Grade Level: 2nd grade School Site: Triggs Elementary

1. State Standard(s): RL.2.7 - Use information gained from the

illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate
understanding of its characters, setting, or plots.

2. Teaching Model(s):
-Whole group, partner talk and independent work

3. Objective(s):

-SW compare and contrast two versions of the same story

-SW explain how characters respond to challenges
-SW describe how pictures help to understand character, setting and
plot

4. Materials and Technology Resources:

Fairy tale stores
Promethean board
Tree map
Pencil

5. Instructional Procedures:

Motivation/Engagement:

Ask students the Essential Question: How can reading and

comparing different versions of the same story deepen a
reader's understanding of the text, including the narrative
structures and story elements? Discuss the BIG IDEA:
Identifying similarities in and differences between different
versions of the same story helps a reader see patterns and
make connections. A reader's understanding is strengthened
when new information is processed and recalled through text-
to-text connections, and connected to previous experiences
and knowledge.

Developmental Activities or Learning Experiences:

1. Have students take out their tree map of the original

Three Little Pigs story that was read yesterday to be
able to refer to it today.
2. Then, read the second version of the story "The
Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark" by Ken Geist:

3. Stop while reading and ask questions about
characters, setting, plot, problem, solution and how
characters react to challenges. Use Timed-Pair-Share
to discuss before calling on students for an answer.
4. When done reading, create a tree map on board (or
use a copy placed under the elmo). Students will
record important information about characters,
setting, and problem/solution on their own tree map.
5. Hand up, stand up, pair up to discuss similarities and
differences in the stories.
6. Come together to create a class comparison of the
two stories (Venn Diagram).

Closure: Have students write one similarity sentence and

one difference sentence about the two stories.

Extension: N/A

6. Accommodations, Modifications and Differentions for Diverse

Learners:
N/A

7. Assessment and Evaluation of Learning:

Formative: N/A

Summative: Ability to retell, answer questions about text &

illustrations, compare/contrast the two stories

8. Homework Assignment: N/A

9. Reflection:
Strengths: A strength in this lesson is using the timed pair
share and hand up, stand up, pair up to have students discuss
story elements. I think this is so much better than calling on
individual students after reading the story because everyone is
engaged and has a chance to orally discuss the book.

Concerns: Im concerned that the students havent had a

chance to fill out a Venn diagram for themselves yet. Today was
my day to model it for them and Im just anxious to see how they
will do on their own the next few days!

Insights: I really want to do a game with them sometime before

the test with their vocabulary words because I think it would be
beneficial and more engaging than just reviewing the words at
the beginning of the lesson!
