In my research there were two main things I focused on.

The first was the requirements

and process of donating a blanket to the NICU. Secondly with the help of my mentor learning the

skills needed to make the blanket.

I learned from the intermountain healthcare website the requirements for the blankets.

42" x 45" single layer flannel blankets with sewn edges. We especially need plain pastel colors.

We cannot accept crocheted edges or red flannel(Primary Childrens). At first the size and

limitation to color was strange to me. The limitation to red was a little weird but it makes sense

becauses it may hide bleeding and the idea color in surroundings having an effect on the

emotional state and development. I also learned when and how to donate the blankets. During

normal business hours, all donations should be delivered to Primary Children's Outpatient

Services building first floor lobby information desk. Donations made after 5 p.m., on weekends,

and on holidays should be delivered to the hospital's main building(Primary Childrens).

With the help of my mentor I learned the skills needed to make the blankets. I learned the

cutting it was harder then cutting it to the size it was supposed to be. I learned you half to add a

thing called seam allowance. It is extra fabric that is subtracted from the total size when sewing.

I learned how to press the seam allowance before sewing. I learned from practice that cutting and

sewing in a straight line is actually kinda difficult. I learned you had to cut the fabric in a certain

way so it does not warp the fabric. Like all materials it has a grain but unlike most other

materials its grain can shift and can have multiple grains.

I also researched when and where to by fabric by looking for where I could get the fabric

and could get it on sale. Finding the fabric was easy and finding it on sale was just a matter of

checking on it multiple times until I found it on sale
