SCENE 1 Nicest Kids - Tracys house / Tv studio

(Camino a la casa de Tracy)

Tracy: Hurry, Penny, hurry the shows already started! Were gonna miss it!
Penny: Im hurrying Tracy, but my mother says Im not allowed to perspire!
Tracy: Cmon!

(En la casa de Tracy)

Prudy: Edna is my laundry ready?
Edna: Who wants to know? Sure it is hon. Come on up. Thatll be three dollars.
Prudy: (Digging in her purse) Thats pretty for a few pair of pettipants.
(Tracy and Penny enter)
Tracy: Im home!
Edna: Four oclock. Guess I dont need to ask who got detention again. Tracy Turnblad, mind your
manners and say hello to our guest.
Tracy: Hello Mrs. Pingleton
Edna: And you Penny?
Penny: Hello, Mrs Pingleton. I mean, mother.
Edna: (To Prudy) Teenagers. They just love watching that Josie Collins.
Prudy: Delinquents. It aint right dancing to that colored music.
Edna: Dont be silly, it aint colored. The TVs in black and white.

(Estudio de Televisin. Termina la cancin)

Josie: And that was our new dance of the week the Stricken Chicken. Well be right back.

(Cambian las luces)

Velma: And we are off! All right Link, how many times do I have to tell you? Stop hogging1 the camera:
Youre not Elvis yet. Amber Hog the camera.
Amber: Yes, mother.
Velma: And you Miss Collins. None of that Negro sound today!
Josie: Velma, the kids love rhythm and blues.
Velma: Theyre kids, Josie. Thats why we have to steer2 them in the white direction. I mean you know
what I mean.

Link: Amber, Ive got something for you. (He offers her a ring). Since weve been going together sort
of steady maybe we should make it official.
Amber: Oh, Link. Your Council member ring. How sweet. And it matches my hair colour exactly! (They
hug)
Velma: Ah, ah, ah! None of that! Save your personal lives for the camera! And were back in 543

(Cambio de luces)

Josie: Now, dont forget, guys and gadgets, our special show is coming up on June 5th. Also, live on the

Amber: My big break! I want to be your Miss Teenage Hairspray. Remember a vote for me from you is a

Josie: What an unexpected thing to say, Amber. And speaking of expecting the unexpected, our own
Brenda will be taking a leave of absence from the show. So, it seems well have an opening for a girl.
Wanna be one of the nicest kids in town? Cut school tomorrow and come to the audition!

(Luz a la casa de Tracy)

Tracy: Oh my God! Its the dream of a lifetime. I have to go audition.
Penny: Oh my God! Its the dream of a lifetime. I have to go watch you audition.
Edna: (snapping off the TV) Thatll be enough of that for one day.

Penny: Yes, mother. See you Trace!
Tracy: Bye Penny. Bye Mrs Pingleton
(Penny and Prudy exit)

Edna: Young lady, no one is auditioning for anything. Therell be no cutting school in this house.
Tracy: But, Mama I want to be famous.
Edna: You want to be famous? Girls like you, people like us; you know what Im saying. They dont put
people like us on TV- except to be laughed at. You think I wanted to spend my life washing and ironing
other peoples clothing? No, I wanted to design them. Well, you deal with what life gives you. Now start
folding.

(Luces a Penny y Prudy)

Penny: But mom, all I was doing was watching Josie Collins over at Tracys.
Prudy: Didnt I forbid you from listening to race music? Oh if the police ever located your father hell
punish you good.

(Luces a Amber y Velma)

Velma: Your dancing was atrocious today, Amber. Im willing to lie, cheat, and steal to win you that Miss
Hairspray crown, but youve got to work with me.

(Luces a Tracy)
Edna: Stop! Thats no way to treat clean clothes. One day youll own Ednas Occidental Laundry. Will

Tracy: I came to audition for Josie. My name is Tracy Turnblad. And, like you, I go to Patterson Park

Tracy: I sure would. Im all for integration. Its the new frontier!
Velma: No in Baltimore it isnt.
Tracy: Um, wheres Josie? Id love to dance for her

Tracy: Uh, thank you?
Penny: I could tell they secretly liked you.
Tracy: (to herself) Why do they have to be so mean? Youre short, youre stout, youre not Council

(she sprays her hair with hairspray) Will they give me a chance? Encouragement? Appreciation? No, all I

SCENE 3 Detention - School

(Cambio de luces. Tracy se acuerda...)

Principal: Tracy Turnblad, once again your monumental hair has seriously obstructed everyones view of
the blackboard. As Principal of Patterson Park High I condemn you to three more days of detention!
(Lights up on Tracy in detention. Around her are Seaweed and his friends. One of them is asleep and
another one is writing repeatedly I will not talk in speech class in the blackboard)
4
Tracy 2: Detention! Is there no pity for a teen just trying to fit in?
Seaweed: Maybe you dont have to try so hard?
Tracy 2: Excuse me. You get detention just about every time I do, and Ive never seen you complain.
Seaweed: Oh, but I do. This is my way of complaining. (He turns on a small radio. Music starts and he
does a soulful little dance) Its how I use my blues.
Tracy 2: Hey, that moves swift
Judine: The man can keep us on a diet of detention so long as he doesnt starve us of our tunes
(Seaweed does another step)
Seaweed: Heres a little something-something signified to say, Hello, my names Seaweed Stubbs.
Whats yours?
Tracy 2: Thats unbelievable. Can I do that?
Seaweed: I dont know, can you? (Tracy and Seaweed dance together)
Tracy 2: Hello, my name is Tracy Turnblad.
Kamilah: Not bad for a white girl
Shyna: Aint no black and white in here. Detention is a rainbow experience. (Seaweed does another step)
Tracy 2: Whats that step?
Seaweed: Oh this? I call this one Peyton Place after midnight. I use it to attract the opposite sex. (Tracy
jumps in with him). Fearless, girl. You really got it going on. If they saw you dancing like this, theyd put
you on a TV show!

Tracy: (to herself) Thats it! I have to show Josie what I can do!... (to the others) Wheres Josie? I want to
show her my stuff.
Velma: I told you, Im the producer
Tracy: But I want to see her, she will give me an opportunity.
Amber: Whats going on?
Velma: Nothing, just another looser..
Tracy: I am not!
Shelley: Maybe youd better go home and do your homework (Tracy tries to speak and the council
members start talking louder without listening to her. Noise. Tracys upset. Corny enters)
NK: Youll never be like us!!
Josie: Whats this mess all about?
Velma: Nothing, just one of the candidates..
Josie: Girls!! Dont be cruel!! (Josie sees Tracy) Hey, honey, are you alright? Whats your name?
Tracy: (as she does the my name is step) My name is Tracy Turnblad

Penny: I think Ive seen her here before. And shes going to be a regular.

Penny: Hi, Tracy. Its me, Penny!
Edna: She cant hear you.

Josie: Tell us about yourself Tracy!
Tracy: Well, I go to Patterson Park High School, I watch your show and I do absolutely nothing else!

Josie: And if you were President, what would your first official act be?
Tracy: Well, Ill make every day Negro Day!
Velma: Aaaiii!
Josie: Wow! What do you say kids? Looks like we might just have a new candidate for Miss Teenage

Amber: (grabbing the mic) No, she cant be Miss Hairspray! Shes the Before in the diet ad and I am the
after, and afters always win!
Josie: Amber, what a comedian! So, Tracy, tell us true, how would you like Link Larkin to sing a song just
for you?
Amber: (grabbing the microphone) No! He cant because everyone knows that whenever he sings, hes
singing to me. Hes completely involved with me, see?
Josie: Right, so Tracy, tell us true, how would you like Link Larkin to sing a song just for you?
Tracy: Would I? Would I
Amber: (grabbing the microphone) You people are ignoring the laws of nature!
Josie: Link Larkin, our own budding Elvis, will now sing to the equally blooming Tracy Turnblad his
version of this weeks Top 40 hit, It takes Two
Amber: Mother!

SONG IT TAKES TWO Link, Tracy

SCENE 4 cont. bis

Josie: Great song!! Thanks Link!! And now guys and gadgets we say good bye until tomorrow!!
(They all wave goodbye and exit, except Corny and Velma)

Velma: Negro day everyday? That chubby Communist girl I assure you, controversy is not what this
show wishes to promote.
Josie: Negroes and chubby girls watch the show too, Velma. To keep your audience, you got to keep up
with the times.
Velma: This shows fine the way it is
Josie: Bringing Tracy is just the beginning. Ive got terrific ideas for updating the show.
Velma: So youve got ideas, do you? And going behind my back to put this no-talent girl on the show is
one of them?
Josie: Right, Velma. Its time we put kids on the show who look like the kids who watch the show.
Velma: Not while Im producing it.
Josie: I was thinking it might be time to change that, too.
Velma: Are you threatening me, Collins?
Josie: Aw, you know me, Velma! On the other hand, I could always take the show to Channel 11.
(Josie exits laughing)

Edna: (into the phone) Yes. Thank you so much! Im sure Tracy appreciates your vote for Miss Teenage
Hairspray. Yes! And she loves you too. Very much. Whoever you are. Goodbye! (She hangs up the phone)
This is crazy.
Tracy: (bursting in excitedly) Mama did you see, did you see me?
Edna: Of course I did. It was on television. I had to. The phones been ringing all day. To think, the fruit of
my womb, a beloved TV icon.
Tracy: So youre not mad at me?
Edna: Mad? How could I be mad at you? Youre famous! If youd only told me you was going to get in
the show, I never would have said you couldnt. But sit tell me, is fame all you thought it would be? Are
you happy, honey?
Tracy: Yes, Mama. And I think Im in love.
Edna: I know, Ive been following (the telephone rings again) There it goes again.
Tracy: (answering the phone) Hello? Yes this is Tracy Turnblad. Hello, Mr Pinky.

Tracy: You want to hire me as your exclusive spokes girl? (Shes excited and looks at her mother, then

be our pleasure. Well be right over, Mr. Pinky. Goodbye! (She hangs up the phone)
Edna: An agent! I dont know any agents.
Tracy: Mama, theres a great big world out there I know nothing about. When things get rough, a girl
needs her mother.

(bell tone) I can hear the bells!
Tracy: (reviving) Where am I? Link? (into Links eyes) Wherever I am, please, no one change the channel
Link: Youve got a funny way of putting things. I like that.
Penny: Seaweed found this (showing some band aids) hes so nurturing.
Tracy: Oh, Link this is my friend Seaweed
Seaweed: Hey, Trace, I know whatll make you feel netter. My moms having a party at our Record Shop
on North Avenue. Wanna come check it out?
Penny: I, too, feel not good. May I also come check it out?
Seaweed: You surely may
Tracy: Ive never been to North Avenue before
Link: Would it be safe up there for, you know, us?
Seaweed: Dont worry, its cool
Penny: Imagine being invited places by colored people
Tracy: It feels so hip!
Seaweed: Glad you feel that way, friends. Cause not everybody does. Lets go! (se van por las escaleras
de adelante)

(Record Shop. Black people dancing and talking. They enter)

Seaweed: Hi everyone, I bought some friends to the party.
Lil Inez: Hey, youre Tracy. Youre my favourite dancer on the Josie Collins show!
Seaweed: This is my sister, Little Inez
Tracy: Sure. I saw you at the audition
Lil Inez: Well, youre the only one who did, cause they discriminated me for my skin colour and my
size
Seaweed: This is my mother
Motormouth: Oh yes, Ive seen you, sweetie. All aglow on Josies show
Tracy: Gee, thanks, but Im only there because of your son. Why cant we all dance together like this on
TV?
Motormouth: Think we havent tried? Weve pleaded, begged and lied. We pressured the mayor,
petitioned the government, and what did we get?
Lil Inez: One day a month
Seaweed: Enough talk, lets dance
(they start dancing when the door suddenly bursts open)
Amber: Aaaii!! Link! What are you doing in this huge crowd of minorities?
Link: Trying to fit in. What are you doing?
Amber: I was waiting for you when I saw you getting on the North Avenue Bus and I followed you here in
my new car
Link: Were having a blast. Come, jump in.
(the door bursts open again)
Velma: Aaiiee!! Amber! Has anyone touched you? I saw you getting into your new car so I followed in
mine. (to Tracy) Oh, I should have known youd be at the bottom of this barrel
(the door opens again and Edna enters with a take-out bag)
Edna: Oh! Tracy, that was you I saw!
Tracy: Mama, what are you doing here?

8
Edna: I had a sudden craving for chicken and waffles so I drove up to buy some and I saw you. Hello
everyone, Im Tracys mom.
Velma: Oh! So youre what spawned that!
Edna: Excuse me? (Edna takes a threatening step towards Velma)
Velma: (starting towards the door) Come on, Amber. Lets get back to the right side of the track, if our
cars are still there.
Amber: (following Velma) Lets go Link.
Link: Amber, youre being rude to these people
Velma: (as if to a dog) Amber, come!
Amber: (just like Velma) Link, come! (he doesnt move) Link, come!!!
Link: Amber. Go.
Amber: What happened to the blond, spineless boy I fell in love with? Mother, come (she marches out the
door)
Velma: With pleasure (they leave)
Lil Inez: Are all white people like that?
Seaweed: No, just most
Tracy: Well, I know how we can start changing that. If kids saw us dancing together on TV, theyd realize
that we are not so different after all. (they all agree) We just want to have a good time. Today is mother
and daughters day. We can go to the show and dance all together.
Lil Inez: That thinkings revolutionary
Motormouth: Child, it aint that easy. What if they call the cops? People could get hurt
Tracy: Then well all walk out together. Theres me. Theres Link and Im sure we can get some of the
others. Without dancers, thyve got no show
Link: (pulling Tracy aside) Tracy, you cant do this, youre new to the council. Youll be thrown off the
show for sure
Tracy: Thats why were doing it all together
Link: Not me
Tracy: You dont think segregation is wrong?
Link: I like these people, but this has to do with my future. Ive been dancing and singing and smiling in
this show for 3 years waiting for it to lead me to success. Im not going to throw it away. Cmon. Im
leaving and you gotta too.
Tracy: No! I want to do this and so should you. Its whats right. Stay Link. Please stay.
Link: Sorry
Tracy: But you and me together I was just starting to think
Link: Sure, me too. But I dont now. Its getting too complicated. And theres still Amber. Se ya, little
darling (He exits)
Penny: Im sorry, Tracy
Tracy: Oh, mama How would I ever think Link Larking would ever care about someone like me?
Edna: Why shouldnt he? Youre a beautiful girl. Give him time. Im sure hell figure out hes crazy about
you.
Tracy: You have to say that, youre my mother (they hug)
Edna: But Tracy, he could be right.. Should you risk your career?
Tracy: I never would have gotten on the show without Seaweed. Now its payback time
Edna: Thats my girl
Tracy: (determined) Okay. So this is how were gonna do it. Bring your mothers..
Penny: And sisters!
Tracy: Lets go to the studio and lets take signs!
Penny: Yes! And put words on them!
Tracy: Mrs. Motormouth, you and LilInez will walk in first. Me and mama will be right behind you.

(Music. They are very excited and start marching. LilInez brings signs and gives them to everyone. They
march down the satge saying Tvs got to integrate. The Corny Mothers and Daughters appear on stage.

Edna: If my mother were alive (arm around Tracy) shed be so proud. Remember, your grandma was
a suffragette.
Tracy: Right. You havent seen the last of us, Mrs. Von Tussle. Well be marching again, and soon, to the
beat of a whole new era!

(Matron enters with a clipboard)
Matron: Von Tussle, Velma? Von Tussle, Amber?
Amber: Thats us
Matron: Ladies, youre free to go with the sincere apologies of the state of Maryland and the personal
compliments of the governor himself.
Velma: The governor? Raelly? Sweet, chubby Millard. We dated on and off in college. Now, if you
doublewide twins will excuse me, I have a national TV special to produce
Amber: (turning back to Tracy) I was never here. This never happened. Oh, Tracy. Any message for Link?
Place it on my lips, and Ill be sure he gets it.
(they exit laughing)
Edna: I still dont care for them
Motormouth: This jail just got a whole lot nicer.
(Matron reenters and unlocks the cell door)
Matron: Youve got a visitor. Bail has been posted.
Motormouth: Thank the Lord for those who can afford
Matron: Miss Prudy Pingleton posted bail.

Matron: (reading from an official-looking document) Tracy Turnblad is herewith and forthwith withheld

un-American!
Matron: Dont make things worse for yourselves. Move out peacefully.
Edna: Im not going anywhere without my daughter
Tracy: Its okay, mom. They cant keep me here forever. Besides, Ive got a lot to think about. I might as
well do it in solitary refinement
Matron: Im counting to three and then Im arresting you all for illegal trespass
Edna: Lets go. We cant do Tracy any good here. (to Matron) Touch one hair of my daughters head and I
ll teach you a whole new meaning for split ends

Link: Tracy? Where are you? Its me, Link Larkin.
Tracy: Link! Over here
Link: Shh! The guards asleep. Gee, you look beautiful behind bars.
Tracy: It must be the low-watt institutional lightning. Link, what are you doing here?
Link: Oh Tracy, seeing you dragged off to jail brought me back to my senses. I couldnt eat, I couldnt
sing. I couldnt even concentrate
Tracy: You couldnt eat?
Link: No. And I know a boy like me doesnt deserve a girl like you, but.. (he takes out a ring).. Its a little
scuffed from Amber throwing it to my face when I told her Id rather be with you
Tracy: You did? Its beautiful. I have a good life: great parents, my own room, good music, three sweaters,
but you know what Ive been missing?
Link: I think I do

(lights to Pennys room. Prudy is tying Penny to the bed)

Prudy: Penny Lou Pingleton, you are absolutely, positively, permanently punished. This ones for being
wilful. This ones for being deceitful. This ones for being neglectful. And this ones for crying wee wee
wee, all the way home. (the phone rings) Why is it every time you tie your daughter up the phone rings?
(She exits just as Seaweed appears in the stairs as if it was a window)
Seaweed: Pssst! Penny!
Penny: Seaweed! Shh! Dont let my mother hear you.
Seaweed: What happened?
Penny: Shes punishing me for going to jail without her permission
Seaweed: Ive come to rescue the princess from the tower
Penny: Oh, Seaweed, you do care! I was worried it was just a lonely teenagers forbidden fantasy.
Seaweed: From the first moment I saw you, I knew that even the colours of our skin coulnt keep us apart
(struggling with the rope) But, damn, these knots are something else
Penny: Hurry Seaweed! (Seaweed sets Penny free. They exit together down the stairs)

(lights to Tracys cell)

Link: Well, Ive got a Zippo lighter, and.. uh (embarrassed) Ive got some hairspray too (he takes it out
from his jacket. Link torches the cells door and Tracy escapes. They hug and exit together down the
stairs)

national TV. We may never get another chance like that. And this time well get by getting Josie and the
guards at the studio to help us.
Tracy: No, Ive got to turn myself in and go back to jail.
Lil Inez: Say what?
Tracy: I cant put you in any more danger. We should have thought more before we broke out..
Delfi: Yeah, listen, Ive already been to jail one time for backing up the white girl. This time Im staying
out!
Caro: Yeah, Im with her Besides we already tried once and it didnt work
Delfi: And this time it wont be like Mother-Daughters day. Mrs Von Tussle said therell be armed guards
at the studio
Penny: With arms
Delfi: Someone could get shot
Caro: And for what? Just so we can dance on some show?
Martu: Hold it! Nobody ever said this was gonna be easy. If somethings worth having, its worth fighting
for. Tracy why did you start all this in the first place? Was it just to dance on TV?
Tracy: No
Caro: Was it so you could get the boy?
Tracy: No, I almost lost him because of it
Delfi: Then maybe it was just to get yourself famous.
Tracy: No. I just think its stupid that we cant all dance together
Motormouth: So you tried once and you failed. We cant get lazy when things get crazy. Children, you
were not the first to try and you wont be the last, but Im here to tell you that Im gonna keep lining up
until someday somebody breaks through.
