OUR MARCH MEETING
We talked about all the things that we are involved with in
Barwon Heads, the issues that mater to our community.
How do we make sure our elected representatives and
public service officers take notice and care for our
community as we do? We are a community based group
with limited resources but lots of enthusiasm and access
to some great skills and experience. Our challenge is to
ensure the lazy option of one size fits all philosophy of
governments is seriously questioned and not applied to
our unique location at the mouth of the Barwon River on
the Bellarine. The township and surrounds need to be
respected and protected for future generations it not
should be absorbed as another suburb of Geelong, or
considered part of the metropolitan sprawl. We are a
coastal village with a river and the ocean, not a
metropolitan suburb with a railway station. Our open
space and trees and native vegetation is unique and can
be enjoyed by all. We want to be remembered for our
beautiful setting not our bad traffic. We want to hear
birds, and the sound of the waves not trucks and sirens.
OH WELL ELECTIONS IN OCTOBER 2017.
We will be part of a Bellarine Ward, with 3 Councilors
representing us. There will be a total of 11. Thankfully we
wont be diverted by the individual race for Mayor, the
recommendation is for Councilors to elect the Mayor from
within. We are not sure that Geelong is ready for the return
of elected Councilors or that we are either. But we all need
to give it our all to ensure Barwon Heads is well represented
and connected. Participating in the Bellarine Community is
an exciting challenge for us. We encourage you to share
how you also participate in the Bellarine we will plan a
Bellarine meeting soon so we can meet and share.
BELLARINE SAFETY COMMITTEE.
Our participation in this group over the last 2 years has
helped us understand how the Bellarine communities work
and brings us together with our local member of Parliament
Lisa Neville the Minister for Police; Senior Victorian Police;
local Police and representatives from groups across the
Bellarine. Two websites are available to help residents
understand the risks and take action to protect their homes
and families.

Car number plates. Having the number plate attached with
tamper resistant screws is one way to frustrate a thief.
There is a 'safe plate initiative', in conjunction with VicPol
supports residents screw number plates to vehicles in a
more secure way. Please think safe. Lock your cars, don't
leave valuables in them. Don't put your handbag over the
back of your chair at cafes; walk with a friend.
9 BRIDGE ROAD DEVELOPMENT: was heard by the
Panel Chair, Ms Lucinda Peterson on the 3rd March 2017.
As our members are very aware we have put a lot of time
and energy into this process, as have many of our members
and local residents and businesses in Barwon Heads. We
initiated the heritage protection. Following significant
community disquiet about the proposed demolition and
redevelopment of the property at 9 Bridge Rd, the BHA
engaged RBA ARCHITECTS + CONSERVATION
CONSULTANTS to conduct an independent Heritage
Values Review of the property. The RBA report
established that the subject house is likely to have been
built c.1890 during the first major wave of development
in Barwon Heads and as such is amongst the earliest
surviving houses in the town. During the period 1888-
1892 the subject site was owned by prolific Geelong
based architect Albert J Derrick, and as such he may
have been responsible for the design. The clear
photographic evidence has confirmed the house's
earlier appearance. The report concluded that the
extant house and cypress tree at 9 Bridge Rd are of
local heritage significance for their historical and
aesthetic values and warrant the application of interim
heritage controls with the view to introducing an
individual heritage overlay in the future. The Council
subsequently engaged its own heritage consultant
Context Pty Ltd to conduct a peer review of the RBA
report. The peer review concluded that the RBA heritage
assessment established the threshold of 'Local
Significance' for the house and cypress tree at 9 Bridge
Road for their historic, architectural and aesthetic values.
The City of Greater Geelong has put a significant amount of
time and resources into supporting this heritage
amendment. The submission to the Panel presented by
Peter Smith, Coordinator Strategic Implementation on
behalf of the Council contains a wealth of information about
Barwon Heads, its planning schemes, and the value of our
heritage. We are confident that this valuable information will
inform future discussions on the Structure Plan and future

development plans.
We now have 4 heritage consultants confirming the
significance of the site, and the significance of other
heritage buildings in Barwon Heads. We heard from 2 of
them at the hearing Ms Louise Honman for the Council and
Dr Leo Martin for the Thomas family. The developers own
amenity. We will put further details on our website. Also look
expert acknowledged the significance of the site.
Unfortunately the developers were not represented at the
hearing and relied on a simple written submission. We look
forward to the decision.
THE NEW DRAIN INTO RIVER AT OZONE RD
We all noticed the planning advertisement on the river in
March. We understand that the proposed drain is more than
double the size of the old drain and will be responsible for a
significant increase of discharge of storm water into the
River just next to our wonderful river beach. We have asked
the Council for further information and in particular
clarification of the project and its potential risks. There are
limited details of what the permit is for on the application
forms on the CoGG website. We ask:
where is the detailed plan for monitoring the
consequences of putting this major storm water drain into
the Barwon River? How will this be implemented? How
transparent will the reporting be? Which entity should be
contacted if the public is aware of contamination in the
river?
which entity is responsible for monitoring the river water
quality now? When was the last test taken? How is this
managed?
what consideration has been given to the fact the site is
close to river beaches
has Commonwealth permission been granted
what consideration has been given to the fact this is in
an area which is of significant environmental significance
(ES02);what alternatives have been considered.
Further discussions with the Council are planned.
BARWON HEADS STRUCTURE PLAN the draft is now
due in April. Barwon Heads is not a growth location and is
sandwiched between two significant housing growth areas.
The changes to residential zones by the State Government
will influence the new Structure Plan. We note with some
talking heads page 3
irony that the purpose of increased density is to provide
diversity of housing and to provide housing close to
transport and facilities for older people and students. We
don't see the diversity of offerings in Barwon Heads, just an
increase in holiday lets. We see denser development on a
large scale as a threat to the sense of place and a significant
risk to the unique coastal environment.
CHANGES TO RESIDENTIAL ZONES The State
Government is about to change the residential zones.
Planning Scheme Amendment VC110 will replace the
existing residential zones with the reformed zones when it is
gazetted. It could be any day. We find this all very
depressing and look forward to continuing discussions with
the Geelong Council. It appears to be a continuation of the
theme of denser development without any regard to
existing infrastructure, neighbourhood character and

VEGETATION PROTECTION - BHA is becoming
increasingly concerned that current and potential
development in Barwon Heads is threatening the survival of
the remaining Coastal Moonah Woodland in Barwon
Heads. The BHA supports appropriate vegetation controls
and is discussing the matter with the City of Greater
Geelong, being the local planning authority. The Coastal
Moonah Woodland is listed as a threatened community and
of State significance under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee
Act 1988 (Vic) which provides protection on public land. It
has come to our attention that Coastal Moonah Woodland
may be under consideration for listing under the
Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act
1999 (Com.)
BHA MEETINGS - We are pleased that our local member
for Corangamite Sarah Henderson has agreed to attend our
April meeting. This date has been changed to 24th April to
avoid a clash with Easter the previous week and falls on
Anzac Day eve. This meeting will be held at the Barwon
Heads Bowling Club at 7:00pm.
Some of the issues the BHA would like Sarah to respond to
will include:

Energy policy.

MANY THANKS
On so many occasions recently I have realized how very
grateful we volunteers at the All Saint's Op Shop are for
the wonderful support the Barwon Heads community
gives us.
We receive so many items that are of excellent quality,
and I am especially pleased that the appeal I made for
lighter boxes/bags, has been "taken on board".
Of course, we still have electrical goods we can't sell
arriving, but not as often as in past years. Most people
have also become more aware that books we can sell
have to be in reasonable condition, and magazines only
dating back two years. Recently we did have a most
successful half-price Book Sale. It was so good to see
spaces on the shelves, even though by the following
days, we had received just as many again as we had
sold!

March was again a busy month for
Save Barwon Heads.
We continued to increase our membership and
have received overwhelming support from the
Barwon Heads community and the region along
with holiday makers and visitors.
Our little stall at the Festival of the Sea was well
received too!
Our membership team, led by Prue
McKechnie will be at Peppercorn this
month, a change of view whilst we await
the draft Barwon Heads Structure Plan.
The Plan is expected out later in April and will be
circulated by the City of Greater Geelong.
Save Barwon Heads Alliance (SBHA) will send a
summary email to our membership with the key
information included in the Plan. We are also
organising a community meeting following the
release of the draft Barwon Heads Structure Plan.
This will provide a more detailed explanation of the
content and the response being developed by
SBHA. As this Plan will be reviewed by a Victorian
Planning Panel Hearing later in the year, our early
work on the assessment of the Plan will be put to
good use and also be made available to our
membership to further inform individual responses
to the draft Plan.

Real freedom is not something to be
acquired, it is the outcome of
intelligence. You cannot go out and buy
freedom in the market. You cannot get it
by reading a book, or by listening to
someone talk.
Freedom comes with intelligence.
But what is intelligence?
Can there be intelligence when there is
fear, or when the mind is conditioned?
When your mind is prejudiced, or when
you think you are a marvelous human
being, or when you are very ambitious
and want to climb the ladder of success,
worldly or spiritual, can there be
intelligence? When you are concerned
about yourself, when you follow or
worship somebody, can there be
intelligence? Surely, intelligence comes
when you understand and break away
from all this stupidity. So you have to
set about it; and the first thing is to be
aware that your mind is not free. You
have to observe how your mind is bound
by all these things, and then there is the
beginning of intelligence, which brings
freedom. You have to find the answer
for yourself. What is the use of someone
else being free when you are not, or of
someone else having food when you are
hungry?
To be creative, which is to have real
initiative, there must be freedom; and
for freedom there must be intelligence.
So you have to inquire and find out what
is preventing intelligence. You have to
investigate life, you have to question
social values, everything, and not accept
anything because you are frightened.

Barwon Heads Bowling Club

Pennant finals have been run and won, with nothing coming to Barwon Heads.
As we head into April all Club Championships have been completed. To update what had already happened the Mens Pairs was won by the bandits with the mechanical arms:
Russell Laird and Dave Greenfield, they narrowly defeated Ken Allen and Les Jennings. Russ and Dave had been runners up the last two years, so were due.
Russell backed up with partner Joyce Kirby to win the mixed pairs over Ken Allen and Anne Way
Last month we mentioned the annual trip, this year to Warrnambool. It was incorrectly advertised as a 4 day trip, no its a 5

Saturday 18th March, Barwon

Heads Bowling Club had the
privilege of hosting a very unique
day of bowls.
On a perfect day weather wise, Friends and Family of
the late Mitch Trickey came together to play bowls
and celebrate his birthday, almost two years after his
passing.
The popular local boy was both a husband and father
of two when he passed away at age 30 after a 12 year
battle with illness.

Well done to all those who attended, when the news

of the world isnt always good, this was very good.

 Connecting with your Kids
As parents, we naturally want the best for our children. We want them to have happy, safe and rewarding lives filled with possibilities.
However, these days the statistics regarding adolescents are alarming; increased rates of anxiety, stress and depression. More than
ever, we need to be connected as a family so if your child needs someone to talk to during tough times, they
can chat whenever they feel the need.

Being connected as a family is one of the most special things that can be experienced in life. I've started a project called Connecting
with your Kids and it's all about spending time together and teaching your children those vital life skills that many employers are
looking for. These 'soft skills' are what children need to thrive in jobs they take on that may not have even been created yet. This
month we are looking at respecting differences.

We all know that Barwon Heads is beautiful seaside village that we all love living in. Many people have made the 'sea change' and
moved to our town from Melbourne in search of a different life to the ones they previously had in the city. It is a fairly mono-cultural
town that you would expect to see on a postcard. On our first trip to Central Australia when the kids were young, we were wandering
around Alice Springs when our very young son Finn saw an Indigenous Australian and asked, Where is he from?

Here are some fun things to try at home together as a family

Listen to music from a different culture. What was different compared to the music that you usually listen to?
Go to a religious event or ceremony and discuss what you noticed.
Find 3 facts about the indigenous people of your area and talk about what you
discovered.
As a family, cook some food from a different culture that you haven't cooked
before.
How are you different to others in your family? At school? Work? In your sports
team? Discuss.
Go out to dinner to a restaurant from a culture that you have not experienced
before.
Watch a foreign film or television show together.

watch the comings and goings of the
resident Red Wattlebirds, the second
largest, and arguably the noisiest of all
honeyeaters, commonly known as gilly
warblers, barkingbirds, what's o clocks
and chocks.
They act as the real owners of our garden and
defend their territory, nest and nectar, with loud and
aggressive behaviour. 'Chokk Chokk, Tabocco

Early this summer, as I poked around the garden, a
Spotted Dove, a mere fledgling from its
Honeysuckle home, joined me off and on
throughout the morning. Though jaunty and

little wild bird follow me around. And yes, my first
thought when I discovered the carcass the
following day was to blame it on the Reds. I had
absolutely no evidence for this. More recently these

So, on average I spend 135
minutes a day making food
that I dont get to eat.
Its not because Im on some fad fasting diet.
Or because Im moaning about that first
world problem of not having the time to eat
whats on my plate. Its because the 135
minutes are spent filling a plate that isnt
even my own. Im like a mother bird who
every time she comes back to her nest, finds
3 helpless beaks opening and closing there.
Squawking pretty loud. Demanding to be
filled. And even though I feel like a mother
bird, I dont have any feathered wings.
Meaning I cant fly away from the demands
of my 3 small ones.
Despite our societies obsession with
measuring anything that moves, theres no
fit-bit that will count how many weet-bix you
microwave in a day. Theres no microsoft
spreadsheet that shows you the volume of
crusts you scrape into the compost against
how many plates you stack in the
dishwasher. Theres no pie graph to
measure the quantities of different crumbs

Theres just the thankless task of doing it. So
you remind yourself that its a gift of gratitude
to be able to serve. You know that pretty
soon, your small beaked ones will be big
walking ones.
Meaning not too long after that - theyre
gone.
Yesterday was a day that I could sense
would have to come. There was always
going to be an opening and closing beak that
would demand too much and that I would
eventually want to slap. Yesterday, after kid
wrangling meant Id had less than 3 hours
sleep and already punching out double that
number in hot cross buns, one of my
delightful small ones asked:
Can you make me a glass of water?
I stopped. Dead pan still. It was the 20th
minute of my 135 thankless moments of the
day. It made me turn on my foot to look at all
my 3 small hot cross-bun eating babies,
square in their beaky faces.
I asked them how I should make this glass
of water that had been called for. Should I go
out the back and turn the glass blower on?
Fire up a kiln to fire up a goblet? Take a
bucket downstream and walk back with it
balanced on my head? Or should I simply
slide open the drawer in front of their lazy-
bone legs, flick the kitchen tap to cold, and
proceed to watch Barwon Waters finest
cascade triumphantly into the glass I hold
underneath the tap? And surely one who can
walk on their hands, or sing all the words to
Moana or build the Millennium Falcon in
Lego can do this amazing feat of hand-eye
co-ordination and motor control?

The saying goes, you made your bed, now
sleep in it. Which is all well and good if
youre just sleeping with your donna

turn around and realise that all the time
youve spent trying to save time has actually
stolen 135 minutes out of every day from you
- you can see why your small people struggle
with the ability to turn a tap on. Ive met the
demands of the opening and closing beaks
by simply filling them up rather than showing
them how. Because its easier. And its faster.
And they say small people role model
behaviour, so I somehow thought they would
get the hang of this drink thing soon.
We have shifted into the darker months of
the year. From now until the end of June, the
nights are getting longer as the days become
milder. Our energy journey has begun its
soft descent into the shadows. Meaning that
we dont want to waste our time and efforts
on aspects of our process that drain from us.
Serving everything in solitude isnt being
gifted with gratitude. Its being a control-freak
perfectionist who hasnt made the time to
share the load. It comes form pushing
through lifes journey as if in perpetual crisis.
Its from forgetting to make time to be still. Its
because in between driving to circus
rehearsals, picking up piano books and
finding new footy boots - I somehow forgot to
catch my breath.
I somehow forgot to stop.
Which is odd - because thats what a fit-bit
can measure.
Last night, I saw 2 adult birds dancing
around the telephone wire out the front. They
dipped and turned, as if waltzing with one
another. It seemed a choreographed
celebration. Their small ones safely fledged
meaning they were free to fly north again. I
smiled as they painted the twilight sky with
shadows. Their flirting circles making me
want to twirl my own. And then I walked back
inside to my own growing fledglings.

What type of toothbrush shall I use?

Brushing- Type of toothbrush-
I recommend a soft toothbrush as plaque only has a ' double cream' type consistency. Therefore, a soft
toothbrush can easily remove the build up. Using a soft brush also means you can get right up to the gum margin
without causing gum tenderness.
Using a harder toothbrush and putting too much pressure onto the gums can also lead to tooth wear over time. I
see many patients with tooth wear and recession in the roots of their teeth from brushing overly hard.

Electric toothbrushes- Electric toothbrushes are excellent for good cleaning. You can get the same result
with a manual toothbrush if you are thorough with your cleaning but an electric toothbrush does the work for you.
I would choose a rechargeable toothbrush over a battery powered one. There are two types of cleaning
movement's available these are oscillating and vibrating (or sonic), a study has shown them to be very close in
efficiency, so it is a personal preference. I would also make sure it has a timer included. If you brush too hard,
then find one that has a pressure sensor included.

Brushing technique- Firstly, tilt your brush at a 45-degree angle and aim the bristles at the gum margin.
Use small circulation motions to brush up and down the tooth. Do the outside surface of all your teeth and then
the inside surface of all your teeth. Then move to the biting surfaces of your teeth, place the bristles on top of the
teeth and gently brush back and forth. You should brush for a full 2 minutes.

Barwon Coast is a Committee of

management of 13km of coastal crown
land from 7W Collendina to 42W Blue
Rocks, Barwon Heads covering our
beautiful beaches in Ocean Grove,
Barwon Heads and 13thBeach.
Our Committee members are local residents appointed
with consideration of the skills and experience that they
have to offer in the management of this important piece
of coastline.
FESTIVAL OF THE SEA
This year's Festival of the Sea has been and gone. The
week of events engaged students from Barwon Heads
Primary School who attended a variety of activities from
rockpool rambles, science night and citizen science
buddies. In addition to this the volunteers organised a
surf film night, arts connections workshops, Seachange
Quilters exhibition, Latte and limpets, Arts Trail walk, and
pot luck dinner. The main event on the Sunday was well
attended and provided for all interests from
environmental stalls, craft stalls, cultural stalls, and
amazing arts displays from members of the public and
the Barwon Heads Primary School. There was plenty of
food and entertainment and the weather was superb for
the full week of activities. Barwon Coast would like to
acknowledge the festival organisers and volunteers for
contributing their time into an outstanding array of
activities that engaged participants to learn about our
amazing landscape.
BARWON BLUFF MARINE SANCTUARY
The Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary is a pristine and
significant place. Both the land based and marine
ecosystems provide valuable habitat for our native
plants and animals. Exploring the natural values of the
Bluff is encouraged and is one reason why it exists. This
area is for research, education and passive recreation. It
is a 'no take' zone, which means fishing is prohibited, and
all plants, animals, rocks and other biological items must
remain. Dogs are also prohibited the entire length of the
marine sanctuary.

OCEAN GROVE SURF BEACH COMPLEX
In November last year, Barwon Coast and the
Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), after a
lengthy multi staged tender process, appointed
architects Wood Marsh to develop the plans for the
new Surf Beach Complex that will house the Dunes
Caf and the SLSC.
Wood Marsh through a series of design workshops
have progressed their work to the point that the
schematic design is largely agreed. That design has
been reviewed by the Office of Victorian
Government Architect and very positive feedback
provided to the Project Control Group.
The next steps include lodging a planning permit
application with the City of Greater Geelong;
releasing the plans for public comment and
beginning the detailed design development.
As this important community building progresses
we will keep the community updated.

I are embarking on a hiking
trip around the Three Capes
in Tasmania.
While not a super-rugged trip, it does
require that we carry all our food for 4
days. So lightweight victuals is the idea.
While one can buy very flash dehydrated
meals at camping shops, we are rising to
the challenge of preparing our own. So
presently our house is perfumed by the

Why bother, you say?
Well, we like a challenge, and we have an
abundance of produce from our garden
(and the Community Garden). What
could be tastier and more satisfying than
to prepare it yourself?
We have borrowed our son Tom's drier.
We have found an abundance of
information and recipes on the Internet.
Basically, the food is sliced reasonably
thinly, or diced, and spread on the trays.
Gentle heat and a fan do the job, with
drying times varying from a few hours to
a day or so.
Fruits such as apples, pears, apricots
and peaches work a treat. Many vegies
such as carrots, beans, tomatoes and
pumpkin are easily done. The finished
product goes in ziplock bags, and keeps
for many months.
For the main course, family favourites like
spaghetti bolognese and chili con carne
dry nicely, if a bit slowly. They are bulked
out with the appropriate pasta, rice or
cous cous.
Dried fruits will make a healthy, delicious
dessert.
While food drying is particularly useful for
hiking trips, it is also a great way to
preserve the excess produce from your
garden.
This way you can enjoy home-grown
goodies at any time during the year!

My favourite autumn vegetable is FENNEL
& heres a soup from autumn Gourmet Traveller

1 onion, finely chopped; 40 gm piece of prosciutto (an end piece

from the deli is fine) 12 garlic cloves, peeled; 120 ml olive oil;
1.5 litres (6 cups) chicken stock; 6 fennel bulbs (1.5kg), diced;
and 1 cup fronds finely chopped to serve; 300 gm sour cream;
finely grated horseradish, to serve; for toasted fennel seed oil,
120 ml grapeseed oil or light olive oil 1 tbsp fennel seeds,
crushed (between coarse and fine);
Method:
for toasted fennel seed oil, gently heat oil and fennel seeds in a
small saucepan over low-medium heat until seeds become
fragrant and oil is only just too hot to touch...set aside to cool
and infuse (1-2 hours).
Meanwhile, saut onion, prosciutto and garlic in olive oil in a
saucepan over medium heat until onion starts to turn light
golden (about 15mins)...add stock and fennel and simmer
uncovered until fennel is very tender (30-35 minutes)... discard
prosciutto and pure soup with a stick blender (or in a blender
in batches, cooling the soup first)...season to taste...just before
serving, bring soup back to the boil, then stir in sour cream and
fennel fronds...check seasoning again...to serve, ladle hot soup
into bowls, drizzle with toasted fennel seed oil, and scatter with Opening hours are

Christine Middleton and Matiss Schubert are both acclaimed

travels every year to India and China).
Their program was beautifully varied in composition and style. They began
with Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856 in Hungary) a virtuoso performer on
both guitar & flute & moved to Vienna in 1840. He toured widely & was
recognised as a musician of rare quality which was beautifully illustrated in
his guitar duets. They performed three contrasting pieces; lovely&
sensitive, a very lively piece & a romantic serenade. Three Argentinian
Tangos followed which were very exciting with their fascinating rhythms.
Johannes then followed with five short picture pieces of flowers which were
movingly beautiful, such as Moon & flower reflected in water& Flower
petals perpetually moving in the breeze. Two more pieces by Mertz were
the atmospheric boat trip, Water journey on Lake Traunsee & a lively

The 4th AGM of the Barwon Heads Arts Council was held on Tuesday 14th
March to celebrate the events and activities that took place in 2016.
Highlights over the past year included the Bellarine Arts Trail, Arts Walk and
the performance of Carmen.
Work continued during the year on the Feasibility Study for the Community Hub. Community consultation took place with an on-line survey collecting 344
responses. Stage 1 confirmed sufficient need for a Community Hub in Barwon Heads. Discussions are now underway with a number of community groups to look
at ways to partner and develop the Hub. If you are a community group that is interested in having a home and partnering with us, please call Vicki Strachan on

The new committee is as follows: Victoria Strachan President, Karen Shirley Vice President, Jan O'Sullivan Secretary,
Caroline Woods Treasurer; General Committee, Dorothy Johnston, Sophia Legoe, Karen McGlynn, Suzanne Brown and
Adie McDermott.
The Barwon Heads Arts Council will be hosting a series of 'Meet the Artist' events over the next few months at Affetati & Co, Italian Delicatessan, 2/62 The Terrace,
Ocean Grove.

The first will be on Saturday 29 April, followed by Saturday 27 May and Saturday 24 June. Artists taking part will be announced closer to the date.

The Bellarine Arts Trail is on again on the Melbourne Cup long weekend 4-6 November in Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, PT Lonsdale and Queenscliff. We are
welcoming artists from other Bellarine towns to participate by joining together in group venues in any of the four participating towns. More information can be

Also for your diary: the Arts Council will be hosting a 'Meet the Authors' day on Sunday September 10. Previous Meet the Authors days have been a resounding

In the year 2000, Robert received national and international awards for his work titled 'Cry of the Wilderness' in the Winsor & Newton Worldwide Millennium
Painting Competition, which attracted over 22500 entries from 51 countries and was presented in London by Prince Charles.
Robert sees the landscape in terms of line, form, colour and space. His abstract landscapes are a statement of the beauty and harshness yet fragility, of this
untamed land. His work explores the essence of the surface, framework and underlay of landscape rather than dealing with specifics. For the viewer this
will mean many more metaphoric possibilities to consider.
Robert considers his works to be earthy and primal with a strong environmental statement.

BARWON HEADS URBAN FIRE BRIGADE

With the change of clocks back from daylight savings we are suddenly in the throes of
autumn and the end of the fire danger period.
Traditionally the season is declared over by Easter and this year is likely to be no exception.
And with Easter falling in April this year we expect many of you will be planning DIY around the house and preparing your
Properties for winter. Remember to cut back trees, prune bushes and clear gutters. In addition, clean out chimneys and of course don't forget
to change your smoke alarm battery.
Smoke alarms are one of the most important life safety measures to have in your home. As well as checking the battery is current every six
months, it's recommended you replace your smoke alarms every ten years. Hard wired smoke alarms must be replaced professionally, so
best call an electrician.
Waiting until the smoke alarm beeps before you change the battery is too late - this indicates that the battery is already flat, and
your family is not protected. Change your clock, change your smoke alarm battery.

The Barwon Heads Fire Brigade relies on community support to buy the extra equipment we use at incidents that is not supplied by CFA.
We have purchased free standing lights, additional portable radios and a defibrillator in the past few years thanks to the kind donations from
local businesses and community groups. We are therefore very grateful to the IGA and Barwon Heads community for the generous $1500
donation presented recently to Captain Helen Wood by David Lester, Produce Manager for IGA Barwon Heads. The money was raised in
store from the Community Chest program.

THE LOBSTER POT?

The Lobster Pot hosted a large party recently.
The huge guest list of over 1200 comprised
mainly families and lots of children. The
occasion, which coincided with the Festival of
the Sea, was to welcome new residents to the
saltwater fish tanks. The new arrivals came as
stowaways in fresh seaweed added to the tanks
but were welcome anyway. There were half a
dozen sullen ghost shrimp, a cute little toadfish
and possibly others unknown as I write this.
They provided a real-life demonstration of the
lifecycle of our marine creatures.
Entertainment for the party guests was provided
by other fish tank residents including the 6 piece
mullet band the show off crab.
Other guests were absorbed by the library of
photographs of events from Barwon Head's
earlier years. Party guests were not offered
refreshments because food and drink is not
allowed in the Lobster Pot. Despite that
everyone had a good time.
You should try to make it onto the guest list for
future functions. They usually take place during
opening hours which are 1.00-4.00p.m. daily
between Boxing Day and Australia weekend.
With the holidays now behind us the Lobster Pot
is open 1.00-4.00p.m. weekends only at the
moment. Regular party-goers will know I'm
talking about the Barwon Estuary Heritage
Centre which is the green building on the
riverfront near 'At the Heads' restaurant. Even if
you don't receive a personal invitation come in
and see what almost turned the Lobster Pot into
a sardine tin.
If you enjoy hosting large gatherings and have
spare time you may wish to join the friends of the
Lobster Pot.

BARWON HEADS CRICKET CLUB
You have read a few times here that
the BHCC is almost a junior club
with a senior section and the
premiership wall in the club reflects
this.
In 2016-17 we have another photo to add to the
collection with Under 13 Hyland taking out the Norquay
section of GJCA in a wonderful match against Drysdale,
where the result wasnt achieved until the last over of the
game with only one wicket in hand. Superb
performances from Jack Goddard, who came in and hit
a quick 18 on Sunday, Charlie Farrer who batted for the
entire innings on Sunday to steady the ship, Luca Vella
who scored 25 on Saturday to set up the run chase on
Sunday and Campbell Snookes who scored 40 not out
and hit the winning runs. Coach Sean OLeary was very
proud of his team and they and their opponents played
the match in great spirit.
The Drysdale boys and girls were well led by skipper
Jed Modini and had great bowling all day especially
from Caleb Belcher who took 3 wickets for 3 runs from 6
overs, to almost snatch a win for coach Jason Mallett.
The Barwon Heads Cricket Club congratulates all of the
young Seagulls from the Hyland team on their
achievement.
I was hoping this week to be able to tell you that the
BHCCs A Grade had achieved something that we
hadnt seen for three years, but unfortunately, they
achieved a feat not seen at the club for a lot longer than
that. Its been more like 10 years since the club has
finished second in the BPCA, but we managed to
achieve that result in 2016-17.
If you had suggested at Christmas time that the team
would get on a roll after the break and earn a place in the
grand final then you would have been committed to a nut

BARWON HEADS CYCLING CLUB
This month I was a little short on news.
There are no major events happening. Not even a social
barbeque. Just a quiet gathering at the Tin Shed one
night. But I don't want to comment on that evening. More
to come in a later edition. So, I threw it out to the BHCC
crew for a comment or a few words, and here are some
words from Jeff and Karen
Noise in Breamlea by Karen
The BHCC is a bike riding club and it's also part of the
fabric of the community we live and ride in - a community
we love and respect. So, it was really good to get some
direct feedback early one morning down at Breamlea
from a (possibly?) long suffering resident. Perhaps this
resident had been wakened, morning after morning, by
the friendly banter and chat amongst the riders as we
cruised into Breamers, the noise of voices and
freewheeling hubs plucking him, too early, from his
sleep. Perhaps he'd lain there wondering how on earth
this situation might ever change, would there never be a
day of peace, of a sleep brought to an end at a chosen
time, rather than at the time chosen by a bunch of loud
Lycra-lovers? One morning it got too much for this
resident and matters were drawn brusquely to a head.
Feedback was given in clear and certain terms and no
doubt was left in our minds. It hit the spot! We are now
aware of the impact we may be having on our
community at a tender time of the morning. We've
'shushed' ourselves at Breamers and at Carr Street.
Thanks, Mr Resident, for the feedback and our
apologies for not cottoning on sooner.
Rules and Etiquette by Jeff
Rules. Etiquette. These are important guiding principles
in any sport, especially in cyclingsuch as don't let Nev
always shout coffee, or don't refer to people by their old
house. In the last game before the break we lost to
undefeated Collendina by 9 wickets defending 192, been
bowled out by Jan Juc for 89 two games prior to that and
had beaten only one other team for the season. Morale
was reasonable, but form and getting a settled team on
the park were proving elusive and things were looking
grim.
Sometimes a break is just what you need to get things
into focus and change the trajectory of your season and
coach Ash Muir, skipper Sam Schaller and the lads in
the team got their, you know what, together and started
winning come cricket matches. With the last round of the
season being a bye for the team, a win against Drysdale
in round 10 was a must if we were going to see finals.
Scoring 310 with the bat and bowling Drysdale out for
130 saw the team get a good percentage as well as a
needed win and secure 3rd place.
In week one of the finals we played in form Jan Juc and
after a good start we slumped from 2-100 and were in
trouble at 8-127 and things were again looking grim, but
a late fightback from Pat Lowery (22) and Alan Jack
Daniel (39) saw the score pushed to 192 before a
wonderful performance on the Sunday saw Jan Juc
squeezed to be all out for 132 and The Heads had won
their way into another Grand Final.
Its an unwritten law, but a well known adage that batting
first in Grand Finals is a great advantage as you have any
runs you make in the bank and can throw all of the
pressure and expectation onto your opponent to chase
you down. Collendina won the toss and duly batted and
again Barwon Heads was able to put on the squeeze,
field and catch sensationally and bowl them out for 100.
At the end of day one we were looking pretty comfortable
at 1-18 with plenty of batting to follow and two good
players at the crease. These low scores can be difficult to
chase down, though they should not be, but cricket is a
nicknames, or don't drop your pants during a time trial.
The problem is not all industries are so well managed in
this respect. Take for example the newsagency industry.
Huh! I hear you say. What drugs is Jeff on now? I also
hear you sayWell, it's the most common drug in every
office space people. NESCAFE Blend 43. And once I tell
you about this cruel and beguiling practise you will be
nodding you head, just like Andy's Elvis doll on his new
Honda Civic dashboard.
Picture this, you've (well obviously not me) just come
back from a tiring 2 hour ride around the Bellarine on
Saturday morning, had your coffee, but your fingers are
still in the holding the handle bar position, like you've
just played arcade Donkey Kong for the last 4 hours. You
settle down at the dining table, pick up the newspaper
looking forward to reading the Traveller section where
you can see all the places that Wayne has told you
about. Then you realise you have to unwrap this god
forsaken beast (yes, the nods have started). WTF
what sort of sick b%$#tard wraps a newspaper up like
this and where the hell is the edge. You turn it over
twenty times to try and sneak a look at the fine plastic
seam. You try and use the force of a Jedi by hovering
your hand over the length to lift the edge up, but of
course that doesn't work because youre clearly not one
with the force the force is not with you. You then try and
reverse engineer the edge by starting at the top (or
bottom, whichever way your inclined) and separate the
fused layers in a clockwise, no make that anti-clockwise,
bugger nope sorry make that clock wise direction. Then
you realise that someone else in the family has already
reached your frustration level and has tried this
approach, and they've left a slimy peanut buttery residue
which is making your attempt more feeble than Jason's
talking heads page 25
funny game and pressure does funny things to
batsmen, bowlers and umpires.
Most especially in finals. At tea the lads were in a good
position, though not safe, with 5 wickets in hand and
only 17 runs needed to add to the silverware collection.
You dont get to be undefeated for the season unless
you have a certain Joie de vivre and can deal with
pressure in big games.
Collendina had a mixture of great play, great luck and
excellent leadership in a 25-minute period after tea that
will long live in their clubs history and make this possibly
their finest day. They showed why they were the best
team all year and made some great saves in the field,
caught well, bowled impeccable line and length and an
old stalwart pulled out his best effort to get them home.
In the end, they bowled us out for 91 and claimed the
flag. It was a great game and both clubs can be proud of
the way that they approached the pressure situation of a
big final and the spirit of competition, played as hard as it
gets, was pleasing to see. Im sure that their club is
proud of their performance and I know that we are very
proud of our team for getting so far and, notwithstanding
the result, taking us all on a pretty exciting ride through
March.
So another seasons comes to a sweet and sour end and
the club will go into a playing recess for a few months till
the weather gets warm again. We will of course be
working hard in the off season to secure new players,
new and existing sponsors and get things in place to put
the best possible cricket on the park in 2017-18.
We thank all of the supporters, players, members,
patrons and sponsors for your help and support over the
season. I look forward to seeing you all on the hill at the
footy in the winter.

Wednesday. Meanwhile your nice homemade Turkish
coffee is getting cold, your sweaty riding gear has cooled
and settled in every crack of your body and that nice
Saturday morning feeling you had an hour or so has long
gone.
Crying doesn't help. Swearing out loud, like you've just
run into the bollards at the end of your street, doesn't
help either. The only thing left is the scissors. So, you
take to that plastic wrapped beast, like Edward
Scissorhands and set about disemboweling that printed
flower. Now there's KAOS with plastic and paper flying
everywhere, and soon the Saturday Age resembles 3rd
Prize in the Barwon Heads Origami Easter competition
and all you can see is the Good Weekend pull out with all
the circles in the o's and d's cut out, so it sort of looks 3-D
ish. So you tell me. If these manic early rising
newsagency people, had to follow the same rules and
etiquette that we do in the BHCC, then our Saturday
mornings (and don't get me started on bloody Sunday's
paper) would be far more enjoyable. Although I'm still
opposed to the drop the dacks rule that Andy has
imposed
Luckily, Talking Heads doesn't come plastic wrapped.
However, if Jeff's language doesn't improve, it may need
to come in a plastic bag like the magazines on the top
shelf at Apco that he was telling me about.

Summer season has just completed with two of the
three teams making finals.
Section 4 finished seventh hampered by injuries in
the men.
Section 12 fought hard in the preliminary final to
only lose by one game to Wandana Heights.
Section 3 made it to the Grand Final but the
dominant force of Geelong Lawn were just too

SATURDAY JUNIORS
The summer season has
come to an end for our junior
tennis teams and 4 out of our
10 teams made finals, but
unfortunately the 2 teams
that made it through to their respective preliminary
finals both got beaten so this year we have no
teams playing off for premierships. Winter season
starts April 29th and it looks like we'll have 3 to 4
teams playing the winter season.
Over summer we had good numbers of new kids
playing and also a good proportion of our teams
were girls and hopefully we'll attract new kids again
next summer and have a similar or greater number
of teams. A big thank you to our coach, Cameron
and his staff, for getting the juniors up to a
standard to play competition and we encourage all
kids to keep up their lessons whether it be half the
year, or over a 12 month period. Also a big thank
you to all parents that have assisted and
especially all our team managers.
MIDWEEK LADIES
Midweek ladies' tennis is half way through the
summer season and 4 of our 6 teams are in the
four! We are looking good to win a few
premierships at the end of this season! There
have been a few injuries amongst our players, so
thankyou to all the fill-ins!
Our courts are being resurfaced next week, so a
big thank you to Ocean Grove Tennis Club and 13th
Beach Golf Club for letting us use their courts
while this is being done.
In the near future our club is planning some
fundraising to upgrade our clubrooms. Any ideas
support or assistance would be greatly
appreciated. School holidays are upon us, so
stay fit, travel safe and get down to the newly
resurfaced courts for a hit.

Barwon Heads Seagulls have had another terrific summer season. The committee are busy preparing for the winter
season coming up with registrations open for new players and returning players.
Tryouts for the under 12s and 14s were held on 21st March for the new Seagulls Geelong Rep Teams. It's exciting
for the club to have the opportunity to play in the Geelong Basketball League for the upcoming winter season. We
would like to acknowledge Ray Smith who ran the tryouts and thank him for all his assistance to get this up and
running for us. The kids were very responsive and his professionalism certainly sent a buzz throughout the stadium.

I have spent the past four years on the Barwon Heads Community Bank board.
Now, this is by no means a long stint. There have been others who have served
five or six years, including time spent on the fundraising and bank launch
committees.
The Barwon Heads Community Bank has been in operation for nearly five years,
and by virtue of its structure, it needs a board of management to govern
performance and compliance on behalf of shareholders.
Why do we need these people? That's a great question. Fundamentally they
ensure this locally-run business stays on track to deliver the two things the Community Bank Board Meeting
shareholders were looking for when they signed up. The first is a local business that provides, at very competitive
rates, all the services and products the big four banks offer, and then gives back to the local community via grants and
sponsorship. The second, is what every shareholder wants, a reasonable return on their investment.
What do these directors do? Well the board is split into executive roles and non-executive roles. You have a chairman
(me) who leads the board, a deputy chair, a treasurer (also me at one point) who reports on financial performance and
risk adherence, a board secretary who supports the board and a public officer who deals with the public side of things
such as trading shares. This team meets on the second Tuesday of each month and goes through all current and
future activities associated with running the bank. They then present their findings or recommendations to the board K2 ROOF PLUMBING

What does the rest of the board do? They assemble themselves into two teams. One is the Business Development
Committee which works with the branch manager to collaborate with the local community on the best ways to grow the Kerry: 0402 071 093

year for local groups to take advantage of as long as they meet the right requirements. These two groups each meet
once a month, consider their respective issues and then offer recommendations to the greater board team.
Why would you do this? Surely youre too busy with your own work or family!
It is a great opportunity to get involved with your local community and really make a difference. It allows you to use
various work or home-related management skills to help make important, well-considered commercial decisions.
You get to meet and work with some really passionate people who care about our community and the shareholders
they represent. Realistically, but not necessarily more importantly, it also adds another level of responsibility and
experience to your resume.
Why am I telling you this? Just like every football team at this time of the year there are people leaving, and they need
to recruit. The board is the same - each year people retire after being on the board for a couple of years, having
