MSK's pedagogical profile
The pedagogical profile is created by
The students - their background and expectations
The policy driven framework for the education - Orders and Appropriations
The physical environment - buildings, premises, equipment
The teachers - their experience as well as professional and pedagogical competence
The expectations of the companies and institutions that engage marine and technical engineers

MSK has chosen to associate these five areas in the pedagogical profile, which forms the basis for
development through the education and the school's choice of teaching methods.

The profile is based on the concept of "professional bachelor", which denotes that the marine and technical
engineering programme is built on a practice-oriented foundation, where the students prior to the study or
through the workshop course have acquired a practical approach to - and foundation for - many of the
disciplines on which the training develops further. This foundation is built upon through the study.

There is therefore progression through the study, where in the first semesters teaching and learning is
undertaken of specific subjects and with learning of basic methodology and knowledge. Through the
semesters the learning process develops more towards seeking an overall perspective, interdisciplinary and
holistic view and not least the independent processing of the material, with the objective that the individual
marine and technical engineering student is able to use his/her professionalism in a broader context, where
concepts such as management, responsibility, development and innovation become important parts of the
work situation.

The teaching methods develop similarly from the more typical classroom instruction and work assignment in
the first semesters with the teacher as lecturer and assigner, towards a greater degree of independent study
with exercises and project assignments, where the teacher's role changes towards tutor, to finally at the end of
the study becoming actual project work - the bachelor project, where each student is responsible for their own
specialization and learning, with the teacher as a tutor and support.

With implementation of the teaching, the school seeks to organize courses so as to cater for a spread of
learning styles and learning needs of the individual students. This is achieved by the continuous development
of the pedagogical principles, by development work and by supplementary training of the teaching staff.

Following on from the teaching there is a corresponding development in tests and examinations, where in the
first part of the study, evaluation of the students is carried out by written or oral examinations for the individual
discipline - based on the relevant syllabus for the subject. Later it will be more about forms of examination,
where holistic understanding will be tested e.g., by project work as a basis for examination.

Forms of learning
The pedagogical profile is implemented in practice by the following forms of teaching and learning:

Classroom teaching
Group instruction with limited group size.
Teacher guided review and putting theory into perspective as well as examples in the application of this.

Workshop traineeship
Practical tasks in basic practical disciplines relevant to the marine and technical engineering profession. These
tasks are important in that the student can develop his/her understanding of crafts relevant to the marine and
technical engineer as well as being able to assess the quality of workmanship.

Compulsory assignments
Selected assignments that are completed individually or in groups. The assignments can be included as part
of the examination and are a prerequisite of sitting an examination.

Laboratory work
Practical exercises and simulator training that can be reported on as compulsory assignments. The laboratory
work is an important pedagogical element in the understanding of theory and its context with practice.

Project work
Major assignments that are planned and implemented individually or in groups of 2-4 students. The project
work is undertaken with guidance from one or more teachers. The project work is reported in writing and can
be included as part of the examination or be a prerequisite of sitting an examination.
Projects can be either anchored in a discipline or be interdisciplinary.

Self-study
The marine and technical engineering study is organized with self-study within defined areas. These areas are
part of the syllabus and are included in the same way as other material in examinations and tests.

Guidance
The students can ask the teachers for points of clarification during their office hours.

Study tours - excursions

In visits involving companies and on study tours, practice is tied together with the theoretical part of the
training.
Study tours are compulsory.
Students should expect some expenditure for study tours and excursions.

Guest teachers
The school makes use of guest teachers and lecturers to supplement the academic background that the
school's own teachers can offer and to bring the profession into the training programme.

Placement

For students admitted in accordance with point 1 of Admission requirements, unpaid placement is included in
V2 and V3 corresponding to 45 ECTS.

Approval of placement at shore-based companies, after completion of the workshop training school, is based
on assessment of the student's placement report. A logbook shall be kept during the stay.
Approval of placement at sea is based on a completed training record book and the undertaking of related
assignments.

During V1-V2, the student shall choose a placement company which MSK must approve, and an agreement is
to be established between the company, the student and MSK regarding the work placement.

For students admitted in accordance with point 1 and point 2 of Admission requirements, unpaid profession-
based placement is included in M6 corresponding to 15 ECTS.
Approval of profession-based placement in shore-based companies is based on assessment of the student's
placement report or an article written by the student. A logbook shall be kept during the stay.
Approval of profession-based placement at sea is based on a completed training record book and the
undertaking of related assignments.

During the 5th semester, the student shall him/herself chose and apply to a placement company which MSK
must approve, and an agreement is to be established between the company, the student and MSK regarding
the work placement.

Description of the process relating to work placement after completion of workshop training school
and profession-based placement:

In the second half of V1 and at the beginning of M5, MSK's placement coordinator initiates a series of
meetings with the group, where the students are informed of the course of the placement and the
application process.
During V1-V2 workshop training school placement and M5 for professional-based placement, the
student chooses a placement company either via the school's list of approved companies or via the
Internet, trade journals, own contacts or similar.
If the placement company is not approved, MSK's placement coordinator shall ensure its approval as
per MSK's specified criteria (see Quality Management System)

Bachelor project

During the 6th semester, the student shall undertake a bachelor project (15 ECTS). The bachelor project can
take place in a company approved by MSK.

The student shall acquire a special insight in a topic, area or problem and shall through the project work, learn
systematic problem formulation and problem processing, as well as collection and analysis of data material,
including relevant results from development work.

At the end of the 5th semester, MSK appoint a placement/project guide for the student. This guide is MSK's
contact person for the company and the student. The placement/project guide is the student's guide during the
course of the 6th semester.

In assessing, a grade is given based on the 7-point scale, the assessment pass/fail or the assessment
approved/not approved.

Grades based on the 7-point scale are used for the bachelor project and normally in written and oral
examinations and tests
Pass/fail is normally used for practical tests or for courses that are solely assessed on the basis of one
or more submitted assignments
Approved/not approved is normally used in the assessment of participation in the teaching and
assessment of placement

Pass criteria
Each subject shall be passed. If several examinations/tests are held in a subject, the tests must be passed
individually. If both oral and written examination/test are held in a subject (e.g., electro technology in M2), both
examinations shall be passed in the same examination period.

Compulsory assignments must be submitted and approved to be able to sit the examination.

An examination/test is passed if the student achieves the assessment 02 or above, or the assessment
pass/approved.

A combination of tests are passed if the student achieves 02 or above, or the assessment pass/approved in
each individual test.

Examinations/tests that have been passed cannot be retaken.

Examinations in V1 and V2 shall be passed before placement can commence.

V3 shall be passed before 1st semester can commence.

Examination in thermal plant and machinery and electro technology in 1st semester shall be passed, before
2nd semester can commence.
Examination in thermal plant and machinery and electro technology in 2nd semester shall be passed, before
3rd semester can commence.

Re-examination

Students who do not pass the normal examination/test in Thermal Plant and Machinery and/or Electro
Technology in 1st, 2nd or 3rd semester or the Authorization Test in 4th semester, will be able to register for a re-
examination.

Re-examination is held

for examinations in the spring semester; in the month of August or September in the following
semester
for examinations in the autumn semester; before the end of the month of February of the following
semester

The school shall provide grounds for refusal of a student's request to participate in a re-examination e.g., due
to lack of study activity.

Students who do not pass the normal examination/test in subjects that do not prevent admission to the next
semester, are advised to register for the next normal examination/test.

In cases where a student does not pass a subject, where the assessment is based on projects, reports,
practical tasks or similar, the examiner determines if the assessment at the re-examination or the next normal
examination/test shall be based on the original material, or whether the student shall submit new or revised
material.

Illness at examination
A student, who due to illness is unable to participate in an examination, shall notify the school no later than at
the commencement of the examination. The student shall within one week after the date of the examination,
submit a medical certificate to the school.

A student, who is ill at the normal examination/test, can register for a re-examination, if one is held.

If a re-examination is not held, the student is advised to register for the next normal examination/test.

Examination attempts
A student can enter 3 times for examination/test in one subject. If there are special circumstances, there can
upon application be granted an exemption for a 4th and optionally a 5th attempt. Application for exemption is
dealt with by the student advisor.

Registration for normal examination
When a student is entered on the class list as a participant in a subject, the student is automatically registered
for normal examination/test in that subject.

The class lists of registrations for examinations are displayed from approx. middle of the semester on the
notice board across from the administration office. It is the student's own responsibility to check that they have
been registered for the correct examinations.

If a student does not want to sit the normal examination/test for which he/she has been registered, this shall be
notified in writing to the school's administration office.

The deadline for withdrawal from an examination/test is no later than the last teaching day of the semester.
For the electrical authorization test, the deadline for withdrawal is the week day before the test.
If withdrawal from examination/test does not occur or occurs after the stated deadline, the test counts as one
of the three allowable examination attempts.

It is not possible to opt out of examinations/tests in V1, V2 and M1.

Registration for examination due to illness/re-examination

Registration for examination due to illness/re-examination is made by completing a registration form at the
study guidance office. It is notified via Campusnet when examination due to illness/re-examination is to be
held and the final date for registration.

If a student does not register for examination due to illness/re-examination by the final date for registration,
he/she cannot sit the re-examination.
If the particular examination is a stop-test, the consequence of failure to register for re-examination is that the
semester shall be repeated.

Complaints about examination, test or assessment
A complaint must be submitted in writing. The complainant shall specify and justify the grievances.

A complaint, relating to an examination or a test, including the questions posed, or assignments compared to
the syllabus' learning objectives, shall be submitted to MSK's management within a week after the examination
or test has been held.
A complaint relating to the basis of the assessment shall be lodged within a week after the assessment has
been published.

Leave of absence
Leave of absence from the training programme may be granted if it is justified by childbirth, adoption,
documented illness, military service, UN service or other similar factors.

Approval of training at other educational institution
Modules that are completed in accordance with the Order on the marine and technical engineering
programme, culminating in passing an examination or test at one of the other marine and technical
engineering schools in Denmark, will be approved.
As agreed between approved marine and technical engineering schools in Denmark, the students can, without
it resulting in an extension of the study period, transfer to another marine and technical engineering school
after V3.

Modules or training at other Danish educational institutions, culminating in the passing of an examination or
test, may be approved based on an individual evaluation. The evaluation is carried out by the student advisor
at MSK.

Modules or training at institutions abroad, culminating in an examination, may be approved based on an

individual evaluation. The evaluation is carried out by the Danish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Higher
Education

Quality assurance
The students' evaluation of the teaching

Approval of the syllabi

At its first meeting of each semester, the Board of Studies for the marine and technical engineering
programme approves the syllabi for each semester

Continuous evaluation
It is each teacher's responsibility to ensure that the students continuously evaluate the teaching, for
the purpose of adjustment to the teaching method

Formalized evaluation
In approx. the 8th week of training of the semester, an evaluation of the teaching is undertaken in each
subject.

This evaluation forms the basis for a dialogue between teacher and student for the purpose of
improving the effectiveness of the learning.

The evaluation and the following stages are undertaken in accordance with Procedure for evaluation
of the teaching (see Quality Management System).

MSK's evaluation of the course of study

Continuous evaluation
The course of study is discussed at regular meetings of the semester team. The students' midway
evaluation of the teaching is processed by the semester team.

Final evaluation
Immediately after the end of each semester, the course and the tests and examinations undertaken
are evaluated by the semester teams as well as the Board of Studies for the marine and technical
engineering programme.
This evaluation forms the basis for adjustment to the syllabus.

Study regulations and code of conduct
The school has the overall responsibility for the organization and planning of the training programme. The
framework for teaching at the school is specified in Orders from the Ministry of Education and the Danish
Maritime Authority.

The actual teaching is organized by the teachers on the basis of the Order and curriculum. Teaching and
course plans are prepared in collaboration with the student representatives on the Board of Studies

Code of conduct
The following general rules of conduct apply,
Food must not be consumed in classrooms, while teaching is in progress
Food and drinks are not allowed in the databar and laboratories
The students are responsible for ensuring that the classrooms are left tidy at the end of the day's
teaching. This involves:
a. Waste is placed in waste bins
b. Chairs put in place
c. Windows and exterior doors closed and lights turned off
The school's furniture and equipment shall be treated with care
Tableware from the canteen to be returned to the canteen
Students are liable for damage to the school's property and assets

Study activity
Teaching is generally between the hours of 0800 and 1700. Students shall be available for teaching during this
period. Changes that extend the student's school day are notified at least 1 week beforehand.

If the teacher/teachers deem that the study activity in individual subjects or in general has fallen to
an unacceptable level, the student is invited to a meeting with the student advisor, where the future study
activity is discussed and determined.
If the student after this discussion is not deemed by the individual teacher to exhibit an acceptable level of
study activity, the teacher notifies the student advisor. If the agreement on increased activity is not observed,
the student advisor determines the way forward. Lack of study activity may lead to expulsion from the school,
following a written warning.

Absence due to illness or any other reasons of a longer duration, approx. four days, shall be notified to the
school's study administration on tel. 45257600.

It is the student's duty:

to read personal messages from the school and keep abreast of events on CampusNet and the
school's information board at the entrance area
to participate in tests, annual tests etc. in accordance with the school's regulations
to participate in profession-based excursions, study tours, etc., off-site teaching (e.g. study tours) or
specially organized courses of study as per the school's instructions
to exhibit considerate behaviour towards other students and staff

to exhibit cordial relations towards other students and staff
to keep the school informed of address and telephone number

Requirement for entry to examination

A requirement for entry to examination is that the student has been study active.
If it is specified in the syllabus that the student shall submit a number of compulsory reports, projects or
assignments, it is a requirement for entry to examination that these compulsory assignments are submitted by
the teacher's prescribed deadline.

Definite time-frame for completion of the training programmes.

The theoretical part of the marine and technical engineering study is prescribed as three years. The study
must be completed six years after the start of study.

Sanctions
The school may exclude a student from continuing the education if he/she:
fails to attend lessons
has neglected lessons for a prolonged period and the school, despite making reasonable efforts, has
not been able to contact the student
violates the school's study regulations and code of conduct as well as safety directives
is guilty of a particularly serious offence, undignified behaviour or physically or psychologically harm
others

Students, who do not follow the school's study regulations and code of conduct, can:
be excluded from specific events
be excluded from lessons
lose the right to sit an examination in one or more subjects of the relevant examination period
be expelled or suspended

In cases of violation of the school's study regulations and code of conduct, the school's management
summons the student to a hearing where, in view of the above sanctions, a warning is presented to the
student. Based on the outcome of the hearing and the nature of the incident, the school's management takes a
decision on the warning to be issued. For repeated violations, sanctions are initiated.

For serious violations, the school management can initiate the above sanctions without a hearing or warning.
The students are responsible for their own actions and are subject to the general provisions for compensation.
This means that students are liable for damages if they destroy school property - or anything that belongs to
other students or employees. The same applies, when for instance they are on profession-based excursions,
study tours or similar.
The students are not covered by the school's insurance.
