(Remedial Instruction in English)

Contreras, Jofel

March 2017
I. Rationale

The more you read, the more things you will know- but what will happen to those who

has lack of potential in reading? It is sad to know that there are still lots of students in high

school who have struggles in reading. Is it acceptable to just let them settle on things even there

are still ways to amend their reading problems?

This subject gave us an opportunity to work collaboratively and remediate those students

who has poor reading skills in the area of Cabug-cabug National High School.

As we conducted the remedial teaching program, we expected that those students who

were included in the list of poor readers and undergone the program would gain confidence in

reading and to engulf the gap between a student knows and what he should to know. Aside from

the compliance of our requirements in this subject, the main goal of this program is to let us

apply all the learning that we acquired, on how to handle students with different reading

disabilities and utilize the strategies and approaches we learned for this kind of students.

In order for the Remedial teaching program to be effective, it should be taught by those

who have proper training. Thats why before our deployment we discussed first the possible

attitudes of the students and other topics that would help us in handling remedial classes.

II. Methods

A. Preparation

One week before the deployment, we conducted a reporting sessions which we tackle the

different types of poor readers, what approaches and styles we should use and what are the

appropriate material aids for their levels.

One day before the deployment, we went to our assigned school and had a walk to

familiarize the area where we can conduct our remedial teaching because there no available
rooms for us to utilize. We also looked for their learning resources that can be used and

beneficial to the said program.

B. Deployment

Feb. 7, 2017 is the most awaited day because it is the schedule for our deployment.

Together with our course facilitator, Dr. Christy Basco Agnas, the Head of English department

Mrs. Judy Ann C. Denaga gave her warm welcome and shared her gratitude as Dr. Agnas

introduced the remedial teaching trainers to her. Then she hand us to the Remedial Teacher

Adviser, Ms. Pauline Baarez who has the list of the remedial students

C. The Remedial Teaching Experience

Experience is a comb which nature gives us when we are bald. An experience provides

the things that we do not have. It showers us with ample of learning whether it came from bad or

good experiences. Any type of experience can leave a mark on heart and mind.

We, as remedial trainers made efforts to go beyond our comfort zones through remedial

teaching program which gave us bundle of opportunities to apply the different strategies we have

learned from the subject Remedial Instruction.

During our remedial teaching we gained a lot of experiences and came across different

types of students personalities. We have learned how to manage their individual differences in

diverse situations. This program was beneficial not only to the remedial students but also to us,

remedial trainers.
D. Problems Encountered

1. Availability of the classroom and conduciveness of the place

We allotted time just to find an available place where we can conduct the remedial class

because there is no available classroom and it is such a waste of time. The noise of the bystander

students is one of the reasons why our remedial students were not focusing sometimes. We also

improvised table and chairs for the students where they can make their activity but it is not that

effective because its obvious that they were not comfortable.

2. Time

Time is the major problem we encountered during our remedial teaching program. We

were not able to finish our remedial teaching on time because of the factors like, school

activities, the CCNHS Foundation Day and NCAE. In addition, CAPSU Pontevedra is distant

from Cabug-cabug National High School so we spent half of our time waiting for the vehicle and

for our travel.

3. Unwilling students

Some students are not participative and when it is time for remedial class, they hide or

escaped. Moreover, they have short attention span wherein they divert their attention to other

things and some were not able to attend the remedial class because of their absences.

E. Insight

I have mixed emotions before the day of our first remedial instruction. I was afraid to the

possibility that my students will not show any respect towards me, worried because I know that

my patience is very limited, I doubted myself that I might not be able to teach my students
properly but feeling of excitement is greater compared to others. Finally I can teach real students

and I can now apply my learning. I am also excited to change the life of my students because I

know that reading is a big deal.

My students are Bonbon, Jayson and Angelo. Jayson was absent during our first meeting.

we talked first about our personal lives to make them feel comfortable. I learned that Angelo and

I shared the same address while Bonbon lives on an upland area. They are both nice and they

listened to me attentively.

Our first activity is the Alphabet. I was shocked when Bonbon cant recognize some of the

alphabets but Angelo finished the activity quickly and he also gave another words aside from the

examples given. I was surprised because the words he gave are not common. For example, in the

letter A, he can simply write Ant but he chose the word Actor. It was hard to teach two students

with different learning capacities. I provided Angelo short phrases and let him review it by

himself because we will going to read a context then I gave more focus to Bonbon. I made him

write the alphabet on the index card, he stopped for a while when he reached the F then he wrote

the letter N and the rest of the letters were scrambled. I gave him the copy of the Alphabet so he

can study it for 5 minutes and perfect it. Angelo read the context with few errors. He just had

struggles in pronouncing the words with /TH/ and /PH/ sounds. Bonbon used my entire index

card just by writing the alphabet but he didnt get it correctly. It was almost time so we just sang

the ABC song repeatedly. I told Bonbon that he should perfect the ABC because he will recite

that on our next meeting. They both gave their goodbyes and theres one thing that caught my

attention which made my heart ached. The pair of slippers of Angelo has big holes at the back

and it seems that he was just wearing half of his slippers.

My students have not only learned from me but I also learned a very important lesson
from them. Teaching profession is useless if you do not sympathize, care, and love your students.

You cant influence and change them just by teaching theories but also by knowing them and

letting them know you.

I came from a public elementary school and some of my teachers did not care if my

classmates know how to read or not. They cant even give their spare time to those poor readers.

If my decisions in life will change and I will not be, more interested in leaving this country then I

should pursue my desire in teaching elementary students. My patience is only short for

hardheaded teenagers but I considered my Bonbon, Jayson and Angelo as my cute little pupils.

I think elementary schools need a teacher like me, not because I am good academically but

you cant question my love for children. Someone may possess knowledge or even have

expertise but that does not make them a good teacher. In order for you to become a good teacher,

you should have a big heart that can embrace all your students. I am willing to devote my life to

them even if it requires hiking or boating.

III. Summary

In conducting a remedial class program, we need to consider first the school where there

are lot of students who are poor readers and the teaching materials that will aid trainers in

delivering the lesson.

Moreover, training and prior knowledge is essential in managing the different kinds of

learners that we will possibly encounter during the remedial class program. Teachers should be

equipped with the skills necessary to accomplish the task.

Furthermore, the collaboration between the learners and the trainer is extremely

important. The remedial will only be effective if the students are motivated to learn and the
trainer is eager to impart their knowledge and has long patience in remediating the students.

IV. Conclusion

In conducting a remedial class, our primary goal is to upgrade the reading skills of the

poor readers instead of thinking for our own advantage. It is fulfilling when our students were

learning from us. Once you gave your best in teaching the students and took your part as a trainer

seriously, everything good will follow.

Our experience in remedial teaching will help us to be mature in handling classes and

managing the different characteristics of the learners. In that experience, we both learned and

benefited from each other. It is just a give and take process.

V. Recommendation

Remedial teaching instruction will be more fruitful if all the problems and hindrances

will be addressed. The school should take into account that a remedial class needs a proper and

conducive place where they can conduct the instruction so the learning would more effective and

it will not waste time and effort. In addition, they should orient the students on the benefits that

they will gain when they participate and cooperate in remedial class.

For the CAPSU, teacher education department, you should continue this program because

it will not only benefit the poor readers in high school but also the students of CAPSU who are

aiming to become good teachers.
