A summary of "What Makes Effective Teachers Effective?"

An article titled "What Makes Effective Teachers Effective" by James H. Stronge and
Xianxuan tells that effective teacher must have these three skills and practices: Instructional
Planning, Instructional delivery and assessments and gives procedures on how to follow these
practices inside the classroom.

In instructional planning, teachers are required to have planning in their minds. They
must be well prepared with teaching strategies and have plans to implement them effectively in
the classroom. Their planning must ensure students learning in the classroom.

In Instructional delivery, teachers must be a good speaker to instruct students. The

performance of the students depends upon the teacher's clarity of the instructions. If students are
able to understand teacher they can follow and can reach teacher's expectation and do their
assignments and show their progress.

Assessment is important to know about the understanding of the students. By giving

assessment we can be able to trace students and know their confusion and understanding. It helps
teachers to know what students have not understood and can help teacher to focus more on the
parts students are confused.

Effective teachers need to plan first, and then be able to deliver the instructions and
assess students to work. They have a job of helping students who need a lot of guidance and
assess them in a different way. Communication is a key part to be an effective teacher. He/she
must be able to recognize students which can help to deal with the students. In conclusion,
authors say "There is no single teacher attribute we can point to and say, If a teacher has quality
X. then she will be an effective teacher". Thus, it is an effort of a teacher on the classrooms to
show their effectiveness and enhance effective teaching.

An Evaluation and reflection of "What Makes Effective Teachers Effective?"

This article has helped me to focus on trying to learn more about effective teaching and
being an effective teacher in future. I have known that as an individual, each teacher have
different ways and styles of teaching. Also, knowing that teacher have responsibility for student
achievement I will try to use various skills and if I do not know I can learn to do that for the
success of the students in the classroom. I learned that lesson planning is one of the foremost
skill that a teacher must have. I have struggled a lot in making lesson plans but if I compare it
with the past, I think I have learned more on how to write lesson plans more effectively. On
delivery, I learned that different teachers have different ways of delivering the subject matter
based on what they have gone through when they were in schools. I can see that same thing on
me as well. First, I did not think about the PowerPoint presentation for my classroom based on
my schooling but later on my teaching I decided to try PowerPoint presentation and it helped me
to give more focus on the students and help them understand well.

I have known that assessment is important to know how much students have understood.
I think during my practicum, I did assessment and new exactly what students knew and do not. I
will use assessment as resource to help me know if my students are understanding me or not. If
not, I will try to use other methods of teaching for the achievement of my student.

Knowing more of what effective teachers must do in the classroom, I will assess my
students regularly and see how I can help them. Besides having the three skills of teaching I
think our dispositions is very important for students. I will try to shape their behavior by being a
good teacher in character.
