Biome Project Instructions

Ms. Nobles 5th Grade Class

Student Name: _____________________________________________________

I was assigned this project on: _________________________________________
Project Due Date: April 17, 2017
My assigned Biome: _________________________________________________
The purpose of this project:
- Observe the way organisms live and survive in their ecosystem by interacting with
the living and non-living elements.
- Predict the effects of changes in ecosystems caused by living organisms, including
humans, such as the overpopulation of grazers or the building of highways.
- Describe how the flow of energy derived from the Sun, used by producers to create
their own food, is transferred through a food chain and food web to consumers and
decomposers.

1. Research your assigned Biome.

Resources for research:
- Books from the Public Library
- I have some books available in my classroom library

- Marietta College Department of Biology and Environmental Science's - Biomes of

the World

- World Biomes and Ecological Relationships - Provides information about the

relationships between biomes and their organisms.

- The World's Biomes - A web site packed with information about the different types
of biomes found on Earth.

- Introduction to Biomes - This site discusses distribution patterns of biomes.

- Earth Floor: Biomes - A great site that covers many science objectives. The section
on biomes describes how to read a climograph.

- Biomes - This web site includes a nice graphic of the globe and where different
biomes can be found around the world. Provides factual information on biomes,
also.
- World Biomes - This site covers the 5 major biomes of the world and has links to
print resources and a printable biome map.

- Enchanted Learning: Biomes - Habitats - This web site provides descriptions of the
different biomes and gives examples of the type of weather, soil, plants, and
animals found in each.

- Mission: Biomes - This is a great site for those just learning about biomes and
advanced learners. Each biome has a description and a mission to accomplish.
Activities include vocabulary, graphing activities, and more.

- Biomes From A Student's Perspective - This site includes biome web pages
designed by ninth grade students.

- World Builders: Introduction to Biomes - A great site that provides much more than
just the basic facts. This site includes information about food chains and the
special effects of latitude and longitude.

- Eight Biomes of the World - This site gives information about eight major biomes.

- Wetlands - This site is sponsored by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and

gives useful information about wetlands.

- More About Biomes - A colorful site with lots of information.

2. Organize your biomes information. You will need to research the following topics:
1. List specific producers, consumers, decomposers that can be found in
the ecosystem.
2. How do these organisms interact with each other (provide a food chain,
identify the role of each organism)?
*be sure to include prey, predators, decomposers, producers, consumers, and the Sun
3. What is the niche of three of theses organisms?
4. Where in the world can this ecosystem be found?
5. What type of plants are found in this ecosystem?
6. What adaptations do the plants have in order to survive in this
ecosystem?
7. How do humans impact and effect the ecosystem (ex. Building dams
and highways, threats, cause and effect)?
8. What is the climate of the ecosystem? (climate: average temperature,
average precipitation amounts, are there seasons)
9. What makes this Biome different from the others?
10. Interesting Facts
3. All information must be presented on a tri-fold board.
- The information presented should be: organized, creative, and current.
- Presentation boards should be: colorful, creative, intriguing, and organized.
- All picture should have subheadings (describe the picture).
- Pictures to include: a map of the biome location, two plants you described, two
animals you described, landscape, and one picture that is a threat.
4. A bibliography should be attached to the back of your Biome Project Board. The
bibliography should include 4 resources, one of the resources should be a book).
5. Students will present their presentations to the class on April 17, 2017.
