For the background, it is found that the cervical cancer incidence rate in
Indonesia is still fairly high, around 22.3%. Most cases of cervical cancer (60-
80%) was detected at an advanced stage though this cancer can be detected early.
One of the early detection is by doing a Pap Smear test. The objective of this
study was to assess the students level of knowledge about the awareness of Pap
Smear as an early detection for cancer cervix.
The method used in this study was analytical descriptive with cross-
sectional design. Population studies were female students from batch 2008
studying in Fakultas Sastra USU. The minimum sample size should be achieved is
66 people. Sampling is done by non-probability sampling technique, ie by
consecutive sampling techique.
Result obtained from 66 respondents , about 36 of them knew about Pap
Smear where else the remaining 30 of them doesnt know about Pap Smear.
Grouping of respondents knowledge level showed that 3 % of them has a good
knowledge about Pap Smear, 34.8% of them has enough knowledge about Pap
Smear and 62. 1% of them has a lack of knowledge about Pap Smear.
The conclusion of this study was, It is found that the average popultation
of students hasa lack of knowledge in Pap Smear.
