Chapter 1: Misty Morning

1. Dawan and her brother, Kwai, live in a village in Thailand.


Dawan is fourteen but she is in the same class as Kwai, who
is thirteen. Their parents believe that it is foolish and
wasteful to send girls to school. But they allowed Dawan
to go to school with Kwai after he insisted that she joined
him.
2. Every day, before dawn, they sit on the old wooden bridge
over the river and talk before going to school. That day, as
usual, they sit on the bridge and talk about the government
scholarship to study in the City school.
3. Kwai tells Dawan that he will study hard and improve life in
the village if he wins the scholarship.
4. Then Dawan and Kwai talk about the landlord who takes
piles of rice from the villagers as rent for their rice fields.
Sometimes, they do not have enough rice for themselves.
5. Kwai encourages Dawan to speak out in class. He tells her
that she could win the scholarship too as she studies harder
than him and always gets good marks.
6. Dawan is very sure that Kwai will get the scholarship. She
tells him that she will not get it because she is a girl.

fertilizers/set up a hospital for their village/advise the
people how not to get cheated by the tax collector/landlord.
