For the ground points on flat areas, ensure
that they are 1m to 2m apart.
Make a record of all points observed on each fieldwork day.
