1 GENERAL

1.1 Design Basis

This study has been prepared for the evaluation of liquefaction resistance of soils in Padma (Jashaldia) Wate
Treatment Project (Phase-1) Project site. The subsoil conditions of the project site applied for the soil lique-
faction study are based on bore- hole locations extracted from the final engineering report of the soil invest-
igation to be finally issued.

2.1.1 Subsoil Condition

- Soil Type obtained from " Attachment" = Field Test Result

- Most cohessionless soils,we could not carry out unit weight tests because Sampling of
cohessionless soil is very difficult.In that case,we estimated unit weight values from typical
soil properties in a natural state summarized in the below table

Table No: 1.3 Void ratio,Moisture content,and Dry Unit weight for some Typical Soils in a
Natural State.

2.2 Evaluation of liquefaction Resistance on Soil

2.2.1 Cycle Stress ratio (CSR)

1) Calculation of CSR
amax vo
CSR = 0.65 x x rd
g 'vo
Where, amax = peak ground acceleration at the ground surface
g = accelaration of gravity
vo = total vertical overburden stress
= zus x d
'vo = Vertical effective stress
= zus x d + zs x (sat - w)
zus = thickness of individual layers above the water table.
zs = thickness of saturated soil deposits below the water table
sat = saturated unit weight of soil
w = unit weight of water = 9.81 kn/m3
rd = Estimated average value of rd
= 1.0-0.00765z for z
= 1.174-0.0267z for 9.15
