Introduction
The phenomenon of projectile occurs when there are 2 forces exerts
on the object which are horizontal and vertical components of motion. Due
to Newtons first law, the object will keep moving at constant velocity.
However, if the object falls to the earth's surface, Gravitation will
demonstrate, and also, constantly rise the objects speed. In projectile, it
combines these 2 components of motion, so when calculating the force,
time, acceleration, etc., they should be considered simultaneously. In this
experiment, we will see how the projectile works and how it is accurate in
calculation.
Objective
The objective of this experiment is to use the formula of projectile to
calculate the landing of a ball, and make a ball go into a hoop.

Materials
Steel ball
Hoop
Meterstick
Lab quest
Projectile launcher
Tape
Hand pump
Photogate

Procedures
Step 1 : Set a projectile launcher apart from the hoop 2 meters
Step 2: Calculate the velocity going to use
Step 3: Set the pressure
Step 4: Apply pressure until it makes sound 3 times and put a ball into a
launcher
Step 5: Launch and check if the velocity is correct
Step 6: If the velocity is not correct, then adjusting the pressure and going
back to step 4
Step 7: Make the launcher align with the hoop
Step 8: Apply pressure and insert a ball into a launcher
Step 9: Launch and see if the ball go into the hoop or not
Step 10: Collect data

Calculation
Set constant variable : Gravity = -9.8 m/s 2 Angle of the
projectile launcher = 53
Height of hoop = 0.6 m Distance between
the launcher and the hoop = 2 m
The height from the base to the launcher = 14.6 cm
Horizontal component = s = ut
2
Find t =
ucos 53
1 2
Vertical component = s = ut + 2 g t

2 1 2
0.46 = ( u sin 53 )( )+ (-9.8)( )
u cos 53 2 u cos 53

2
2
0.46 = (2)(tan 53) + 2 2
u cos 53
54
2.19 =
u2
U = 4.97 m/s

Result
As a result the ball is falling directly into the hoop with the initial
velocity of 4.97 m/s with and angle of 53 degree which is exactly the same
result as we calculated. However, in some of the previous experiment the
ball seem to be falling behind or over the ring because of the amount of
pressure we put in can affect the initial velocity. Also different angle of
projectile launcher may require different amount of pressure.Furthermore,
the result of this experiment can also demonstrate the Newtons first law
of motion that the object will keep moving in a constant velocity unless
their is some force acting on it. So we can conclude that there is a gravity
force acting on the ball while we firing it due the result of the experiment
matches the calculation and also the vertical downward force that pushes
the ball down into the hoop.
