Investigations in Science 7 March 31, 2017

I will be out of the building on Wednesday-Friday of this week on the Bay

Trip with 23 Farquhar students. I will have limited access to email (if at all). I will
get back to any emails when I return from the trip. I wanted to make sure a
weekly newsletter got out but I apologize if it changes some while I am out.

What we did this week:

Monday, we began looking at mutations by trying to determine factual

statements vs. fictional statements about mutations. Mutations are changes to
genes that can result in changes to proteins, which can affect the structures and
functions of the organism and thereby change traits. Some changes are beneficial,
others harmful, and some neutral to the organism.

Tuesday we completed an assessment on Punnett Squares and genetics.

Wednesday we will be completing a summative. Students will think of one

specific trait and use what they know about their parents traits, to create a
possible Punnett square. If students wanted a fictional character, that was
offered to them as well. They will use their own traits along with their parents to
predict the genotypes of everyone.

Thursday and Friday of this week, we will complete a reading by annotating

and taking notes on an article. We also will have some interactives to complete on
mutations.

The end of quarter 3 is Thursday, April 6. My gradebook will close on

Monday, April 3rd due to me being out of the building on Tuesday, April 4th. Please
have your child take care of assignments that are marked as Zs before the end of
the quarter.
