Language Autobiography

Name: Viviana Villalobos Date: Oct. 07. 2016

My name is Viviana Villalobos. Im 17 years old and Im from Michoacan, Mexico. In

my culture the language we practice is Spanish. Therefore, my primary language is Spanish. I

grew up speaking Spanish because of my mother; she influenced me to speak it because I had no

way of communicating with her. I had difficulties reading and writing the Spanish language. An

example of a time when I had difficulty writing the language was when we had to put the accent

marks on some of the words. Also, I had a very hard time remembering to put down the question

mark upside down at the beginning of a question. Finally, I mainly had plenty of difficulties

putting gender on the nouns in the Spanish language.

First of all, a way that my language has deepened the knowledge of my target culture is in

the way I have the opportunity to celebrate different holidays. Furthermore, the language has

opened doors for me in the way I am communicating in the Spanish language and it provides a

better opportunity when applying for jobs. In addition, knowing two languages has helped me get

further in life because I can communicate in both languages. I have improved my language by

going to school and taking Spanish classes and by communicating with my family members

especially with my mother.

Secondly, a classroom language learning perspective I had during my young age is when

I attended school in Mexico; it helped me acknowledge my language more, Additionally, in my

high school years, I have been taking Spanish classes since my junior year; Im currently a senior

and Im taking AP Spanish language.

However, some of the differences and similarities I have noticed in my target language

and my second language is that in the Spanish language you need to have a lot of accents and in

English you dont need anything that has to do with that. Another thing is that in Spanish the I

sounds like the e in English which is a big difference in both languages.

Furthermore, both languages have helped me in a remarkable way. Not only Im able to

understand both languages but I am also proficient at writing them. In other words, it has

enhanced my life by being able to talk to both the Spanish and English speakers and enjoy both

spectacular cultures.

Lastly, I am now in the US, which is a country that has Latinos currently coming and

applying for jobs. It gives me an opportunity to help the communities with translation. For

instance, if my mother needs help with translating something, Im able to help. Lastly, knowing

and understanding both languages can help me communicate better and have a successful future.

In conclusion, in the future I would want to attend a beauty school. A reason I want to

attend beauty school is to become a cosmetologist. By knowing both languages, it will be easier

for me to communicate with people as Im doing my job.
