Disciplinary Journal:

Persat, Alexandre, Carey D. Nadell, Minyoung Kevin Kim, Francois Ingremeau, Albert
Siryaporn, Knut Drescher, Ned S. Wingreen, Bonnie L. Bassler, Zemer Gitai, and
Howard A. Stone. "The Mechanical World of Bacteria." Cell 161.5 (2015): 988-97. Web.

Critical Summary: This journal is basically about how Bacteria adapt to their environment.
With that being said the article further explains how some bacteria have to develop flagellum for
multiple purposes. The main purpose for the flagellum to be able to move through environments
that are dominated by viscosity. It was interesting reading about how most bacteria that are found
in like the ocean, they live on the surface. They live on the surface because they dont have that
flagellum adaptation like other bacteria in other environments. The most interesting this in this
article was about the biofilms. That is when the bacteria adhere together. The purpose of them
adhering together in this reading, was for them to stay in place when currents or waved come
near. Most of the time they form flow over biofilms, but they can also use topology to form
biofilms. Overall the various writers of this journal did a wonderful job of displaying the studied
information in this journal. It was an easy read.
Article: Phages Carry Antibiotic Resistance Genes
Importance of Article: This article basically talks about how the phages are resistant to
antibiotics. This could be a big lead in the medical field. It would allow for doctors to use
bacteriophages for treatment since they are numerous and they wont get killed off by antibiotics.

Critical Terms:
Biology- the study of life
Cell- the smallest fundamental unit of structure and function in living things
Evolution- the change overtime in the genes of species
Adaptation the process of acclimatizing or getting used to the habitat or environment
Theory- well tested explanation that unifies a broad range of observations
Metabolism- the combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or
breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes
Homeostasis- the process by which organisms must keep internal conditions, such as temperature
and water content, fairly constant to survive
Photosynthesis- process by which some plants and some other organisms use light energy to
convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high- energy carbohydrates such as sugars and
starches.
Biomass- the total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level.
Chemosynthesis- the process when organism use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates.

Field Opportunities:
1.SHPEP- The application opens up in November and closes in March. SHPEP stands for
summer health professions education program. This program is designed to give freshman and
sophomore minorities students to go to different sites and do different research and gain clinical
experience and hours.
2. Undergraduate Assistant for PHAGES- With this lab you will be required to work at least ten
hours a week. You will be doing multiple task to prepare the lab for the week as well as assisting
the students that are in the class.
3. MHIRT- This is a research program that takes its participants to Africa to do different medical
research. It stands for Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training
Program. One of the places that it takes its participants to is Ethiopia. In Ethiopia they will
collect sand flies and mosquitoes and then extract DNA from them. The DNA extracted is used
to see what type of bacteria lives inside the insects.

Undergraduate Organizations or Honor Societies:

1.Beta Kappa Chi- The purpose of BKX is to encourage and advance scientific education
through original investigation, the dissemination of scientific knowledge; and the stimulation of
high scholarship in pure and applied science. The society was founded at Lincoln University by a
biologist, a chemist, and a mathematician. I currently do not know of any of their activities.
2.GlobeMed- The purpose is to connect the assets of a student-led network to grassroots health
organizations working in communities around the world by inspiring and training university
students to mobilize resources for global health. They usually have different events going on
through out the week.

Style Guide:
For Biology majors we use MLA format. For MLA formatting you find the page number at the
top following your last name. The title should be placed on the top of the page underneath the
header. The only time you will need to use a title page is when you are creating a lab report.
