Lesson
Our class is going to go on a Scavenger Hunt using QR Codes. There will be QR
Summary:
Codes posted around the school. The initial QR will be posted on the door of our
room during one of the Scavenger Hunts. Since I work with Preschoolers, they all
have different schedules. Some of the children in my class come everyday, others
came Tuesday and Thursday, and some come Wednesday-Friday. In order for all of
the children to get exposed to the Lesson, we do similar activities a few different
times a week. The students that are here Monday through Friday get a good grasp
on the information with the repetition.

I may go to the gym and sneak out, while my coworker watches the students and
post a QR across from the gym entrance.

Estimated We have been working on QR Codes for approximately a week and a half. They are

posted around the room. The children have been watching the videos three at a
time. A four year old girl found a QR Code on a magazine and we watched the
dancing promo that went with the magazine this week. Originally the class was
broken up in two parts. It was a low day and early, so each group consisted of four
children. We reviewed the shape of the QR Codes, the color (Black and White), I
showed them how to cut URL's and paste the URL in the Code generator to create
individualized QR Codes, Copy starts with the letter C. The initial lesson was about
twenty minutes. Each Center time is about fifteen to twenty minutes where they
scan the QR Codes. My class is particularly found of 'Vowel Bat' on YouTube.
Yesterday a boy in my class found a QR Code on a box. Several of the children
tried to explain QR Codes to their parents.

This paticular activity will take about twenty minutes. Preschoolers should never sit
much longer than twenty minutes. In our classroom, we try to have a physical
activity after sitting for a long time. When excess energy has been expelled, they
are more likely to be able to focus on sit down times.
Preparatio What preparation is needed? I need to get online, find videos that will lead the children to
n of places around the school or I can go take pictures around the school and turn them into QR
materials Codes.
and
environme
nt What materials will be used? Printed QR Codes, My old Cell Phone, Tape, Scissors to cut QR
Codes apart

How will the learning environment be set up? We will gather the children, tell them that we
will be having a scavenger hunt or we will leave the room and I will tape a full size QR Code
to the outside of our door. The class will get excited about the QR Codes and want to scan
it. It will lead them around the school.

Instructional Procedures:

Week 1:
Introduce QR Codes. What shape are they? What color are they? What do they do? Make it
meaningful to the students. Show them cute animal videos and videos that make them excited.

Example: Baby Panda videos, Baby Hippo video, Signing Time with Alex and Leah Theme song.
Week 2:
Set up a QR scanning center. Bring in old cell phone. Add school WiFi to the phone. Show each
child how to scan, open the scanning app, how to get back to the app from the YouTube video,
and how to share with their friend so each child has an opportunity to scan and not simply watch
the other child or children scan.

Goal: Each child to be somewhat familiar with how the QR scanner on my old cellphone works

Week 3:
Set up Scavenger Hunt. Follow where the Scavenger Hunt leads. We may have a 'prize' at the
end like an extra snack. We will repeat the Scavenger Hunt 2-5 times each week.

Week 4:
We will review QR Codes. We will Use QR Scanners. This is usually the week that one of the
students come up with a 'new' idea and we focus on it for the week.

Week 5:
This week is complete review of QR Codes. We will do centers, take turns scanning. New QR
Codes will be places around the room.

Week 6:
We will review QR Codes. This week we will start introducing the new Theme.

Extension
Here is a List of some of the URL links that the children will be going to during the 6 Week Lesson
Plans:
https://youtu.be/3ARNqyQ0CuY This song is about coins. It has a catchy tune that the children end up singing
when repeated that teaches them a Penny is one, a Nickel is five, a Dime is ten, and a Quarter is twenty-five.
Each child needs to learn how much money is at some point in their childhood, we are attempting to give them a
head start.
https://youtu.be/f2hXa8dbK3o This video is Vowel Bat. It sings a song about a-e-i-o-u. It shows the vowels
and sounds them out.

https://youtu.be/PzK0-VSZPd4 This is an ABC Mouse video about the letter F. It list several things that starts
with the letter Ff and gives the students several opportunities to recognize the letter Ff and name the letter in the
song.
https://youtu.be/d8Ce9DKDvEU This video is a story about Little Red Writing Hood. It is a hooked on phonics
video. It has letter cookies in it that is named. It counted how many letters were eaten by the wolf. There is
Alphabet Soup named the letters in the soup. There is Alphabet blocks that were named. The wolf keeps taking
Little Red Writing Hood's letters. At the end of the story, the wolf stole the letters to make a Happy Birthday
sign for Little Red Writing Hood, because the Grandmother asked him to.
Differentiated Instructional Support: I have the QR Codes set up for various stages of
learning. We have some children that know their Birthday, Address, Phone Number, Entire
Alphabet, they are reading, know the Months of the year, Days of the week. We have children
that only know the letters in their name and are struggling with that.

I have posted QR Codes around the room that Read stories to the children, explain the letters and
letter sounds in various ways. There are videos that address reading like mat, bat, pig, dig
words. There are videos that explain what a vowel is. There are videos dealing with Money.
Each child is learning at various stages and I have pasted QR Codes that continue the education
of the most gifted student in our class.

On the first day of QR Codes, I made sure i individually showed each child how to work the
scanner. I then watched them do it, so I knew that they understood. After that initial moment, I
monitored them to make sure they knew what they were doing. Each child asked for help as
needed. For the next few weeks we will be reinforcing what we have learned using the QR Codes,
by practicing in small groups, as a class, and asking each child about QR Codes and what they
are for. Repetition and practice is the key to reinforcing knowledge.

Vocabulary: QR Code, QR Scanner, Copy, Paste, Scavenger Hunt, Mystery, Follow the Leader

For teachers Old Cell Phone, Printed QR Codes, Tape, Scissors

Send home a Parent Letter about QR Codes, what they are, how we are using
them in class, and some of the QR Codes that are posted around the room for
parents to try out with their child at home.
For students The students will need a phone or tablet with a QR Scanner app downloaded on it.

They will open app, or adult can open app. However, the students in my class
know what the app looks like and are able to open it on their own. They will need
printed QR Codes to scan that will be provided by the teacher.
