mostly because the resources, machines, and jobs for the programs that save and produce these
necessities, leading to an incentive of increasing the market for machines and other products that
function as recyclers. Large companies and small companies alike have been making machines
built for recycling plastic, glass, metals, and other important resources. According to the official
page of California Against Waste, as of 2015, nearly 1,787 companies in the state focus on
recycling machines used in over 3,000 plants. (CAW, 2015) Other companies create recycling
machines for businesses that don't need or have the ability to use large scale recycling plants,
such as buyable industrial robot crushers, like General Kinematics and Seta. Companies like
these that build shredders and recyclers are also large scale in their production of bottle recyclers
for Coca-cola and Pepsi in their programs. Machines used for recycling purposes has however
led the biggest frontier, with about 33 large scale technology companies working on products
that will create a standing advancement towards the growing recycling industry. (hbr.org, 2017)
The product of many recycling machines is dependant on the manufacturer, as well as the
builders and designers of them. Technology companies, soda companies, grocery stores, and
waste management companies are all responsible for creating, building and manufacturing
recycling products specified for that companies required functionalities. Coca-cola in 2013
proposed a plan to create reverse vending machines so they could continue a recycling
program internationally, along with being able to use current recycling bins in 25 percent of all
plastic bottles used for Coca-cola. Other companies that produce recycling machines specialize
in mechanics and large scale recycling; for example, SEDA, and General Kinematics are
mechanical design companies that specialize in shredders for products like metal, plastic, and
other important resources that they can use in both their own products and general conservation
of resources. Waste management and REM are large scale users of recycling machines, with WM
investing in companies like REM to produce machines capable of getting the job done in a
sustainable way with new machines and inventions leading the way.
Due to these companies making a huge contribution to business in recycling, the industry
has risen, saving billions in resources and giving back hundreds of thousands of jobs in the line
of work. The aforementioned machines that companies like SEDA and REM produce have
massive contributions to the market of recycling machines and products that save these
companies so much, with sales of these machines in the thousands. For example, SEDA has
multiple recycling machines in 4,000 units, with 30 different large scale companies using them
worldwide. Nearly $3 billion was made off of non mechanical and mechanical products that used
plastic, metal and rubber for companies of all industries. The market in the U.S. for using
machines in resource recovery from recycling products is 5.5 billion in 2016, with the number of
units sold being round 250,000 according to ibisworld.com, and the industry is expected to be
expanding and getting larger exponentially by 2020, bringing the industry and market tens of
Manny products can be recycled, but some are recycled easier than others. Aluminum is a
very large market for recycling, due to the fact that aluminum can be reused indefinitely. It is
also used in a variety of applications from aerospace to construction. The that it uses 90% less
energy to recycle aluminum when compared to mining it, which makes it a prime material to
recycle. (Aluminum Association, 2017) Aluminum recycling became popular during war time
due to the amount of aluminum that was need for the war effort when compared to the amount
that was able to be mined and the costs involved in mining it. Plastic is another item that is
commonly recycled. Many different types of plastics can be recycled, even packing foam. What
plastic can be recycled into depends on the properties of the material that it started in. For
example, plastic bottles can be made into insulation and synthetic fabrics for clothing and other
similar products. Recycled paper is also used in many different products. These range from toilet
paper to egg cartons even cardboard can be made using recycled paper. Using recycled paper
instead of making it from trees saves energy, water, and eliminates some air pollution. Glass,
even though it cant have impurities, to be reused easily, it can still be used to make glass food
containers. The recycled glass with too many impurities is made into other things that require
Switzerland has the highest recycling rate out of all the countries at 54% of waste is
recycled. They have collection points for trash and recyclables. 76% of items that can be
recycled are actually recycled. They incinerate all other trash that is not recyclable. The other
two countries that are in the top three are Australia at 49.7% and Germany at 48% in 2013.
(Energy Digital, 2013) Australia has a national waste policy that set goals for waste reduction by
2020. The national waste policy outlines many steps that are intended to assist in reaching the
goals set by the policy. Over in Germany, there is the green dot program. The green dot program
is a program that requires that companies pay a fee according to the amount of packaging they
use on a product. Germany also has an elaborate sorting system for recyclables and other
household waste. Another country that is trying to recycle more is Sweden. Sweden has reduced
their use of landfills by burning what they can not recycle to produce energy. What is left over is
then sorted to be used in other products this saves large amounts of money for the country in
energy production.
