The effect of globalization on the civil engineering profession and the increasing expansion

of engineering services into issues of engineering present both incredible opportunity and
significant challenges for the future of civil engineering. As the world becomes more globalized
and as world population increases, civil engineers will play a critical role in addressing the
concerns of the global community such as decaying infrastructure and deterioration of the
environment.

1. Use of Recycled Content in Building materials

There is lot of thing going on in the field of green concrete but somehow, its not really
used commercially in the industry. Also, steel is a recyclable material. So, I believe, in
future there are fair chances of reusing steel in building construction. Of course, there
many parameters such as corrosion and aging of these materials that may impact there re
usability but then thats where the challenge lies.

2. Zero or Minimal waste disposal from building

Majority of waste generated from the building is paper, plastic and bio degradable
material. Most of it could be recycled. Hence the building should have an integrated
recyclable system.

3. Definite earthquake resilient structure

Current codes doesnt actually allow us to say that any structure could resist earthquake
of a particular magnitude. It follows more probabilistic approach in defining it for e.g. a
structure has 1 in 1000 possibility of failing under earthquake in the span of 50 years.
4. Age of Concrete
Age of Concrete is about 100 years hence any modern structure will have difficult time to
exist for more than a century. Whereas structures made of limestone have existed for
more than 5 centuries, so there is possible area of research in increasing the age of
concrete.

Therefore, in the era globalization there have a lot of problem in pollution such as air
pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, and greenhouse gases that give a major impact to our
earth. Therefore, all of field engineer need unite to overcome the problems. There have several of
problem need to solve by engineer.

1. Impact on ecosystem:
The biggest challenge engineers are facing now is the impact of science on the
ecosystem. we have developed so many luxuries but at the cost of nature. The power we
are using comes from burning the coal which causes greenhouse effect, the Freon we are
using in A.C is causing a hole in the ozone layer. All these effects are threats to the very
existence of planet earth. Now the engineers have the biggest challenge to develop clean
and green energy through cutting edge technology and cost reduction.

2. Existence of human race:

Nuclear energy may be one of the greatest discoveries of engineers but wait, it could
decimate the whole human race merely by few tons of uranium loaded shell. Engineering
has the biggest challenge to stop the proliferation of deadly technologies for the certain of
mankind. We could not tolerate a chemical weapon in a civil war like North Korea.
3. Sustainable Development:
This high frequency word is also a major challenge for the engineers. They have to invent
certain technology which will efficiently utilize the resources without compromising the
future need. Resource reduction through subtle technology must be accentuated so that
our future generation will live more comfortably.

4. Elimination of Diseases:
Though this heading may be placed under the medical science but genetical and bio
medical engineering also have a major role to play in saving the human lives. Even
though we have made giant strides in almost every field but we aren't able to cure a
simple viral 'swine flu' or a common acidity problem. Genetics & biomedical engineering
in conjunction with medical science could do magic in this regard.

5. Access to everyone:
Though science grew leaps and bounds everyone is not reaping the benefits. A child
living in slum isn't able to use Internet because of high cost likewise people living in
remote villages of African countries are not getting the benefits of advancement of
medical science, they are still dying of trivial and small diseases. Engineers have the
greatest challenge to make it affordable and accessible to everyone.
