Trinidad who came to
the U.S. seeking medical
attention for his wife. With
nothing more than a third-
grade education, he had
to ask for help to read the
immigration forms when
arriving in the states. “On the

him for help,” Elliot said.
“That’s one of my favorite
success stories to tell.”
But most adults in
Maryland who struggle with
reading don’t get the help

Alvin Greene, S.C.’s ‘Mystery Candidate,’ Cleared
Alvin M. Greene, South Carolina’s new Democratic nominee
for Senate, paid his candidate filing fee from his own pocket,
state law enforcement officials said last Friday.
The unemployed military veteran had come under
investigation pertaining
to his ability to pay the
$10,440 filing fee in his
surprisingly successful
campaign.
Though he did no
campaigning and no
fundraising, Greene
convinced more than
100,000 South Carolinians
to vote for him, beating out

legislature for four terms.
From the beginning Greene, 32, maintained that the monies
came from his penchant for saving and frugal living. That claim
was validated, State Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie
Lloyd told The Associated Press. In reviewing Greene’s bank
accounts, SLED agents found an October deposit of nearly
$6,000, Greene’s military exit pay, and about $3,000 from state
and federal tax refunds, Lloyd said.
“He clearly does not have someone paying him. He just
decided to take his money and run for U.S. Senate. There’s no
big conspiracy,” Lloyd said.
The obscure candidate’s victory spawned a political battle
that’s reached beyond the state. House Majority Whip James
E. Clyburn, D-S.C., and others had questioned whether Greene
- who lives at home with his sick father – was planted by the
Republican Party.
And Greene’s personal troubles, including AP reports that
he faced felony obscenity charges for showing pornographic
material to a University of South Carolina student last year,
stirred up a clamor of requests for his exit from the race.
With little campaigning, no Web site and paltry funds,
Greene’s platform and plans to aid the community are largely
unclear.
However, he will address the Manning, S.C., chapter of the
NAACP on July 17 in his first public address since winning the
Democratic primary.
California NAACP Leader Under Fire
According to blackvoices.com, over 20 African-American
leaders in California are calling for the resignation of Alice
Huffman, president of NAACP’s California State Conference,
after she announced her support of efforts to legalize marijuana
in the state.
Among those allegedly calling for her resignation is Bishop
Ron Allen, a member of the International Faith-Based Coalition,
who said Proposition 19 would be harmful to Black Americans.

Huffman said she will not resign and continues to support the
controversial Proposition 19.
“Prop. 19 is about eliminating enforcement practices that
are targeting and creating a permanent underclass of citizens, of
African Americans, caught in a criminal justice system while
other people, a more privileged class, go free,’’ Huffman said in
a statement.
According to the report, Allen said Huffman’s position may
be motivated by financial gain offered by The Open Society
Institute – a marijuana legalization group – that recently gave the
NAACP $700, 000.

to State HBCUs

Black Colleges and Universities with a symbolic check for
$110,000 during the closing ceremonies of the 2010 NCLBCF

Johns Hopkins to Assess East Baltimore Health

In order to find an answer to a problem, one
must first ask a question. Johns Hopkins Urban
Health Institute (UHI) plans on using that
philosophy to learn about the health concerns
of Baltimore residents.
The UHI is in the beginning phases of
planning a health assessment for residents in
East Baltimore. The assessment itself is not
scheduled to start until September, 2011, and
will likely last for a few months according to
UHI Associate Director Chris Gibbons.
“In order to fix something, you have to
know what’s broken,” Gibbons said. “We have
to understand what we’re doing in order to do
the right thing.”
The assessment, which will be a
collaborative effort with UHI and a number of
community groups and organizations, will also
give them an idea of where to start. There are
a number of health concerns and problems in
the East Baltimore community, Gibbons said,
but knowing what the most pressing health
problems are and which need to be priorities
will give them a better idea of where to start.
The survey will also aim to find out
various health care related issues affecting the
community such as the number of individuals
who use Johns Hopkins’ medical services, and
what most individuals are treated for when
they are admitted to the hospital. The survey
will also try to ascertain where most people
in the community go for particular health care
services, the number of people who are turned
away by Johns Hopkins, and why they are
turned away.
Finding answers to the aforementioned
concerns is why Leon Purnell, the executive
director of the Men & Family Center, is one
of the community leaders taking part in the
assessment. He hopes it addresses the health
disparities those in East Baltimore are faced
with—lack of access to health care due to many
residents not having insurance, the quality of
health care those same residents receive, and
the lack of respect they are seemingly given.
Though he has assisted with previous
community health assessments that fizzled
out early, Purnell said past mistakes have only
made him optimistic about this one.
“I’m hopeful that by bringing the major
players to the table early in the process this
time, we can get it off and running,” he said.
“It’s not hard to see the problems that need to
be addressed. You can walk down the street and
see many of the problems that we have here.”
Gibbons said that those involved with
the assessment will reconvene in a month to
continue the process, and will discuss the most
effective way to administer the assessment
to the community. Gibbons could not make
any guarantees about results the survey may
bring, but did mention that the overall goal of
the assessment is to improve health problems
in all of East Baltimore—not just those in the
community surrounding Johns Hopkins.
“Ideally, we would like to reach the entire
area of East Baltimore,” he said. “We’re
interested in more than the five houses around
the hospital or university.”

Pr. George’s Gains State Agency, Loss Angers Anne Arundel

O’Malley recently
announced plans to move the
Department of Housing and
Community Development
(DHCD) headquarters from
Crownsville in Anne Arundel
County to an undisclosed
location in Prince George’s
County. The decision has
been met with much fanfare
in Prince George’s County,
but officials in Anne Arundel
County are furious with the
announcement.
“Prince George’s is the
second biggest county in the
state and it has never been
home to a state agency. The
governor determined it’s

said Shaun Adamec,
spokesman for O’Malley.
“It makes sense to have any
agency in Prince George’s
County. In makes perfect
sense to have this agency in
Prince George’s County.”
The governor announced
his intentions to move a
state agency to the County
in 2006. In 2008, the state
legislature organized a task
force to figure out which
agency would be best to move
to Prince George’s County.
DHCD was chosen because
its goals are aligned with
many of the current needs of
Prince George’s County.
“DHCD’s prime focus is
community development and
neighborhood stabilization
and that means things like
foreclosure prevention and
energy assistance,” Adamec
said. “These are things the
neighborhoods in Prince
George’s county benefit
from.”
The proposed move will
be to an area around one of
the county’s metro stations.
The goal is to spur economic
development, but to also
provide commuting options
for employees of DHCD,
who live outside of Prince
George’s County.
Officials within Prince
George’s County are ecstatic
about the move and see it as
an opportunity to provide
the kind of development
around metro stations that
is seen in other jurisdictions
in the Washington, D.C.
metropolitan area.
“We’re very pleased to
receive that information from
the governor’s office,” said
Kwasi Holman, president
and CEO of the Prince
George’s County Economic
Development Corporation.
“We believe that the location
of that facility near one of
our metro stations will have
a catalytic effect in terms
of spurring retail and office
development.”
However, not everyone
is behind this move. Anne
Arundel County Executive
John Leopold will try to block
any move of the facility out of
his county, saying he doesn’t
want to inconvenience Anne
Arundel residents or state
taxpayers.
“Anne Arundel County
was not consulted prior to
this decision,” Leopold said.
“When you make a decision
that significantly affects and
disrupts people’s lives, I think
it’s always a good idea to
involve the people who are
going to be impacted and the
jurisdiction in which they
live.”
Leopold wrote a letter
to the Maryland Board of
Public Works to express his
displeasure about the move.
He’s even put together a task
force to find an alternate
location for the headquarters
in Anne Arundel County.
Adamec said the governor
understands Leopold’s
concerns, and will provide
ample opportunity for DHCD
employees from Anne
Arundel County to adjust to
the move. He says there’s
more to the process than just
moving the employees from
that facility.
“As a part of this we’re
including the process of filling
that facility in Crownsville,”
Adamec said. “It could mean
that we keep the facility and
move another state agency
that’s caught in a high-rent
situation and save the state
some money by moving the
agency to the space it owns in
Crownsville.”
Meanwhile, Holman is
planning to use this news to
bolster the Prince George’s
County profile to other
federal agencies and large
corporations. “They’ve
always known, from [General
Services Administration]
to major corporations, that
Prince George’s County is
open for business,” he said.
“This is further confirmation
of our ongoing efforts to
attract business and mixed-
use to our undeveloped
or underdeveloped metro
stations.”

Report: Young Men at Recreation Centers

A major health disparity
exists between the young
men of Baltimore and
those throughout the rest
of the country according to
Johns Hopkins University
researchers. Issues of drugs,
violence and poverty are
compounded by limited
access to healthcare, which
puts them at greater risk for
physical and psychological
concerns that can negatively
influence family members and
sexual partners.
The report, “Baltimore’s

youth violence prevention program is currently
active in Baltimore City and Prince George’s
County as a community-based monitoring
organization for juvenile offenders.
However, amidst protests from many city
and state individuals and youth advocates,
O’Malley is also planning a youth jail to be
built in Baltimore City. Protesters feel the
$104 million facility should be scrapped in
favor creating more educational opportunities
for troubled youth. But the governor’s office
said funding geared toward at-risk youth has
increased 300 percent under the O’Malley-
Brown administration, and has reduced the
number of juvenile offenders sent out of state

in reducing violent crime and keeping families
safe. In June, the city recorded the lowest
number of shootings on record for any month
of June. And, this year, juvenile nonfatal
shootings are down 37 percent compared to the
previous year.
“The grant funding will allow the
Department of Recreation and Parks to
offer more activities at 10 centers located in
vulnerable neighborhoods this summer,” she
said. “Clearly, the governor understands the
needs of young people in our communities.”

of settings. That’s similar
across the nation.”

work positively with young
men, and to work with
juvenile justice to keep them
from being incarcerated,” he
said.

struggling with reading and math skills to
begin with and by eighth or ninth grade they
are floundering and end up leaving,” he said.
Of the students at GHCC, half are English
language learners. According to the Maryland
Association for Adult Community and
Continuing Education (MAACCE), 6 percent
of Baltimore’s foreign-born population speaks
English “less than very well.” Of the entire
Baltimore population, 27 percent are English
language learners, 21 percent have beginning
level skills and 11 percent have more than 12
years of education.
“It’s very much a dichotomy,” Elliot said.
“With foreign-born people, they are often
highly educated in their own countries but they
can’t succeed here because of the language
barrier. With the native-born, they just struggle
for whatever reason. It’s very hard to go
through a job-training program to learn how to
do something if you don’t know how to read.”
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said 31
percent of adults in Baltimore City are without
a high school diploma. To promote literacy,
she said she fully funded Enoch Pratt Library
in the city’s budget to keep all community
libraries open, and declared June 23 Literacy
Day throughout the city.
“Adult literacy is a crisis for Baltimore,”
she said. “The right to literacy is a city top
priority and should be a national priority.”

Echoes of Dred Scott in the
Oscar Grant verdict
“It is difficult at this

at the time of the Declaration of Independence, and when the
Constitution of the United States was framed and adopted;
but the public history of every European nation displays it in
a manner too plain to be mistaken. They had for more than a
century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order,
and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either
in social or political relations, and so far unfit that they had
no rights which the white man was bound to respect.” (Chief
Justice Roger B. Taney, in writing for the Supreme Court’s
majority opinion regarding Dred Scott v. Sandford, 1857).
The recent verdict against a former Bay Area Rapid Transit
(BART) police officer, in a Los Angeles courtroom, has once
again revealed the uneven application of justice concerning
the killing of unarmed Black youth at the hands of White law
enforcement personnel.
Found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of
22-year-old Oscar Grant, on New Year’s Day 2009, Johannes
Mehserle claimed to have confused his .40 caliber service
weapon for his “non-lethal” Taser when shooting Mr. Grant
in the back. While dozens of witnesses and cell phone video
confirmed the victim was no threat to himself or to others,
Mehserle, who claimed to be fearful of the young man’s alleged
movements, killed Mr. Grant as he laid face-down, subdued by
police officers, on an Oakland train station platform.
Subsequently desiring a “fair trial” for the former officer, the
State of California agreed to a change of venue from Oakland
to Los Angeles, where, after a short deliberation, the slap on the
wrist verdict angered many, sparking street demonstrations and
calls for additional federal charges. Raising serious questions
not only about the value of Black life in a so-called post-racial
America, but also whether juries are capable of rendering fair
decisions in racially-charged police on civilian homicide cases,
the Grant verdict echoes the majority opinion of the Supreme
Court’s infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision.
Let Us Reclaim the Dream on Aug. 28 in D.C. March and Rally

1963. The nation was at
a virtual boiling point.
Despite marked gains in the
civil rights struggle from
integrating lunch counters
and universities to equalizing
buses, the fight for justice
was far from over.
As fire hoses and police
dogs continued to be
unleashed on those seeking
basic human rights, and

desegregation in the South
were attacked by angry mobs, one man possessed the unique
ability to not only unite the masses across all racial lines, but
also candidly highlight the ills of society.
Although African Americans were free from the bondages
of slavery, they were only beginning the long struggle for equal
footing in education, employment, housing and opportunity in a
land built on the backs of their enslavement. Following his own
arrest earlier that year during a non-violent protest, Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. convened hundreds of thousands in Washington
and delivered his infamous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. On
the 47th anniversary of this momentous occasion, we must
RECLAIM THE DREAM – for it is still far from being truly
fulfilled.
On August 28th (the precise anniversary of MLK’s speech),

benefit extension from moving forward? What could they
possibly have been thinking? Sen. John Kerry (D-Ma)
described the action as “One of the worst moments I’ve seen
in 25 years in the United States Senate. In time of economic
trouble, our country expects Democrats and Republican’s to
pull together.”
This is politics at its absolute worst, with Republicans

Enshrined by Chief Justice
Taney’s court that Blacks “had
no rights which the white
man was bound to respect,”
it appears that 153 years
after that legal opinion was
given, the same remains true
regarding police violence
against unarmed Black people.
While the Scott case codified
the denial of citizenship rights
to both free and enslaved
Blacks, what today’s Grant
case has in common with the
former Scott decision is a
specific and callous disregard
for the lives of Black people in
the American legal system.
While it is interesting to
note that the Scott case has
never been overruled by the
Supreme Court itself, the portion regarding citizenship was
overturned through the passage of the 14th Amendment in
1868. With questions of citizenship having then been resolved,
the unresolved portions of the Dred Scott decision remain
alive and well in many United States courtrooms to this very
day. Prejudiced juries, police misconduct and latent racism in
the criminal justice system all bear witness to this fact and, as
reflected by the Oscar Grant shooting, the law is watered down
for some while made stricter for others.
As the family and supporters of Oscar Grant continue to
press for justice, the last hope for redress lies with lawsuits and
perhaps charges of civil rights violations brought against the
former officer in question. While these actions will never bring
the life of Mr. Grant back to his loved ones, a proper expression
of justice may see to it that society will never again tolerate the
cold-blooded killing of unarmed and subdued civilians at the
hands of law enforcement.
Nevertheless, embedded in the U.S. legal system, from
the very beginning of the American republic, the kernel of
racism that poisoned the foundation of American jurisprudence
civil rights leaders, clergy and progressive activists as we lead
a massive rally and march in Washington, D.C. As a student of
MLK’s teachings, I can think of no other appropriate way to
simultaneously pay homage to our great civil rights leader and
also highlight our ongoing struggle than to once again gather at
the nation’s capital. We will assemble at Dunbar High School
at 11 a.m. sharp and march from there for the sake of our
community, for the future of our children and for the betterment
of the entire nation.
In his “I Have a Dream Speech,” MLK remarked, “There
are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, ‘When
will you be satisfied?’”
When the Black unemployment rate is three times the White
unemployment rate in metropolitan areas like Memphis and
Minneapolis, we cannot be satisfied. When parents cannot
provide basic health care for their children, we are not satisfied.
When the Department of Education estimates that by the end
of high school, White students are about six times as likely
to be ready to pursue college-level biology courses as Black
students, we are nowhere near satisfied. When our prisons
are disproportionately filled with minority occupants, and
the numbers on ‘stops and frisks’ continue to racially profile
and target people of color, we are not satisfied. When Blacks
with the same education level as their White counterparts still
suffer from extremely higher unemployment rates, we are not
satisfied.
And when Blacks are unduly losing their employment and
homes in a continuing economic crisis, we are far from being
satisfied. This is undoubtedly a distinct moment in history.

Hatch wants drug testing. Given this vote on the unemployment
benefit extension, perhaps Sen. Hatch and the 42 might want to
demonstrate that they were not impaired when they took their
vote.
Labor Secretary Hilda Solis was among the many blasting
the Republicans for playing games with people’s survival.
In Denver last week, she told Latino elected officials that the
loss of unemployment benefits for more than 200,000 people
a week would be “devastating.” Some Republican senators
say the bill was too costly, and loaded up with too many
amendments to pass. But debate on this legislation has lasted
for more than two months – the House of Representatives
voted for unemployment benefit extensions back in March. The
tab on this bill is $18 billion, which is not chump change but
it is certainly just a fraction of the $700 billion bank bailout
and just half of the money we just sent to support our effort in
Afghanistan.
Unfortunately, the Republican senators are taking their
cues from those who are demonizing the unemployed.
Writing for the US Chronicle, Stephanie Lee reported that
online hostility toward the unemployed is notable, with those
who need help being called “whiners” and “pathetic.” Some
companies looking for workers indicate they will not consider
people who are unemployed, no matter what the reason. (Now
that is fascinating logic – who needs work more than the

continues to lurk behind the façade of “equal justice under
the law.” While the Civil Rights movements of the 1950s and
‘60s helped to put laws on the books to address inequality on
the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, these
codes focused more upon public accommodations, voting rights
and public access than with biases inherent to the legal system
itself.
The Dred Scott decision established that the rights of Black
people were subordinate to that of whites, and the Oscar Grant
verdict proved that this is still the case. However, as pressure
mounts for the federal government to look into what many
now see as a miscarriage of justice, how many more Oscar
Grants will there be in the Black community as increasingly
militarized police forces continue to excuse what they call
“justifiable homicide?”

On one hand, African Americans have excelled to levels
never before imaginable – culminating with the election of
President Barack Obama. But as Black business and political
leaders continue to crack the proverbial ceiling, unfathomable
inequities permeate around the country. Until we see a level
playing field that truly grants everyone access to equal
education, health care, housing, employment and liberty and
freedom, we must march on.
In the struggle for basic human rights, there are – and
always will be – opponents and roadblocks along the way.
As we gather on the anniversary of MLK’s ‘I Have a Dream’
speech on Aug. 28th, right-wing TV and talk show pundit
Glenn Beck will be convening conservative Republican and
Tea Party folks at the Lincoln Memorial. But while Beck and
those supporting him attempt to highjack the dream, we will
drown out their vitriol with the call for freedom, equality and
justice. Beck has dubbed his Aug. 28th event as ‘Restoring
Honor,’ but it is precisely the opposite. Insulting the memory
and legacy of our nation’s greatest civil rights leader, Beck
proves yet again that he is an advocate for division and an
opponent of progress. We cannot be sidetracked by this
negativity and by those whose only purpose is to garner higher
ratings.
Join us on Aug. 28th as we RECLAIM THE DREAM for
everyone in a peaceful, non-violent fashion – just as MLK
would have wanted us to do on this 47th historic anniversary.

In my own review of online responses to the failure
of H.R. 4213 in the Senate, I’ve found posts that describe
the unemployed as “losers” and “lazy.” At the same time,
many of our unemployed brothers and sisters have posted
poignant accounts of what their lives are like after they
have lost their job, of making choices to feed children or
spend money on transportation for job search, of adjusting
expectations downward, of applying for positions for which
they are overqualified, only to be rejected because they are
overqualified.
And Orrin Hatch wants to impose drug testing. When the
United States Senate turns its backs on unemployed citizens to
play partisan games who should really be drug tested?
There is the possibility that the Senate will reconsider the
unemployment extension, perhaps passing it as a stand-alone
bill, but they made no commitment after last Thursday’s vote.
If unemployed people would share their ire with the Senate,
perhaps these folks would understand. For the moment, though,
they have thumbed their noses at the nation’s unemployed. In
doing so, they’ve made it clear who really needs drug testing.

Baltimore Preps for Annual

Celebration of the Arts

As Baltimore residents continue to participate in the wide-
range of events scheduled this summer, a unique celebration of
the arts is making its annual return to Charm City.
Artscape is annual festival celebrating all things art. Often
hailed as the country’s largest free arts festival, the event is a
mash up of various visual art exhibits, family activities, fashion
exhibits, musical performances and more.
The 29th annual Artscape Festival — the largest of its type
in America — will feature several new elements this year,
including a three-day series of cutting-edge demonstrations
and workshops focused on experimental technology. The new
component, BetaScape, offers vendors a gaming hall to create
their own circuits and see a plethora of robots.
In addition, the festival will introduce LOL@Artscape
featuring some of the country’s most popular comedians.
Funnyman Jason Weems hosts the inaugural program.
Kicking off on July 16, the event will feature the work of
over 150 artists including fashion designers, craftspeople and
painters throughout the weekend until the
event’s conclusion on July 18. Attendees will
have the opportunity to view the work of these
local and national artists and purchase many
of their showcased items.
The event will also feature three outdoor
stages with a full schedule of performers
throughout the weekend. This year’s event
will feature performances by R&B singer
Musiq, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra,
and D.C. rapper Wale, among many other
performances.

Young CEO Inspires with Children’s Book

Seth Fowler, a young
writer, Morehouse College
student, and teenage CEO, has
had a lifelong passion for art.
Even as a child Fowler spent
hours drawing and doodling
intricate designs – a gift that
was not lost on his father,
Paul.
After Fowler’s dad
recognized the extent of his
son’s abilities, he encouraged
Seth to craft a story around
some of his favorite
illustrations. At 9 years old,
Seth completed Cory the
Popcorn’s Big Adventure,
a colorful, adventure-laden
children’s book.
Seth and his father felt
they’d crafted a powerful
project that taught children to
overcome life’s difficulties,
combat bullies and treat
others with respect. According
to the author, the book also
helps “strengthen bonds
between parents and children
by sharing a bedtime story.”
The duo spent years
refining and editing the book
and began introducing the
work to different publishers.
During this time, the father-
son team met with Erick Lina,
a California-based Barnes &
Noble store manager, who
helped shape the final product.
With Lina’s assistance, the
book was submitted to Barnes
& Noble and was selected to
be part of the children’s book
family.

Tavis Smiley: In an Introspective Mood

From his celebrated conversations with world figures, to his
work to inspire the next generation of leaders, as a broadcaster,
author, advocate and philanthropist, Tavis Smiley continues to
be an outstanding voice for change. He is currently the host of
the late night television talk show “Tavis Smiley” on PBS and
“The Tavis Smiley Show” on Public Radio International (PRI).
Time magazine honored Smiley in 2009 as one of “The
World’s 100 Most Influential People.” The Smiley Group
(TSG) is a communications corporation established in support
of human rights and related empowerment issues. TSG
serves as the holding company for various enterprises
encompassing broadcast and print media, lectures,
symposiums and the Internet.
Here, Tavis talks about “Been in the Storm Too
Long,” a special report on the city of New Orleans
airing on PBS on July 21. He also speaks about the
“On Your Side Tour with Tavis Smiley,” a series of
free financial empowerment workshops he’s staging
in various cities around the country between now and
the end of 2010.
KW: Since you were born in Gulfport,
Miss., I have to first ask you what you
think about the Gulf oil spill?
TS: I was just down there for about
a week. We’re working on the third
installment of “Tavis Smiley Reports.”
KW: “Been in the Storm to Long.”
TS: Yeah, exactly. In addition to
my late night show, we’re doing four
primetime specials this year, one
every quarter. And it seemed obvious
that in the third quarter it needed to be
about the fifth anniversary of Katrina.
I’m doing this one in conjunction with
Academy Award-winner Jonathan
Demme who is actually directing it.
KW: So, how’re things down there?
TS: It’s hard to find the language
to describe what it’s like when you see
it in person. It is horrific, and there are a lot
of questions we’re going to have to address
once we get on the other side of this crisis. I
recently had the former president of Shell Oil, John
Hofmeister, as a guest on my TV show. He has a
powerful, new book out called, Why We Hate the
Oil Companies. We had a really,

happened, what President Obama ought to be doing, what
BP ought to be doing, and how we can insure that this never
happens again. It was a fascinating conversation. Still, when
you see it in person, it’s horrific, for lack of a better term. It’s
a major, major crisis, and I’m just sorry that the White House
was a little slow moving on this, initially. But now, it seems
like they’re fully engaged. So, I hope we can turn the corner on
this disaster. We’ll see.
KW: Larry Greenberg says, “I’ve seen you bring together
forces that I could never imagine at the same table. Is it the
power of love or diplomacy that you have harnessed?” I
think he might be referring to the Black Agenda Summit you
convened in Chicago this Spring.
TS: Yeah, I hope it’s both. I love people, and I believe that
diplomacy is a valuable tool in one’s arsenal. But beyond
me, it’s about the people I invite. The people who are
interested in engaging in discourse about making America
better. In that regard, it’s not like I did something
magical, you ask the right people, and they tend to show
up. So, it’s about outreach. I can honestly say that while
those forums are monumental and take a lot of
work and energy to organize and pull
off, I’d be lying if I said I had to twist
anybody’s arm to be there.
KW: The bookworm Troy
Johnson question: What was the last
book you read?
TS: A book by Tim Wise called
Colorblind: The Rise of Post-
Racial Politics and the Retreat
from Racial Equality. It’s a great
book.
KW: When you look in the
mirror, what do you see?
TS: That’s a powerful
question, Kam. To be honest
with you, I see someone
who’s struggling every
day to get it right. What I
mean by that is sometimes
you work really hard, and
you look at everything
you’re up against in the
culture, in the society, in the
economy, and in the body
politic, and sometimes it feels
like you’re just spinning your
wheels. So, I wake up every day,
not depressed, but burdened by
something, yet excited about
making a contribution. It’s a
struggle.

would that be for?
TS: The end of poverty, because with that there are so many
issues that we struggle with that would immediately disappear.
If we could eradicate poverty, the world would be a whole lot
better place to live.

Wizards’ Wall Impresses in NBA Summer Debut

NBA associates will be the first to caution about not getting
overly excited with summer league performances. But the hype
surrounding Washington Wizards’ top selection John Wall would
garner praise if the rookie merely flashed his signature muscle-
flexing dance in front of TV cameras. So after the Wizards’ new
point guard exploded for 24 points and eight assists in his summer
debut on July 11, we should expect the hype to continue - at least
until his next game.
The 19-year-old bounced back from some early game jitters
to lead Washington to an 84-79 victory over the Golden State
Warriors. Although Warriors forward Reggie Williams led all
scorers with 34 points, Wall led all players in camera time, crowd
reaction and name references.
In front of a packed house at Las Vegas’ Cox Pavilion, Wall
showcased the trademark speed and quickness that impressed NBA
scouts during his lone season at the University of Kentucky. He
attacked the rim relentlessly—shooting 11 free throws—charged
down the court on fast breaks and got everyone involved from his
teammates to the baseline camera crew.

And Wall did finish the night with eight turnovers, a trend that
plagued him at times last year at Kentucky. But when he wasn’t
turning the ball over, Wall was busy being an absolute force on the
offensive end.
“You better get back because he’s as fast as anybody I’ve seen,”
former Georgetown coach John Thompson said in a televised
interview.
Wall and Wizards center JaVale McGee hooked up three times
for alley-oops with McGee on the receiving end on each occasion.
McGee finished with 21 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks,
pairing with the highly-touted rookie to give the Wizards’ coaching
staff a foundation to work with for the rest of the week-long
exhibition.
“I felt good,” Wall said about his first ever NBA action. “After
my jitters got away, I started playing and finding my teammates and
I think I had a great performance.”
Before the start of the game, Wall teased onlookers with a
few windmill dunks. His first shot of the game was a fadeaway
that clanged hard off the glass before bouncing against the rim.
Wall then sprinted down court a few moments later and dazzled
the crowd with a spin move but his layup was pinned against the
backboard by Golden State’s Williams.
When asked about his eight turnovers, Wall responded with:
“I’ll go back and watch a little bit of tape and I’ll do better
tomorrow.”

‘At-Risk’ Youth

Middle Grades Partnership
(MGP) enrichment programs
have been making a
difference in the lives of over
500 Baltimore City public
school students a year since
2005. But it wasn’t until
recently that MGP was able to
measure its success.
On June 25 Johns Hopkins
University released a study
showing that students
participating in MGP have
higher attendance rates,
demonstrate better reading
and math skills, and are five
times more likely to qualify
for competitive high schools
than other Baltimore City
school students. “Before MGP
I didn’t care about school,”
said MGP student D’Andrea
Roberts. “But now I do.”

include providing students
the reading and writing
skills needed to excel in
the 21st century through
individualized attention.

students’ strengths and
weaknesses while teaching
for maximum student learning
across cultural boundaries.
“This is not a remediation
program,” said MGP
Executive Director Beth
Casey. “We’re targeting
kids who the principals and
teachers believe should be on
a path to send to college. The
first step along the way is an
academically enriching high
school.”
For MGP participants,
Casey said MGP eliminates
the “summer slide.” Student
achievement levels drop over
the course of middle school,
and the summer break is a
heavy contributing factor. “A
kid can have a great year but
then take a three-month break
and come back and not do so
well,” she said. “They are at
risk for falling off.”
Casey said almost all MGP
students live in low-income
neighborhoods, over 90
percent come from single or
no-parent homes, receive free
or reduced lunch, and nearly
half have a friend in a gang.
But, on average, MGP kids
miss six days of school a year,
whereas other BCPS students
miss an average of 18 days.
All MGP students are
selected for the program by
their teachers or principal
after completing fifth grade
due to scoring proficient on
exams, having a “B” average
and strong family support.
“MGP makes learning fun,”
said Malcolm Neeley, a MGP
student. “It’s better than
staying home or sitting out on
the street in the summer. Plus,
it keeps our skills up over the
summer.”
Adds Sabriaya Shipley,
who will be a ninth-grader at
the Institute of Notre Dame
in the fall: “I am happy that

the most popular sports
in the African-American
community, but even the
casual baseball fan would
tell you they’re well familiar
with the success of the New
York Yankees. And the
reason why the Yankees are
so popular in U.S. sports is
due to the dedicated services
of longtime team principal
owner George Steinbrenner,
who died from a massive
heart attack on July 13.
According to The
Associated Press,
Steinbrenner had a heart
attack at his home in Tampa,
Fla., was taken to St. Joseph’s
Hospital, and died at about
6:30 a.m. In more than
37 years as owner of the
Yankees, Steinbrenner led
them to seven World Series
championships, 11 American
League pennants and 16 AL
East titles.
“He was and always
will be as much of a New
York Yankee as Babe Ruth,
Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio
Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra,
Whitey Ford and all of the
other Yankee legends,” MLB
commissioner Bud Selig
told reporters. “Although we
would have disagreements
over the years, they never
interfered with our friendship
and commitment to each
other. Our friendship was
built on loyalty and trust and
it never wavered.”
Steinbrenner’s death,
which came on the day of
the MLB All-Star game, was
the second death of a famous
Yankee in less than a week.
Bob Sheppard, the team’s
legendary public address
announcer for 56 years, died
at age 99 on July 11.
Steinbrenner headed a
group that purchased the
Yankees for about $10 million
in 1973; according to Forbes,
the team’s net worth now
stands at $1.6 billion.
The longtime Yankees
owner was known for his
hands-on style of managing
the team, which is rare
for most sports franchise
owners. Often cited as a
micro-managing dictator,
Steinbrenner closely
supervised every business
aspect of the Yankees, from
free agent/trade operations
to roster/depth chart
management. He was literally

A panel of medical experts confirmed that South African
track champion Caster Semenya is not a man.
The athlete’s gender was called into question after taking
home a gold medal for winning the 800-meter dash at the
world championships in Berlin almost a year ago. The wide
time lapse between Semenya and the other runners, along
with her masculine appearance and deep voice prompted
a lengthy investigation. The International Association of
Athletics Federation has been investigating her case for the
past 10 months through intrusive sex tests.
“The process initiated in 2009 in the case of Caster
Semenya has now been completed,” the organization
said in a statement on its Web site. “The IAAF accepts
the conclusion of a panel of medical experts that she can
compete with immediate effect. Please note that the medical
details of the case remain confidential and the IAAF will
make no further comment on the matter.”
The July 6 announcement sparked a celebration in South
Africa, where Semenya grew up in a small village without
electricity or
plumbing.

Former University of Kentucky basketball player Melvin
Turpin died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a
coroner’s report.
Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn released a report to the
media on July 9 stating that Turpin took his own life, but didn’t
explain how. No other information about the investigation was
released.
Turpin played for Kentucky from 1980 to ’84, becoming a first
team all conference player in 1982 and 1983 as also helped lead
Kentucky to the NCAA Final Four his senior season.
He was drafted sixth overall by the Washington Bullets in the
1984 NBA Draft and was immediately traded to the Cleveland
Cavaliers.
Despite his success at Kentucky, Turpin struggled with his
weight in the NBA, and after five seasons with the Cavaliers, Utah
Jazz and the Bullets, he retired.
Earning nicknames such as “Dinner Bell Mel” and “The
Mealman,” Turpin was considered one of the worst selections from
a draft class that included future greats such as Hakeem Olajuwon,
Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and John Stockton.

Under supervision of the Chief, HR, the Volunteer Activities Coordinator recruits, orients,
