Incas
The incas were located in the large portion of south America. Mostly on the Andean
Mountains. This area contains current day Peru, large parts of Ecuador, western and southern
central Bolivia, northwest Argentina, north and south central Chile, and into southern Columbia.
They refer to their empire as Tawantinsuyu (The four regions or the four united provinces). The
incas were ruled by emperors. They were called the Inca, The Supreme Leader, or the Sapa Inca.
The emperor was chosen due to if the previous emperor had children. If he did the eldest son
would become the next emperor. If not another close relative would take over. It was considered
a large empire because it only consisted of one large portion.
Their religious beliefs varied but mostly polytheistic. Most of the religions consisted of
common traits, They mostly all believed in a existence of a Pachamama and viracocha. The
Incan deities lived in three different realms. Hanan Pacha, the celestial realm in the sky, Uku
Pacha, the inner earth, and the Cay Pacha, the outer earth where the humans live. Hanan Pacha
most important deities are the Inti, the sun god, and Mama Quilla, the moon goddess. Inti Raymi
was the festival of the Inti, which is the Incas most important festival. Uku Pacha was the main
home of Pachamama, the Earth mother, and Kanopa, the God of pregnancy. The main God of the
Incan religion was the Con-Tiu Viracocha Pachayachachic. It was the first God and the creator of
all three realms and their inhabitants. He was also the father of the Inti. They worshiped natural
items because they believed that the gods were in things such as mountain, lakes, and other
things such as that. They also has sacrifices to please the gods. They also believed in
reincarnation so they also specifically worshiped the earth and sun God that were said to be in
the capital, Cuzco.
The Incas created the calendar that had 12 months and 30 days in each month. Each
month has its own festival and in the month of November the last 5 days were a feast to prepare
for the New Year which was on December first. December also held the biggest festival of all the
months. The incas language was based off of nature. The incas architecture was buildings that
had usually one room and was a rectangle made out off some type of stone such as yukay,
limestone, green sacsayhuaman diorite porphyry, or black andesite, and usually had one to two
stories and sometimes three.
The Incan people mostly worked for farms. Other than that the people mostly were
warriors, herders, fishermen, craftsmen, weavers, sorcerers, part of the government, or chosen
women. The incas mostly traded between themselves. Most of the time they would trade with the
capital, Cuzco,so the capital would have gold and silver. The Inca people were divided into
allyus, which were clans of families that lived and worked together. This affected the way they
lived by making everyone slightly different from clan to clan. One clan might worship their
religion differently from another and their language might have a few errors from the proper way
to speak the language. In all the system worked well even though the few flaws that it had.
People were able to produce for themselves and others while being able to send recourses to the
capital of Cuzco.
Some things about the Incan civilization is they mined a bunch because they had so many
types of precious metals. Even though they had so many priceless metals they did not value them
as much as they valued fine cloth. One more interesting thing about the incas is that many
believe that the length of their hair determined their class in society. In all the incan society had
many things that made them unique and different than any other civilization.
