Project Title: ____Books to Babies________________________________________________

Describe the program or project.

Parents are their babies first teachers. Our project will help educate parents about the

importance of reading and provide them with tools to begin their journey. Reading is

fundamental to academic success and therefore my students and I would like to provide the

parents of newborn babies with books. The books will be delivered to 100 new parents at the

hospital post-delivery. We would like to include 1 bilingual childrens book, brochures with

research about the importance of reading, and a reply card.

Discuss the anticipated results (outputs and/or outcomes) for the request.

We anticipate that once we start the program more parents will read to their children and value

reading. Through this program we will be equipping children with the tools they need to become

successful students. A student not reading at his or her grade level by the end of the third grade

is four times less likely to graduate high school on timesix times less likely for students from
low-income families ( Reading Partners 2017). Furthermore, reading determines socioeconomic

status. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a division of the U.S.

Department of Education, children who are read to at home enjoy a substantial advantage over

children who are not read to at home. It is for these reasons and more that this is an important

issue. Through our project, we hope to have parents anticipate this program so that it can

become a part of the culture. As the program grows, we hope to expand and be able to provide

books for all new parents.

This will also provide an opportunity for my students to give back to the community. The

students can see the benefits of reading and realize the impact it has on society. Moreover, when

and if they become parents, they will continue to promote reading and the cycle will continue.

Indicate what process and/or impact information will be collected to measure and
demonstrate success.
We will also include a reply card and survey card in the literacy packet. Parents can provide

follow up information to learn more about free reading programs and their local library.

Furthermore, we will have a survey where they can comment on the effectiveness of the program

for their families. The reply card will include contact information so that the parents can share

pictures and testimonials which we will share via our Meadowcreek Media Center website,

Facebook, and Twitter pages.
