What is a hazardous area?
A hazardous area is a place where concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or dusts occur.
Electrical equipment installed in these environments is specifically designed and tested to ensure
they dont initiate an explosion caused by arcing contacts or high surface temperature of equipment.
step
The hazard level of the gases and dusts increases from gas groups IIA to IIC
and dust groups IIIA to IIIC/ The most severe in both cases being IIC and IIIC
2
STEP 2: What type of zone?
2
Examples of hazardous area zones
step
Zone 0
Zone 1
Zone 2
Zone Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is continuously present or present for long
0 periods
Zone Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is likely to occur for short periods in normal
1 operation
Zone Area in which an explosive gas-air mixture is not likely to occur, and if it occurs it will
2 only exist for a very short time due to an abnormal condition
Zone 20
Zone 21
Zone 22
DUST
Zone Area in which an explosive dust-air mixture is continuously present or present for long
20 periods
Zone Combustible or conductive dusts are present and is likely to occur for short periods in
21 normal operation
Zone Area in which an explosive dust mixture is not likely to occur, and if it occurs it will only
22 exist for a very short time due to an abnormal condition

Types of protection
To protect installations from potential explosion a method of analysing and classifying a
potentially hazardous area is required
This is to ensure correct selection and installation of equipment to prevent explosion and
ensure safety of life.

HAE Certified IEC Ex workshop:
NHP supplies not only the Cortem range of hazardous area equipment, but
equally important, customer specific systems via our assembly workshop
located at our National Distribution and Manufacturing Centre in Melbourne.
In this workshop, accredited staff design, construct and inspect the Cortem
range according to the requirements of IECEx certification. It allows for
flexibility to produce custom solutions to suit your HAE requirements
including:
The NHPEx workshop enables both expeditious and effective solutions for
customers and operates under stringent quality assurance guidelines.
